Compton
Construction and demolition debris is material generated during the
building, remodeling, or removal of buildings, roads, homes, tenant
improvements, and landscaping projects. The materials resulting from these
activities include, but are not limited to: concrete, asphalt, drywall, wood,
glass, metals, red clay brick, soils, tree trimmings and shrubs.
Fortunately, most material from construction and demolition activities can be
recycled into a number of useful products or reused. Concrete and asphalt
are crushed and used as aggregate base for new roads; scrap metal is
recycled into new metal products; yard waste and non-reusable wood can be
converted into soil amendments and boiler fuel to generate electricity; and
good quality red clay brick can be marketed for re-use.

RECYCLING GUIDE
In 2008 the Compton City Council passed an ordinance requiring that all construction projects participate in a construction & demolition waste recycling program. This ordinance requires that all building permit applicants use one of two methods to recycle construction debris:
Use the City’s authorized waste hauler, Republic Services, for construction & demolition waste removal and recycling. Republic Services will recycle the material and submit required recycling reports to the City. This option does not require the building permit applicant to post a deposit.
Self haul the construction & demolition material to recycling facilities and submit recycling reports detailing the recycling activity from the project. This option requires a $1,000 recycling deposit to ensure proper recycling.

Reduce: Proper materials management practices can result in substantial cost savings. Ensure that precise estimates are made prior to purchasing materials, and that accurate measurements are made prior to cutting materials so that excess scrap and waste can be avoided. Consider having materials pre-cut at lumberyards, using engineered wood products, steel framing or other pre-manufactured components to reduce waste at your job site.
Reuse: Donate salvageable materials to local charity organizations. Items available for donation can also be listed on the County’s materials exchange web site, LACoMAX, at www.lacomax.com,
Recycle: Use the Republic Services, and this guide for recycling construction and demolition debris from your jobs. Compare the costs of recycling with the costs of disposal. Even if you have to pay for recycling, you will still “make money” if you pay less than the cost for landfill disposal.
Please note: If you are a contractor, construction company, or a do-it-yourselfer, use this guide to begin minimizing and recycling your construction and demolition debris.
To use the City’s authorized waste and recycling company and avoid posting the $1,000 recycling deposit, please contact the City of Compton Waste Department at: (310) 605-5524.
If you choose to manage the recycling of the project yourself, please do the proper research. The tables on the following pages contain construction and demolition resources that may fit with your project. Please contact them for additional infor-mation concerning the reuse or recycling of construction and demolition debris.
