Prof. Paul WhitePro-Vice Chancellor of the University ofSheffield

Message from Principal Mr. Ioannis VerveridisDear Students,

In an environment of high quality teaching and rich research activity you searched for the truth, contested the known, questioned the facts, looked for the knowledge.

You have learned that it is the way that knowledge is changing, realized, transferred, justi-fied and applied that is important.

That it is the quality of thought that prevails and matters.

You have acquired an in-depth knowledge of your respective subjects, demonstrated high levels of critical thinking and understanding, developed the ability of synthesis and analysis and learned to work hard with persistency, creativity and imagination.

You have developed your intellect, trained your mind, and cultivated your personality to acquire: Self-discipline, Self-respect, Integrity, Ethos and Sociability. But above all, you have Learned how to learn.

We wish you every success in all your future endeavors’!

Mr. Ioannis VerveridisPrincipal of CITY College

Messages from the Vice Principals

Dear graduates,

It is ironic but when you are at college you dream about graduating and when you graduate you dream about being at college. For now, enjoy the moment. But when you leave CITY, do not forget why you came here originally: to acquire skills and competencies; to prepare for life; to change your future. It will not always be easy but do not just follow other people’s path. Make your own path and leave your trails. At times you might fail but failure in never final. You will know how to get up again and continue. Do not rest on success because suc-cess is never final either. You will never be able to direct the wind. Nobody ever did! But you will know how to adjust the sails and navigate safely.

I will always be happy to have met you and I will always be proud to hear of your good news.

Dr. Megaklis PetmezasVice Principal

Dear Members of the CITY College - An International Faculty of the University of Sheffield Class of 2011,

Heartfelt congratulations on your upcoming graduation!

For a student graduation is a phase which ends the days of his/her stay in an institution. Graduation means the student is relieved of all the tension and stress that the exams bring about. It is a happy time as the student finishes an important educational phase in his/her life and moving on to newer ones. I am sure you have made your family, friends and well-wishers proud. The best part of your graduation is that you have scored a high grade to make our institution proud as well.

We have watched your progress here at our institution with great pride and, now that you are alumni, hope that you will stay close to your alma mater, visit often and keep us in-formed of your progress in your further studies, careers and life in general.

We sincerely hope that you will keep on maintaining this high standard in all endeavors you undertake in future. Congratulation and best wishes as you move into a new part of life!

Prof. Panayiotis H. Ketikidis, BSc, MSc, Ph.DVice Principal - Research, Innovation & External Relations

“You joined us on the catapult of higher education few years ago. If you reflect on who you were and who you have become in such a short time, you will feel dizzy by the acceleration. We have to leave your hand now; it was wonderful to hold you that far! You got your own power and speed now. Enjoy the trip.”

Message of the Head of the Business Administration and Economics DepartmentAs this is my first year in the position of Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department here at CITY College, I would like to take the opportunity and write a few words as a reflection for this exciting period.

For many of you, the academic environment will shortly become a memory. For some others, who will continue studying at another level, new paths of education will open. But for all of you, new opportunities and challenges will be awaiting. And I am certain that there are prom-ises to be kept by all of you!

If I had to describe this academic year, I would definitely describe it as the year of enhancement and of a very good cooperation built among us. Together we have created new learning ex-periences; together we have identified and resolved issues, together we have developed new programs and events. And all these initiatives took place under one fundamental condition: the student is and always will be at the center of our operation.

One of the many things we have created this year is the yearbook you hold in your hands which is a visual representation of the events and activities that took place during 2010-2011. This is a great work done mainly by students and for the students. And this is the philosophy we try to instill through out our School: “We want our students to be initiators; we want our students to be leaders; we want our students to be sensitive to social issues; we want our students to be action and result oriented”.

At this point, I would like to wish to each one of you health and balance to your lives. I strongly believe that if you have those, you can develop your talents and your abilities to a great extend. You do have all important attributes to succeed in life: you have acquired a degree from a top university, you have gotten knowledge and invaluable experiences through classes, company visits, seminars and workshops; complement those with hard work and passion and the success will come.

