The wish expressed by a certain Shinpei Goto that the products of the Shoko Horological research institute established in 1918, should be “treasured by every citizen and used with increasing satisfaction” was indeed a tall order. He came with the name citizen. Before, Mr. Goto was the mayor of Tokyo from 1911 to 1925. The first production came in 1924 with a pocket watch. In 1930, the Citizen Watch Co. ltd was founded in Tokyo. In 1956, Citizen presents the “Parashock”, the first Japanese shock-proof wristwatch then in 1958 the first alarm wristwatch and 1959 the “Parawater”, a water resistant watch. 1966 was a key date in the Japanese history with the first electronic wristwatch, the “X-8”. In 1976, appears the quartz watch with LCD as well as the first solar powered analog quartz watch. In 1982, comes the thinnest watch, water resistant to 100 meters. In 1985, it is the first diving watch with an electronic depth gauge. Today, Citizen and its subsidiary Miyota produce over 40 million of watches, 14 million under the Citizen brand. Miyota produces over 330 million movement.
