AUGUST 10, 2018 City Manager’s Update 6 Things About The Housing Resource Center You Probably Didn’t Know (Or Maybe You Did!) THERE ISN’T ANOTHER LIKE IT: The Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center is a one-stop shop that will provide essential services, community resources, shelter and housing for homeless families and individuals, making it the first of its kind in the region and incomparable to other facilities in the country. IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING: For more than 30 years, a community of City, faith and nonprofit organizations has been working together to address homelessness in Virginia Beach. This City-funded facility (construction and most operating costs) is a testament to that work: with the opening of the Housing Resource Center, Virginia Beach is poised to become a national leader in the effort to prevent and end homelessness. WHAT’S IN THE BUILDING: The new 62,000 square-foot, LEED-certified facility can provide shelter for 118 individuals: 10 motel-style units (40 beds) for families and 49 singles beds (20 male, 18 female, 4 LGBTQ, 7 ADA) for short-term, overnight shelter, and 29 one-bedroom efficiency apartments for permanent housing. The Center will also include Human Services offices, a health clinic, dining hall and a learning facility. AVAILABLE SERVICES: The Housing Resource Center will offer services to help people leave homelessness behind by providing participants the opportunity, from day one, to start on their housing and employment plans. Offered through a mix of City agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations and volunteers, services include housing-crisis management, charitable medical services, education and employment programs and job-skills training. Day services such as showers, laundry and housing support will also be available. THOUGHTFUL DETAILS: The layout and design of the interior spaces was an important aspect of the overall construction of the Center. From the bright color selections, furniture design and bedding material to the outlets by each shelter bed, distinctive courtyard spaces and use of natural light, the building is the result of careful consideration and planning to provide comfortable living spaces and highly functional service and administrative areas. LOCATION & INFORMATION: The Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center is located at the corner of N. Witchduck Road and Southern Boulevard (140 N. Witchduck Rd.). For more information on the Center, visit VBgov.com/housing-resource-center or contact Housing & Neighborhood Preservation at (757) 385-6349 or 385-5803. If you are homeless or at imminent risk of losing your housing, please call the Regional Housing Crisis Hotline at (757) 227-5932, Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to connect with the City of Virginia Beach homeless services system. City Manager’s Update

6 Things About The Housing Resource Center You Probably Didn’t Know (Or Maybe You Did!)

• THERE ISN’T ANOTHER LIKE IT: The Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center is a one-stop shop that will provide essential

services, community resources, shelter and housing for homeless families and individuals, making it the first of its kind in the region and incomparable to other facilities in the country.

• IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING: For more than 30 years, a community of City, faith and nonprofit organizations has been working together to address homelessness in Virginia Beach. This City-funded facility (construction and most operating costs) is a testament to that work: with the opening of the Housing Resource Center, Virginia Beach is poised to become a national leader in the effort to prevent and end homelessness.

• WHAT’S IN THE BUILDING: The new 62,000 square-foot, LEED-certified facility can provide

shelter for 118 individuals: 10 motel-style units (40 beds) for families and 49 singles beds (20 male, 18 female, 4 LGBTQ, 7 ADA) for short-term, overnight shelter, and 29 one-bedroom efficiency apartments for permanent housing. The Center will also include Human Services offices, a health clinic, dining hall and a learning facility.

• AVAILABLE SERVICES: The Housing Resource Center will offer services to help people leave

homelessness behind by providing participants the opportunity, from day one, to start on their housing and employment plans. Offered through a mix of City agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations and volunteers, services include housing-crisis management, charitable medical services, education and employment programs and job-skills training. Day services such as showers, laundry and housing support will also be available.

• THOUGHTFUL DETAILS: The layout and design of the interior spaces was an important aspect of

the overall construction of the Center. From the bright color selections, furniture design and bedding material to the outlets by each shelter bed, distinctive courtyard spaces and use of natural light, the building is the result of careful consideration and planning to provide comfortable living spaces and highly functional service and administrative areas.

• LOCATION & INFORMATION: The Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center is located at the

corner of N. Witchduck Road and Southern Boulevard (140 N. Witchduck Rd.). For more information on the Center, visit VBgov.com/housing-resource-center or contact Housing & Neighborhood Preservation at (757) 385-6349 or 385-5803.

VBSO CELEBRATES PROMOTIONS AND RETIREMENTS Sheriff Ken Stolle promoted eight individuals to the ranks of corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and chief deputy at a ceremony held on Thursday, Aug. 2. In addition, former Chief Deputy of Operations Brian Struzzieri’s promotion to undersheriff was marked at the ceremony. This makes him the first undersheriff, the office’s highest appointed rank, in Virginia Beach history to start as a deputy sheriff and work his way up the ranks. Undersheriff Struzzieri started at the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office in 1999. The department also celebrated the retirement of five members: two civilians, a deputy, a sergeant and former Undersheriff Bruce Benson, who served the City of Virginia Beach for more than 23 years. Collectively, the retirees accounted for nearly 71 years of service. Congratulations to the newly promoted and best wishes to our retirees.

MOBILE TICKETING NOW AVAILABLE ON VB WAVE TROLLEYS

Hampton Roads Transit is now offering trolley customers a new way to buy tickets using their smart phones, allowing them to skip lines or eliminate the need to search for a place to buy paper tickets. Mobile ticketing is now available for VB Wave customers through HRT’s GoHRT Mobile App. The GoHRT Mobile App pilot program is running only on the 14 trolleys operating under the VB Wave brand on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront routes 30 and 31. Customers can purchase One Way ($2.00), One Day ($4.50) and Three Day ($8.00) through the app. The pilot program does not offer discounted fares. Customers can continue to purchase and use paper tickets at any authorized outlet. For those customers who use paper tickets, the standard VB Wave fares are unchanged. A one-way adult fare on the VB Wave is $2. A discounted fare, applied to seniors over 65 and Medicare cardholders, is $1. Children 17 and under ride for free with a paying adult.

HRT eventually hopes to transition its entire fare collection systems to mobile ticketing to improve the experience and accessibility for riders. For more information on transit services, visit www.gohrt.com.

In addition

Survey teams will include at least one officer in uniform. All surveys will take place on Wednesdays beginning at 5:30 p.m. and conclude no later than 8:30 p.m. Survey schedule: Second Precinct occurred on Aug. 1. Third Precinct - Aug. 15. Fourth Precinct - Aug. 22. First Precinct - Aug. 29.

“READING BUDDIES” BUILDS SKILLS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS Virginia Beach Public Library hosted a four-week program in July that paired children in kindergarten through third grade with teen mentors at the Central and Oceanfront locations. The program was designed to provide young children with one-on-one reading encouragement and group activities to foster a love of reading and help them build confidence, while also offering teens meaningful volunteer and mentoring experience. By all accounts, both children and teens enjoyed the program, which included games, coloring, writing practice, and listening and connecting to stories read aloud. In total, 12 children and 12 teens participated.
