Walking through the streets of the inner city with summer’s heat still radiating off the pavements and autumn’s

golden wand transforming leaves to a heavenly array of vibrant reds and yellows it seems as if the demolition phase is far behind us and on nearly every block construction is well under way.

With all the outward signs pointing towards regeneration culture and creative energy is bursting forth around every corner.

Evident in the vivid murals that still adorn buildings’ vast vacant concrete walls around the central city courtesy of Spectrum, the vibrant street art festival that ran throughout the summer, there is much to see and experience to fill your cup to overflowing.

May signals the return of the much

anticipated annual International Jazz and Blues Festival. With a stellar line-up of renowned local and world famous international talent, the 2016 festival offers a range of accomplished musicians to entertain us beyond our wildest dreams (read more about the festival highlights on page 15).

To celebrate the long awaited re-opening of the Art Centre’s Great Hall the CSO will christen the newly restored concert venue with a performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, which kicks off CSO’s Winter Series.

The revamped hall that has been nominated in the 2016 Canterbury Heritage Awards will serve as the magnificent backdrop to an evening’s entertainment. Savour the full force of these famous violin concertos over a three course meal and wine from

SPACE KADETT

A new creative hub, Space Academy satiates hunger pangs and administers caffeine hits during the day and morphs into a cool

bar and exhibition space by night.

A former panel beater’s garage at 371 St Asaph Street has been transformed into a collaborative creative space complete with

ground floor cafe, Kadett, which becomes the Space Academy bar come 4pm and even includes a one-washbasin, one-woman hair salon, Doki at the front of the building.

Kadett owners Gareth Talbot and Mirabel Oliver were inspired by the minimalist modernism of Scandinavian and Japanese design.

Over a 12 month period together with the help and good humour of their friends, the couple worked tirelessly while working full time jobs to create the homespun fit out, which includes timber and steel tables, and a concrete block counter.

Lovers of seasonal homegrown produce the pair makes all their cabinet salads and sandwiches fresh on site every day and like to support other local small businesses by offering customers Grizzly Bagels, Cakes by Anna, organic veggies from Rattletrack Organic Farm, delicious teas from Mikaku in Governor’s Bay and of course last but not least, the coffee which comes from Ris’tretto, roasted out at Waikuku Beach.

As well as keen foodies who make all their own pickles, chutneys, jams, and kimchi for their sandwiches, Mirabel, who also has an artistic streak, handcrafts all of the beautiful ceramic tableware.

Open Monday to Saturday Kadett is the place to hang out at your leisure pouring over the paper or catching up with friends.

W ith a history spanning three generations, Christchurch’s Corlet Family has been supplying vehicles to

Cantabrians for over 70 years. Quality product, a wealth of experience,

and commitment to providing a personal service are the cornerstones of Corlet’s longevity and success in the motor industry.

Stocking around 30-35 cars at any one time, Dean Corlet personally ensures the quality of each vehicle imported into New Zealand with regular bi-monthly trips to Japan.

“Other dealers often ask why I don’t simply buy in cars over the internet and the answer is always down to quality,” says Dean.

With an emphasis on “clean, honest” stock, that has largely been hand picked, Dean has full confidence in the selection of vehicles they offer at very competitive prices, which are achievable due to their low overheads.

“Our customers frequently complement us on the high level of presentation of our cars, and we have always taken great pride in being recognised as fair and honest businessmen.”

All vehicles are presented to high franchise standards, are mileage certified and guaranteed, VTNZ complied and have

had complete radiation checks carried out on all stock to ensure optimal safety for their customers.

A relaxed and unpressured buying experience is undoubtedly another reason Corlet Motor Company enjoys its many repeat customers over the years.

“It’s important consumers receive the best possible information and genuine advise, so they can make an informed decision that they will be happy with,” says Dean.

Given that customers are buying directly from the man who cherry picks his stock, they can be rest assured they are receiving the best value for money.

As Dean travels regularly to Japan if there is ever a specific make and model customers are interested in but can’t see on their website, Dean may be able to source for a one-off buy fee.

As an MTF Authorised and Autosure Approved Dealer Corlet Motor Company is able to offer customers competitive finance and warranty options as well as trade-ins on most car makes and models.

Visit www.corletmotorco.co.nz to view their selection of quality cars and contact Dean Corlet anytime on 03 365-8102 or 021 325-037 to arrange a viewing.

QUALITY CARS YOU CAN TRUST

For affordable second hand Japanese cars with low mileage and immaculate presentation, a family’s automotive legacy continues.