Dear graduates, on behalf of our Department, on behalf of all academic and administrative professionals, we wish you best of luck!

Message from the General Administrator of American University of Tirana

Following my considerable experience in marketing and public relations during my pro-fessional life, I enrolled in this Master programme first because I was interested to share my practical knowledge with the others in the group and at the same time gain from their experience. After all these months that I have attended the programme, I can definitely ap-prove that there is not even one day which passes by that I do not apply what is taught there. I would recommend this programme to everyone who wants to have a brilliant career in marketing and public relations, apart from their background or experience.

This is devel-oped further by the research activities of the students themselves in exploring topics as part of their course work, in having the opportunity to be involved in project work for real clients and in the completion of a dissertation. Therefore, graduates are well equipped to successfully follow fulfilling career paths in many diverse areas of industry and academia.

Message from the Head of the DepartmentThe department of psychology at City started its operation back in 1999 with 7 students. Nearly 12 years later it has grown and matured. The quality of the programme has attracted candidates from Greece and the neighboring Balkan countries, as well as Ukraine, Germany, USA, Canada, and China. Today more than 100 students are enrolled in its BSc, MSc and PhD programmes.

Our BSc graduates have been accepted in a number of high quality postgraduate institu-tions in Europe, and, according to their reports, they have been very well prepared academi-cally, personally, and professionally. Some of our graduates have already become academic staff in prestigious universities, while others are pursuing careers in private practice, state organizations, institutions or the media. Indeed, more than 50 options await graduates, in fields such as Clinical, Counselling, Personality, Social, Health, Developmental, Educational, Industrial and Organizational, Exercise and Sport, Media, Military, Engineering, Consumer, Environmental, Group, Family, Women, Religion, Law, Peace, Addictions, etc.

Psychology is an exciting discipline and one of the fastest growing university subjects. Be-yond pure basic or applied science, psychology is about giving, sharing, serving and help-ing. It is one of the few subjects that offers knowledge for both professional and personal growth and development. It also cultivates development of critical thinking, written and oral skills as well as research skills. It does, however, require continuous studying and de-velopment.

You worked hard to get a prestigious degree. Congratulations! You are among the very best. Make sure you never stop and nothing will stop you. Always be a student.

Keep in touch, Dr Angelos RodafinosHead of Psychology Department

The Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology is located at Koromila Buidling (24, Proxenou Koromila street). The education offered by the Department aims at:

> enabling students to acquire specialised and up-to-date scientific knowledge on psychological foundations, as well as to provide a basis for their personal, social and cognitive development

> developing students’ skills in learning, critical thinking and reasoning, and knowl-edge and respect for diverse cultures and individual differences

> developing the skills necessary to present their opinions in a professional, principled and constructive way

> developing information-gathering and synthesis skills

> learning skills in quantitative and qualitative methods in order to pose questions and pursue answers through several research strategies

> developing an understanding of the environmental contexts that impact on indi-viduals and groups, enhancing their interpersonal awareness, skills, and experience working in groups towards a common goal or series of tasks

> enabling students to appreciate the evolution of the discipline, its socio-political is-sues, and a broad sense of perspective through knowledge of the history of psychol-ogy

> learning the principles of ethics and values and understanding the legal and regula-tory contexts in which psychological services are provided

passed all the modules needed and I would be awarded with my bachelor’s degree.

Name Arman KushniyanClass BSc in PsychologyAnswer During a lecture with Dr. Savvidou about implicit memo-

ries, she decided to come up with a scenario to better illustrate the way people act upon their instincts. In this particular scenario I was just walking on the street wear-ing a red wig and one of my classmates happened to see me and instinctively feel the urge to flee. After the wig additional accessories were added and I ended up looking more and more like something out of a King novel. At the end I just said “Well if you happen to see me wearing a wig, a dress and make up then you should most definitely turn around and run for your life”. After this, the entire class as well as the Dr. Savvidou burst into uncontrollable laughter. Then, somehow, from a freak-show stalking the streets I transformed into a freakshow with severe mental retardation and motor coordination disorder. Needless to say at that point everyone in the classroom was splitting their sides laughing.

