How to Implement the Simplified Licensing Updates for Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 Overview

On 20 July 2007, Citrix implemented licensing improvements to help customers maintain license compliance. Prior to 20 July, customers who purchased Citrix Presentation Server™ Enterprise Edition received 2 product licenses per user and those who purchased Platinum Edition received 5 licenses per user. The Presentation Server End-User License Agreement (EULA) states that the multiple licenses included with Presentation Server 4.5 Platinum and Enterprise Editions must be used as a single license. Hence, if a user connects to one component of Presentation Server, this equates to one license across all components. The new simplified licensing updates consolidate licenses to make it easier to comply with the license policy set forth in the EULA.

Before you begin

What you will need:

HRP01 and AMC Extensions Update – These updates enable simplified license consumption, usage, and management, consistent with Presentation Server EULA. These can be downloaded from Citrix.com and MyCitrix.com.

Streaming Client 1.1 – This client enables Application Streaming to utilize/share Presentation Server licenses. Download the client from Citrix.com.

MyCitrix.com – Visit this site to access and download new Platinum Presentation Server licenses. You’ll need your logon credentials so keep them handy.

Implementing simplified licensing updates

The following steps must be followed precisely to ensure a smooth transition to the new simplified licensing:

1. Apply HRP01 to your Presentation Servers. After applying this update, Application Streaming will be able to consume Presentation Server Platinum or Enterprise licenses.

2. Update your users to Presentation Server Streaming Client version 1.1. This update is needed to allow Application Streaming to share the Presentation Server license.

3. Update Access Management Console Extensions. This update allows Platinum customers to set the server edition to Platinum Edition.

4. Go to MyCitrix to receive new Platinum license(s).

5. Apply new license file(s) to the Presentation Server farm.

6. Set server edition to “Citrix Presentation Server, Platinum Edition” in the Access Management Console.

Additional considerations Once the migration process is complete, the Citrix License Management Console will only show consumption for Presentation Server Platinum Edition and add-on feature licenses (if purchased separately).

Users of Presentation Server are assigned a license while using any component of Presentation Server. Disconnecting from all components of Presentation Server will release a license.

Since the SSL VPN appliance is installed in the DMZ, it is recommended that a separate license server resides there as well. For this reason, customers will continue to receive individual SmartAccess licenses for Presentation Server Platinum Edition purchases and upgrades.

When using the offline capabilities of Single Sign-on and Application Streaming, a Presentation Server license will be checked out for the duration of the lease period configured by the administrator.