“QUALITY IS PARAMOUNT, AS IS IMMACULATE PRESENTATION AND VALUE FOR MONEY”

Offering quality cars at fair prices Corlet Motor Company is a one man operation run by Dean Corlet who maintains their reputation for quality and value for money with regluar trips to Japan where he cherry picks each vehicle.

Supported by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust & CCDU

P erfectly positioned and internationally renowned, Re:START Mall has grown from being a genius way for small businesses to re-establish themselves

in the city – via a collection of shipping crate conversions – to an iconic, much-loved shopping destination in the heart of the city.

Anchored by Ballantynes department store, Re:START sports an enviable collection of gift stores and leading fashion retailers nestled among plenty of tasty, ready-to-eat offerings and some of the city’s best coffee.

As Christchurch’s inner city fashion hub, Re:START Mall is a one-stop-shop for all your fashion essentials and accessories. Among the brightly-coloured village of refashioned shipping containers you’ll find 14 stylish retail boutiques housing the city’s leading fashions – from exclusive, high-end New Zealand labels through to suave and savvy international streetwear,

designer one-offs, on-trend activewear and exceptional footwear, with the latest lines dropping daily.

Looking for a gift or something special and uniquely Christchurch? Re:START Mall is home to several exceptional design and gift stores where you’ll find a collection of carefully curated, and in many instances, locally-made must-haves.

They’ve also got grooming covered, with an industry-leading hair salon and barber shop. And with an exceptional line-up of food offerings, one of the toughest decisions you’ll make during your visit will be deciding between the many temptations available, which include wood-fired pizza fresh from the oven and Christchurch’s – perhaps even New Zealand’s – favourite souvlaki.

Add regular live music, three banks and a Post Office to the mix and it’s no wonder Re:START Mall has become a hub of activity in the central city.

THE CITY’S GOT HEART

Keen coffee connoisseurs in Christchurch will fall in love with a new gem within the central city. Sharing the ground floor with the

newly opened Centre of Contemporary Arts (CoCA) on Gloucester Street is Lux Espresso.

The handmade Japanese tiles that line a voluptuous curved timber-topped counter gives the space an appropriate artisan feel that fits well within its artistic surroundings.

Serving tasty organic Allpress espresso from every day of the week, tasty baked morsels from artisan French bakers across town at Le Panier, and the unpretentious, yet boldly experimental Cakes by Anna join other cabinet culinary creations made by their star in-house chef Chloe who brings in fresh seasonal produce from her own backyard to give her cooking a hearty homemade vibe.

Run by hospitality guru TP who uses his innovative culinary expertise to develop seasonal bites in collaboration with Chloe, together with his coffee skills that are backed up by his equally vibrant and diverse bunch of baristas – the undoubted secret to this cafe’s success and the draw card that keeps customers coming back day after day.

While a little closer to the heart of the city the new BNZ building on 120 Hereford Street

houses C4’s latest incarnation that is Little Dispatch. As its name suggests, it has bags of the central city roastery’s beans for sale and of course freshly made coffee by the cup Monday to Friday from 7:30am.

With its focus firmly on the coffee made by C4’s experienced baristas, this makes the perfect stop to refuel before, after or during a visit to the all-new inner city Scorpio Books. Pull up one of their colourful industrial chairs and savour a cup of gold with a baked treat and drink in the regularly changing exhibitions of local artists that grace the crisp white gallery-esque walls.

Another inner city cafe that’s worth a visit if you haven’t already is the Black & White Coffee Cartel at 83 Victoria Street. Cashing in on the success of his first cafe, Wellington smash-hit Memphis Belle, Bink Bowler has brought Wellington’s Havana Coffee to the caffeine aficionados of Christchurch.

Sublime single origin coffee can be enjoyed as a pour-over or through a siphon for the ultimate coffee experience, alongside the standard, but by no means ordinary, espresso made by baristas who know their stuff. There’s plenty of room to hang out in the spacious industrial styled interior, or soak up the sun on a slice of emerald lawn out front.

CAFFEINE RICH INNER CITY HANGOUTSFor the caffeine fiend there are a host of hip new hangouts in the

central city to keep your energy levels humming.

The latest foodie sensation to join the stellar lineup of restaurants and bars along St Asaph Street is Empire Bar & Izakaya.

The third venture from the creator’s of Baretta and The Cuban (both also on St Asaph Street), Empire offers an entirely different cuisine from the other two in an equally diverse setting.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional izatkaya (informal Japanese gastro pub) the creators melded high-end contemporary finishes.