Name Atlantida HasaniClass MSc in ManagementAnswer One of the moments I will never forget for sure was get-

Name Chistos SiropoulosClass BSc in PsychologyAnswer I will never forget the trip in Netherlands me and my

friends took.

Name Cristina – Catalina ChiritaClass MSc in ManagementAnswer Probably one year of studies is not enough to have just a

special moment. I tried to make my entire staying in CITY College special, to be involved in lots of activities and to get as much as I can from each of them. That’s why, somehow, I missed to focus on a special moment and I will remember the period spent here as a whole experi-ence that changed my life. However, for sure I will not forget each special person I’ve met and who enriched my existence.

Name Dhurata NixhaClass MSc in Psychology and CounselingAnswer As far as I come from a country with a different culture

from the one in Greece, I really had so many special and funny moments that I will not forget for all my life. Fur-thermore, Thessaloniki was really special by itself: the sea, ancient sites, taverns, cafeterias, people’s style of life, everything was special for me overall. classes, but I remember our presentation for “scrum” methodologies and the “tourist guide for earth” that we made and presented.

Name Dimitris IoannidisClass BSc in Computer ScienceAnswer During the 2nd year of my studies, at a party in Vogue

Club. I was there with Asteris, Mike and Maria. Mike was so drunk that he fell asleep in the club, and when we were trying to wake him up, he started doing some “ka-rate” moves. Everyone was laughing.

Name Dimitris StamatiouClass BA in ManagementAnswer It was in the 1st year, when my fellow students surprised

So a group member whose name will not be mentioned (Nikos) gives the perfect idea! The way to stop worrying and be-ing nervous and stressed. He brings playing cards. So our meeting results into a card game contest. And, of course, not with a usual boring “klein mein” poker game, but with a serious man game: BIRIBA!PS: Mr. Hatzi, thanks for the pass! J

SEERCThe South-East European Research Centre (SEERC) is an overseas research centre of the University of Sheffield, established as a non-profit legal entity in Thessaloniki, Greece. The centre was established by City College, the University’s International Faculty, in 2003. It is conducting multidisciplinary research in the fields of Enterprise, Innovation & Development, Information & Communication Technologies, and Society & Human Development.

Mission StatementSEERC’s mission is to support the stable and peaceful development of South-East Europe by conducting pure and applied research in and for the region. To accomplish this, SEERC will employ the existing research capacities of the University of Sheffield and CITY College by facilitating collaborations between their research staff and by developing multi-disciplinary networks of researchers from across South-East Europe.SEERC Objectives> To promote independent, objective analysis and public discussion on issues related

to the development of South-East Europe.

> To provide a forum for researchers in the SEE region.

> To initiate common research by the University of Sheffield, CITY and other academic institutions in the SEE region.

> To disseminate findings to academics, professionals, NGOs, and policy-makers through conferences, advising, published research papers, monographs, and work-ing papers.

> To disseminate important data and findings to interested members of the general public through open forums, and web and other media-based means.

> To promote cutting-edge methodology both within existing disciplines and in the development of multi-disciplinary perspectives through workshops and seminars.

> To assist in the integration of researchers from universities and research centres in the SEE region into networks of excellence.

> To draw PhD candidates from throughout the SEE region to University of Sheffield and CITY and provide them with a rich and rewarding research environment at SEERC.

The Role of SEERC as a Multidisciplinary Research Centre in the SEE RegionSEERC is fortunate that South-East Europe has been for some time the focus of a very large number of exceptionally talented and dedicated scientists, researchers, and policy analysts both within the region and throughout the world. The region has further benefited from the numerous high quality, forward thinking centres, institutes, journals, laboratories and think tanks that have chosen it as an area of concentration. The result of these efforts has been that the level of knowledge and data and calibre of analysis available to citizens, students, academics, policy-makers, politicians, NGOs, corporations and others over the past 20 years has increased dramatically. One of SEERC’s first tasks will be to draw together these vast quantities of data and interpretation in order to make them accessible to different audi-ences at different levels of sophistication and interactivity.

