Intro and What to expect

▪ Mon-Thursday

▪ About 1 hour a day (can be slightly early some days to give time to work on homework, Wednesday especially)

▪ 8 total requirements, 6 of which require some sort of homework or to complete after this session.

▪ USE SAME NAME EVERYTIME WHEN SUBMITTING

▪ The learning link will be live for one week after the end of the course, at that time, partials will be sent out for completed work. Uncompleted work will need to be completed with a local councilor in your council

Requirement 1: A Discussion on Citizenship

▪ Discuss with your counselor what citizenship in the community means and what it takes to be a good citizen in your community. Discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of citizenship, and explain how you can demonstrate good citizenship in your community, scouting unit, place of worship, or school

What citizenship in the community means?

▪ You live in a city, town or rural area where you participate in activities that are going on, attend school and associate with other citizens of the same area.

What are the rights, duties, and obligations of citizenship?

▪ You have the right to attend school, to be able to vote in elections when you are 18, and to be safe. You have the duty to follow the Scout Law and Oath and do your part to keep the community safe. You have an obligation to keep to the laws and to assist where you are needed.

Explain how you can demonstrate good citizenship in your community, Scouting unit, place of worship or school:

▪ Be a law-abiding citizen in the community, with scouts, at school, and in church, and always strive to improve the community with a happy attitude.

Requirement 2:

▪ On a map of your community or using an electronic device, locate and point out the following:– Chief Government Buildings such as your city hall, county courthouse, and public

works/services facilities

– Fire station, police station, and hospital nearest your home

– Parks, playgrounds, recreation areas, and trails

– Historical or other points of interest

▪ Chart the organization of your local or state government. Show the top offices and tell whether they are elected or appointed.

Requirement 5

▪ With the Approval of your counselor and a parent, watch a movie that shows how the actions of one individual or group of individuals can have a positive effect on a community. Discuss with your counselor what you learned from the movie about what it means to be a valuable and concerned member of the community.

▪ Approved movies on PDF, any other movies please send me an email and I will let you know. YOU NEED TO HAVE PERMISSION FROM YOUR PARENT TO WATCH THE MOVIE, SOME ON THE LIST ARE RATED R.

▪ You will have to submit a written answer for the requirementwith Thursday's homework.

▪ Every local branch of government is structored differently, use your org chart to help identify the branch

▪ For completing this requirment you will need to submit the following:– Your issue and which branch is

Requirment 7

▪ Do the following:– Identify three charitable organizations outside of Scouting that interest you and bring

people in your community togetrher to work for the good of your community

– Pick one of the organziations you chose for requirement 7a. Using a variety of resources (including newspapers, fliers and other literature, the internet, volunteers, and employees of the organization), find out more about this organization

– With your counselor's and your parent's approval, contact the organziation you chose for requirement 7b, and find out what young people can do to help. While working on this merit badge, volunteer at least eight hours of your time for the organization. After your volunteer experience is over, discuss what you have learned with your counselor.

7a: Charitable organzizations

▪ In the United States, a charitable organization is an organization operated for purposes that are beneficial to the public interest.[47] There are different types of charitable organizations. Every U.S. and foreign charity that qualifies as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code is considered a "private foundation" unless it demonstrates to the IRS that it falls into another category. Generally, any organization that is not a private foundation (i.e., it qualifies as something else) is usually a public charity as described in Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.[48]

▪ Make sure you can volunteer with them!

▪ Select one you care about

▪ Use internet resources and call the organization

▪ For completion of a and b of this requirment you will need to submit three local charitable organizations in your community and a detail assesment of one of those three (the one you will volunteer at)

▪ 7c will be approved after your 8 hours, if not completed by next week (which I don’t expect with the social distancing in place) you will submit to a local CofC councilor

▪ Do the following– Attend a meeting of your city, town, or county council or school board, OR attend a

municipal, county, or state court session

– Choose one of the issues discussed at the meeting where a difference of opinions was expressed, and explain to your counselor why you agree with one opinion more than you do another