From the moody faux schist exterior to the black hexagonal tiled curved walls within, its brooding atmosphere is punctuated by clusters of wired caged pendants intimate plush leather buttoned booths and illuminated displays of authentic samurai swords and armor, this ‘old meets new’ vibe has been successfully pulled off to create a pumping after-dark cavernous retreat that has a slightly underground feel.

If you were an avid fan of Sala Sala and were disappointed to see them close up shop, then you’ll be delighted to hear that Sala Sala’s former chef Tadayuki Kuroiwa, is back in the starring role of head chef at Empire where you can have a front row seat to watch him

work in the open kitchen at the restaurant’s rear.

Much like Spanish tapas, the menu offers a tantalising selection of shared dishes. Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers that use all parts of the animal) and Kushiyaki (grilled meats, fish and vegetables) are joined by a selection of new style Japanese dishes that give the chefs a little creative licence to mix things up.

Other dishes on the menu include classic favourites like miso soup, pork gyoza (pan fried dumplings) and crispy chicken karaage, alongside more exotic delicacies such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and steamed corn custard with roast eel and radish.

Sweet treats are the joyfully unexpected soba and miso cookies, Japanese tea infused ice creams, black sesame panna cota and torched pear, almond meringue with umeshu jelly.

Open seven days from 4pm until late, Empire ups the ante on Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm with a live DJ.

Make your booking for dinner or special event (in the upstairs VIP area) online at www.empirebar.co.nz or phone 03 260 2606 or pop in for a Japanese beer, a shot of saki or a cocktail at 172 St Asaph Street.

THE RISING OF ANEMPIRE

St Asaph Street’s after dark dining and drinking precinct welcomes a sharp shooting contender for your attentions.

W ith Europe leading the world in the wave of electric bikes, New Zealand is only just waking up to this new dawn and two

Christchurch business partners are at the forefront of the competition.

Riki Foulsham and Rhonda Wicksteed are behind Christchurch’s very own electric bicycle company, iCycle Electric. Although the seed was planted some eight years ago when Riki first experimented with retrofitting an electric hand cycle with a lithium battery pack with explosive results, they had to wait for technology to catch up.

Opening their modest showroom on Cashel Street just before Christmas last year, they have put in the hard yards to ensure a quality product they are proud to put their name to. RIKONDA, an amalgamation of their first names, the pair traveled far and wide to find the experts to bring their vision to fruition.

With Riki’s background in engineering and Rhonda’s in assistive technologies, they developed the concept for a range of e-bike styles in a range of colours alongside an e-scooter and an e-drift trike in close collaboration with their team of engineers who are constantly refining their range for optimal efficiency and economy.

Serious savings on fuel can be had with one bike battery charge only costing 8-12 cents, which takes you 50-70kms traveling at speeds of around 30kms.

Popular with commuters to the inner city who are keen on saving money on gas and parking can still get some form of exercise with five power-assist modes.

Visit Riki and Rhonda at the iCycle Electric showroom at 285 Cashel Street where you can learn more about the different styles on offer and test ride one, or go online to www.icycleelectric.co.nz for an overview of their products.

bed, at the best price come and see Steve and the team. With 20 years experience they know beds inside out.

Getting a good night’s rest starts with a good bed. Support and comfort are the two key factors considerations when making an investment in your

wellbeing that will stand you in good stead for a whole decade.

Once your mattress reaches the ten year mark it will need to be replaced. As we grow older and our body shape changes, our mattresses need to reflect these changes to ensure optimal support and comfort are maintained.

Respected New Zealand bed maker Design Mobel is one of Bedpost’s most sought-after brands. Using cutting edge technology, their mattresses combine a natural latex core to provide premium support and comfort, with a pocket spring technology, which is designed to mold to your individual body shape and weight.

Although Design Mobel no longer makes bed frames, Christchurch’s Bedpost owner, Steve Ferguson says many people who still own Design Mobel frames don’t necessarily need to replace the whole frame, but can instead order replacement slats at a fraction of the cost and

increase the longevity of their investment. Replacement slats may also be a cost effective alternative for those whose mattress still has a lot of life left in it but whose slats have seen better days.

Sourcing quality replacement slats from Germany, each corrugated slat is made by layering laminated strips of timber together, which create just right amount of tension to give the support where you need it, while being flexible enough to mold to your unique body shape.

Alongside Design Mobel other reputable industry names found at Bedpost include Beautyrest, Sealy Posturepedic, Sleepmaker, and Tempur, offering customers a wide range of different mattress and base options to suit particular preferences and specific requirements unique to an individual’s age, body type, weight and lifestyle.