The presence of SEERC will, of course, add the knowledge and talents of researchers and analysts from Sheffield, CITY and affiliated faculty from inside and outside the region. SE-ERC research faculty will represent a very wide array of disciplines including - economics, political science, international relations, social policy, computer science, history, sociology, anthropology, information technology, geography, geographic information systems, engi-neering, management, urban planning, cultural studies, public health, health care informat-ics, and education - and will undertake research at both micro and macro levels, employing quantitative and qualitative methods. SEERC will also have the practical advantage of being located in Greece, which allows it to function within the EU, while being physically located within the SEE.

In addition, SEERC will serve as an information clearing house, distilling the essence of re-search on the region for use by researchers, policy makers, civil society and business in the region. The centre’s output will include timely policy briefs, electronic mapping, working papers and surveys of ongoing and recently completed research in the area, as well as jour-nal articles and monographs.

CSUCSU (CITY Students’ Union) is a five-member-student representative committee respon-sible for initiatives, decisions and arrangements related to student life and activities. The President in collaboration with the Union Officers has the authority to organise excur-sions, trips, tournaments and society meetings that take place during the academic year. The election system is based on proportional representation that allows the views of many student groups to be best expressed. The elections are held at the beginning of each aca-demic session. CSU aims to encourage an active and lively student body and a cooperation spirit among the various groups within the university. Among the aims of the CSU is the “The passing on of requests, problems and views that have to do with individual academic departments at CITY College, to the corresponding academic committees and councils”. President Leonidas SiamantasVice President & Finance Officer Milos MilutinovicPublicity & Public Relations Officer Andrei BotaWelfare & Educational Officer Sanja DjordjevicEvents & Sports Officer Vasilios Tsiamitros The Union Officers organise events that form the basis of the students’ social calendar. CSU Officers can also create new clubs if the students show a particular interest in a certain ac-tivity.

AV ClubThe AV Club has been around for 1,5 years at City College. The basic idea of the club was for students to work with multimedia equipment, create audiovisual material and represent with an alternative way, their voice and activities within the university.

Being Directed by Dr. Dimitris Dranidis and Ms. Aggeliki Papakonstantinou and accom-plished by Konstantinos Margaritis & Ioannis Boukouvalas along with the help of Kyriakos Tsochas, AV club has achieved many and different goals. The club’s portfolio consists of many different things that cover all three departments of City College showing thus its versatile identity and the need to enhance communication among the departments. Beginning with all departments’ seminars, the 70% of those has been cap-tured and is available for any student. What is more, Av club has recorded company visits, lectures & guest lectures, induction video for the Business Master’s degree, cooperated with the South – East European Research Cen-tre (SEERC) being responsible for recording interviews, helped out lecturers when recording snippets of what they were to teach when going abroad for the MBA’s, and covers Students Spring Symposium that happens every year.

On the fun side of it, it has created the college’s Christmas card hav-ing 2000+ views on YouTube, made a video trying to break the per-ception that “Computer science is for nerds/gigs” and has helped a lot of times the rest clubs (Marketing Club & the Sunrise Movement) and the City Student Union (CSU) while helping them and making posters for their activities.

Considering all these, AV Club just wanted to have some fun, help the rest and be the silent force of City College’s arsenal.

Recently formed, SUNRISE is already operating at speed in organising various projects, be-ginning with the charity event in December 2010 organised in order to collect groceries for the children of the S.O.S. Village in Thessaloniki. The huge success of this project rests with all CITY’s students and staff members who generously gave groceries and we once again thank them all for helping us in making these children’s Christmas happier and brighter. The success of this first project encouraged us at SUNRISE to immediately start thinking about the next step.

May and June 2011 are going to be months where two more projects are about to be real-ised. One of them is a blood donation project whereby CITY students and staff members are called upon to participate in being blood donors. Bearing in mind that people are in need of blood throughout the world at any moment, we at SUNRISE believe that people who are blood donors are true lifesavers. Blood donations help all sorts of people from all different backgrounds, ages and walks of life, from tiny infants to elderly individuals needing that vital surgery for one last chance at life.

