Commentary
Development summary
This is the eighth leisure schedule to be produced by the City of Edinburgh Council. It is one of seven which take an overview of commercial development in the city over the past year.
The schedule details significant (over 500 sq. m.) completions, properties under construction, planning consents, applications awaiting determination and closures.
‘Leisure’ is defined in this schedule as developments falling under Classes 10 and 11 of the Town & Country Planning (Use Classes) (Scotland) Order 1997. This includes, but is not limited to, galleries, museums, cinemas, casinos, concert halls and sporting facilities.
Graph 1 shows that there were 16,611 sqm of completions in 2015. There were 289,185 sqm under construction, 48,718 sqm of developments with planning consent and 8,500 sqm awaiting determination.
Nine of the eleven completions and developments under construction in 2015 were on brownfield sites, as are all existing consents.
Trends
‘Leisure’, unlike hotels, for example, is a disparate category, and it is therefore difficult to identify meaningful trends. However, it is possible to see in Graph 2 that consents rose by a factor of fifty,
due to the construction of the National Performance Centre for Sport at Heriot-Watt University.
In a change from 2014, the majority of completions, developments under construction and consents in 2015 were outwith the City Centre.
Significant developments
• Construction was completed on a new De Vere Urban Resort Village at Crewe Toll.
• Construction was completed on a multi-screen cinema complex at Fort Kinnaird.
• Construction is underway on the National Performance Centre for Sport at Heriot-Watt University.