Visit the friendly team at 86 Moorhouse Avenue for helpful bed buying advice and to view catalogues of the full ranges on offer or let your fingers do the walking and visit them online at www.bedpost.co.nz for an overview of products and valuable bed buying tips.

THE BIG SLEEPUpgrading mattress and frames needn’t be an expensive exercise if

you get the right advice from the bed experts.

You could save hundreds of dollars by opting for replacement slats instead of spending more than you need to for a whole bed frame.

M by a pair of enterprising sisters, Fiona Parish and Christine Lane, right here in Christchurch Nutmylk Co. offers a delicious

range of raw organic nut milks. Hand pressed every night for the following day, the two women established Nutmylk Co. just 12 months ago.

The sisters’ lucky break came when a friend suggested their new product to the manager of chilled foods at Merivale’s Fresh Choice. “With an initial order of nine bottles demand grew rapidly from there. It’s been a very organic process,” explains Fiona.

By using only the best organic ingredients the Nutmylk Co. guarantees authentic, creamy milks made with almond, hazelnut and cashew

nuts. Free of dairy, soy, gluten, refined sugar, preservatives and any other nasty additives means the body can absorb higher levels of vitamins and minerals.

Containing high amounts of healthy omega fats, calcium, iron, and magnesium, Fiona says it greatly increases the nutritional profile of a smoothie or your daily coffee.

Their Barista blend is now available in selected cafés around town including inner city coffee haunts MADE Espresso Bar (254 Montreal St), Black & White Coffee Cartel (83 Victoria St) and Pure (100 Bealey Ave)

Bottles of the good stuff can be found at selected New World and Raeward Fresh supermarkets, Merivale Fresh Choice, Pico Wholefoods and many more.

Over 45 years of keeping your family safe

A s the sport utility market constantly expands, so are more manufacturers adding versatility into that segment.

The Suzuki Motor Corporation in Japan weren’t going to let an opportunity slip by, and have developed a stablemate to the ever-popular Grand Vitara.

Simply called Vitara, the newcomer is significantly smaller than the Grand but, nevertheless, it does represent the values a buyer would expect from an SUV. And the Vitara has been designed to capture the imagination of buyers, it is trendy, funky and has bold, vivid colours which can be mixed in a multitude of two-tone variations.

The Vitara lands here in five variants, if

BY ROSS KIDDIE

you take into account an entry-level manual model. Interestingly, there’s a choice of two (front) and two four-wheel-drive models, all powered by a 1.6-litre, petrol-fuelled, four-cylinder engine. The test car was the range-topping All-Grip model Limited.

In four-wheel-drive form the Vitara Ltd lands at $35,990, or $36,990 if you want two-tone paint. However, bear in mind that the range starts at $27,990, and there are a host of colour options and choices within the range.

For that money the Ltd buyer gets a healthy range of specification; major items include panoramic roof, paddle-shifters, satellite navigation, cruise control with

speed limiter, smartphone connectivity, and reversing camera. The latter is part of the kit which earns the Vitara a five-star safety rating.

As mentioned, the Vitara is powered by a 1586cc engine which is rated by Suzuki at 86kW with 156Nm of torque available at 4400rpm. It is a twin-camshaft type with 16-valves, and it works tirelessly. Even though it has the ability to rev freely, in the interests of fuel economy it is managed so that it works low down, the gearing arranged accordingly.

Suzuki claims a 6.3-litre per 100km (45mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating for the four-wheel-drive Vitara.

Suzuki has departed from the continuously variable automatic which still sits in other Suzuki product such as the S-Cross which loans the Vitara its platform, and both have very similar engines. Instead, the Vitara gets a traditional six-speed automatic gearbox, and it stands out for its decisive shifts and ratios which allow for respectable acceleration and open road speed economy.

The Vitara will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 10.8sec, and can complete an overtaking manoeuvre in 7.3sec (80km/h to 120km/h). While these figures aren’t electric, they are adequate for this type of vehicle.

The Vitara feels natural through the steering, while the high quality Continental tyres (215/55 x 17in) have quiet-riding properties along with high grip levels.

Interestingly, the Vitara lands here from the Northern Hemisphere. It was developed in Europe and is built in Hungary. That matters little, it is engineered with the quality standards we have come to expect from Suzuki’s Japanese factories.

The concept is interesting, and I really like the deliberate effort Suzuki has gone too to make the Vitara appealing in terms of bright colours and eye-catching design.