The second project that SUNRISE will realise in May 2011 is in cooperation with, and on be-half of the internationally acclaimed “Doctors of the World” (DoW), entailing the collection of medicines donated by the general public. DoW is a non-profit organisation active in relief projects in third world countries and also locally, in offering medical aid to destitute people who for whatever reason cannot be treated by the local formal health care system. DoW delegations consider that access to health is a fundamental right of any person, regardless of place of birth, sex, race, social status or religion, a belief and stance that we applaud and join in wholeheartedly.

Working on these projects and cooperating with these organisations, even in a minor way, leaves one with the conviction that if only enough people shared their social awareness and their altruistically motivated participation in social solidarity activities, this world would indeed be a happier place to live in. We can thus only urge you all to join us, to join them, forming a chain around the world, uniting all peoples of all backgrounds, in making the world a better place and our generation meeting its social challenges and responsibilities in facilitating a new testament for our common future.

We can do no great things, only small things with great love. ~Mother Teresa

Sunrise ClubWe, the Social Consciousness Responsibility and Sustainability Movement (SUNRISE) of CITY College, are a group of students, alumni and staff who share the common belief and stance in life, that only if societies portray appropriate social solidarity and responsibility to socie-ties needs and furthermore live by the theorem that everyone should first start by changing himself in order to change the world, will a change and turning point occur whereby social and environmental injustices and inadequacies are ultimately corrected. In pursuance of facilitating this overall goal SUNRISE takes action by capitalizing the inspirational effort of youth and enters projects that are aimed towards aiding societies and protecting the envi-ronment.

Message from the TeamDistinguished Professors and Staff, Dear Colleagues,

We are extremely happy to finally make possible a project that we have been working for over 6 months. It was the effort and dedication of all of us to create an innovative Yearbook, which brings together snapshots of the most important moments and activities that stu-dents and staff have been part of, in the last years. We want to show our gratitude for the support provided by all the academic staff, since their encouragements pushed us to persevere in achieving this goal. Staff from the management and administration team and lecturers from all departments showed us, during all these years, that professionalism and seriousness should be values of character, and the quality of studies doesn’t stand only in the knowledge gained, but also in all the skills acquired for being a complete person, well prepared to succeed in a working environment and to be the future leaders of our society. Also, we would like to thank to all the students that promptly answered to our calls and actively participated in providing us all the testimonials, photos and information needed, so that you can have now in your hands not just a typical catalogue of individual photos, but an entire encyclopedia of the students’ life in CITY College. When we decided that CITY College should have a Yearbook, as any respectable faculty, our purpose was to gather together memories from our period of studies, because after years “verba volant, scripta manent”. For us, as an entire team, was an unique experience of project management, where we had the chance to put in practice all the knowledge we gained and the skills we acquired during studies. Our mission is to give to students the possibility of taking their experiences and memories from studies in their life journey. Our vision is to build every year a network of graduates in all the fields taught in CITY College, useful for their future careers and for the faculty’s annals as well. In regards to the result, we let you all evaluate to which extent we achieved our goal. However, we consider that the truly realization of our work will be appreciated after years, and, as Martin Luther King Jr. was saying, “if we are to go forward, we must go back and rediscover those precious values – that all reality hinges on moral foundations”.Not least, we would like to show our thanks to Dr. Dimitris Nikolaidis, Ms. Angeliki Papakon-stantinou, Ms. Lorena Ntonto, Dr. Anna Sotiriadou, Dr. Angelos Rodafinos and Ms. Natasha Kasiara, among all the other members of the staff that gave their support in mobilizing all the people from CITY College in finishing this project. In conclusion, we would like to wish to all graduates: “try not to become people of success, but rather people of value” (Albert Einstein). Not least, we would like to thank Dr. Nikolaidis, Ms. Papakonstantinou, Dr. Rodafinos, Ms. Kasiara, Dr. Sotiriadou among all the other members of the staff that gave their support in mobilizing all the people from CITY College in finishing this project.
