SOCIETIES AND COMPANIES.Plummet Hall.

This building is located at 134 Essex street. It was erec-ted in 1856, from funds left by the late Miss Caroline Plum-mer, to the proprietors of the Salem Athenaeum.

The first story is appropriated to a portion of the libraryand the historical collections of the Essex Institute, and hastwo ante-rooms, one of which contains the periodicals andpublications of societies received in exchange; the other,the manuscripts and historical collections. In the large hallin the rear has been arranged the newspapers, pamphlets,and books of reference of the Institute.

The second story has a. similar arrangement of rooms.The Western ante-room is appropriated to the use of the li-brarian, and some of the principal works of reference, andthe new books belonging to the Salem Athenaeum; the east-ern, to the libraries of the Essex South District Medical So-ciety and the Essex Agricultural Society. The alcoves onthe Western side of the large room in the rear contain the li-brary of the Salem Athenaeum; those on the eastern, thatof the Essex Institute. The libraries of the several socie-ties in the building contain about 43,000 bound volumes,besides a large collection of pamphlets.

Plummer Farm School of Reform for Boys.This school was founded by the munificent bequest of

Miss Caroline Plummer. It is a school for the instruction,employment, and reformation of juvenile offenders in thecity of Salem. The amount of the bequest was $25,000,present fund $50,000; and the school Went into operationSeptember 23, 1870.

A Board of ten Trustees Was chosen by the Mayor andAldermen of the city of Salem, in May, 1855, and incorpo-rated by an Act of the Legislature on the 21st of May,1855. The first meeting of the Board of Trustees Was heldNovember 26, 1855, at which time a. code of By-Laws Wasadopted, and officers were elected. The Board of Trusteesfor 1871 is as follows :—

EssexSouthern District Medical Society.Consists of all those members of the Massachusetts

Medical Society who reside in Lynn, Swampscott, N ahant,Saugus, Marblehead, Salem, Danvers, Middleton, Beverly,Wenham,Topsfie1d, Ipswich, Hamilton, Essex, Rockport,Gloucester, Manchester, and Peabody.

The Society was formed in 1805, in pursuance of a vote ofthe Massachusetts Medical Society, authorizing the establish-ment of district or subordinate associations. The Library isannually increased, and contains about 1,000 volumes; it isdeposited in Plummer Hall, where the regular quarterlymeetings of the society are held.

Essex Institute.Incorporated in 1848, was formed by the union of the

Essex Historical Society and the Essex County NaturalHistory Society.

The Library, which contains about 27,000 volumes, withthe historical collections, also portraits, including several ofthe former Presidents of the Historical Society, and some ofthe early settlers of New England, are deposited in PlummerHall. The scientific collections have been placed in thecustody of the Trustees of the Peabody Academy of Science,and have been arranged, with the Museum of the East IndiaMarine Society, in the East India Marine Hall.

The Institute publishes a Monthly Bulletin and 3,volumeof the historical collections annually.

Two exhibitions of Fruit and Flowers are held monthly,at their rooms in Plummer Hall, during the summer andautumn. Annual meeting on the second Wednesday in May.

Salem Lyceum.Was formed the 18th of January, 1830, and organized as

an Incorporated Association on the 2d of April, 1830. Theintroductory lecture was delivered in the Sewall-streetMeeting House, by Hon. D. A. White.

The purchase of an annual ticket makes a person a mem-ber of the corporation; and the price of a ticket has neverbeen more than ONE DOLLAR. Over six hundred lectureshave been delivered in the annual courses.

Its object has been the relief of the poor by furnishingMedicine and medical advice gratuitously.

In 1859, it was reconstructed on the plan of similar insti-tutions in larger cities,and a central office established at theTown Hall, Where the clerk is in attendance every day,Sundays excepted, from 3 to 5, p.m., to receive all applica-tions for the privileges a.ff'ordedby the institution. Anyperson approved by the Executive Committee, Who shallpay the sum of five dollars per annum, or fifty cents permonth, may be entitled to the benefit of the institution forhimself and family. Those who may be unable to pay thissmall assessment, will be provided for gratuitously. Theexpenses to be paid by an annual subscription.

The city is divided into two districts, the Eastern and theWestern, to each of which is assigned a physician and anapothecary. The Eastern district includes all persons whomay apply for relief living eastward of St. Peter and Centralstreets, a.nd.i11 South Salem. The Western district includesthose living Westward of the above streets, and in NorthSalem.

ESSEX AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.Incorporated June 12, 1818. Exhibitions held annually

in the month of September.This Society was the first in the State to publish in detail

its transactions, which have now extended to six largeoctavo volumes, containing much valuable information tothe agriculturist.

A Library was commenced in the autumn of 1849, whichnow numbers about one thousand Volumes, deposited inPlummer Hall, Salem.

In 1858, the Society came into possession of a valuablefarm of 150 acres in Topsfield, bequeathed to it by the lateDr. Treadwell, of Salem, for experimental purposes.
