    Thesis Program

The thesis program was designed to provide an opportunity for students to

undertake research on a specific area in Computer Science. Students of theprogram may undertake research through the application of existingtechnologies or through further studies of new technologies. The thrust of theprogram is to promote and develop the expertise of students in a particular areaof Computer Science.

The output of the program is the culmination of all the knowledge required andacquired throughout the Bachelor degree program. The minimum expectationfrom the program is develop the students programming skills.

The study is a requirement for graduation and should be presented andapproved by the department in the form of a defense.

    Thesis Project

The College of Information and Communication Technology shall determine thepossible thesis projects that students of a particular batch may develop. Thesethesis projects normally belong to certain areas of research and are identifiedbefore students start developing thesis proposals. The expertise of facultymembers is commonly the determining factor in the identification of thesisresearch areas. The College should make a list of the acceptable areas ofresearch and announce these to the students. The areas of research will beapplicable to the whole batch enrolling in Thesis 1.

    Acceptable types of thesis are:

    1. Computerization of a business process2. Development of software (utilities, applications, systems, etc.)

Acceptable areas of research are:1. analysis, design, and implementation of systems2. artificial intelligence3. software engineering4. networking5. algorithms6. compilers7. web application

    Thesis Group

    1. A thesis group is composed of a minimum of two (2) and maximum of four (4)members.

    2. A thesis group shall be given a passing grade for Thesis 1 only after complyingwith all requirements of Thesis 1, which are the following:

a thesis proposal approved by the College of ICT partial documentation and completion of the system as specified

    3. If the group wishes to change their approved topic, the proponents will haveto submit and defend the new proposal. The panelist fee must be paid againby the group.

    4. In the event of a group breaking up into separate groups, the subgroupinheriting the original project proposal will be allowed to continue working onthe approved project. The subgroup proposing a new topic must have their

proposal approved. The panelist fee must be paid again by the group. Which

subgroup inherits the original proposal will be left to the discretion of theoriginal group.

    5. In cases of conflict where the group fails to decide which subgroup will inheritthe original proposal and is still determined to break-up their original group, the Thesis Coordinator reserves the right to give a failing grade to eachmember of the group for the Thesis subject they are enrolled in.

    6. All members of the original group must inform the Thesis Coordinator of theirintention to break-up the group. The Thesis Coordinator will handle eachrequest on a case-to-case basis. For matters of grave concern, the ThesisCoordinator may elevate the matter to the College Dean, as the case requires.

    7. The group has the responsibility to ensure that the thesis project is completedwithin the scheduled deadlines.

    8. All members of the group must sign the Thesis Policies and ProceduresAcceptance Form to indicate that they fully understand and accept everythingcontained in the Thesis Policies and Procedures as well as all matters pertinentto the Thesis Program.

    Meetings

Regular thesis meetings will be held, to serve as venue for students who aredoing their thesis and faculty members who are advising thesis groups, todiscuss bi-weekly accomplishments of each thesis group. A member of the group(on a rotation) will discuss the groups accomplishments and status of theirproject.

Technical matters should be briefly discussed and the Thesis Coordinator maygive advises, comments, and suggestions all for the main purpose of elevatingthe consciousness of the students regarding computer science matters. TheThesis Coordinator facilitates the meeting and may open this to lower batches fora Listen Only condition. This will promote awareness of next Thesis studentsregarding Thesis writing.

The regular thesis meetings may also serve as the venue to disseminateadditional information or to clarify issues regarding the thesis program.

The Thesis group is required to submit a status report regarding the progress oftheir thesis project every meeting.

    Thesis 1 Requirements

The following are requirements for Thesis 1, which have to be submitted to theCollege of ICT on or before the specified deadline(s):1. Log of meetings held with the students.2. Accomplished Thesis 1 Grading Sheet

based thesis) system design specifications (for system/software development based

thesis) 50% of expected system output (system prototype with complete

database structure) complete database structure (for systems development project) appendices bibliography

Failure to submit the Thesis 1 Documentation on the date and time when it is duewill mean that the group will fail in Thesis 1 regardless of whatever grade thepanelists and thesis adviser have identified initially.

    Thesis Proposal

The Thesis Proposal is a documentation of the groups project study to besubmitted to the Thesis Coordinator for approval.

    1. The proposal should have the following correct and complete contentspecification:

abstract introduction statement of the problem objectives scope and limitations project rationale review of related studies methodology of the study theoretical framework description of the existing system

expected output(s) sample screen design of the whole system, diagrams (e.g. DFDs, ERDs, Story Boards, etc.)

schedule of activities work assignment of each group member

    2. The Thesis Adviser, before submission to the Thesis Coordinator, must signthe thesis proposal for the Thesis Proposal Defense. Thesis proposals withoutthe signature of the Thesis Adviser will not be accepted nor scheduled for aThesis Proposal Defense.

    Thesis Defense

The Thesis Proposal defense is conducted to ascertain if the students aretechnically prepared to undergo thesis development. A project, which is worth a

thesis, is identified and completely defined through the presentation andexplanation by the students, the proper questioning by the panelists, and therequirement of appropriate revisions.

Mechanics1. The thesis proposal defense shall take a maximum of one and a half hour for

the following: 15-minute presentation of the proposal question and answer discussion/deliberation on the feasibility of the proposal evaluation of the proposal

    2. Failure to submit the thesis proposal on the date and time when it is due willmean that the group will fail in Thesis 1.

    3. Failure to deliver an approved thesis proposal within the specified period willalso mean that the group will fail in Thesis 1.

    Panel Members

    1. A panel is composed of two (3) faculty members from the College. The ThesisCoordinator shall review and recommend approval of the thesis proposal. Ifthe Thesis Coordinator is the adviser of the group to undergo a ThesisProposal defense, the Dean or any qualified I.T. faculty member may take thecoordinators place.

    2. A panelist from the computer industry or from the client of the project mayalso be invited to review and recommend approval of the thesis proposal.

acceptable evaluation of the thesis proposal is achieved or the final deadlinefor submission of all thesis proposals is due. Failure to get acceptance for athesis proposal means the group fails Thesis 1 (Unacceptable Project).

    Thesis Grade

The Thesis 1 grade is given only at the end of the semester when allrequirements for Thesis 1 have been complied with. Students should not beinformed of any partial grades identified during various phases of the Thesis 1semester. The following serves as the guidelines for determining the Thesis 1grade of a student.1. If the group has an approved thesis proposal within the specified period, a

minimum grade of 3.0 may be given to each student of the group.2. However, based on the criteria indicated below, the grade of each student

    may be higher than 3.0:

2.1. Thesis 1 Deliverables and Output (40 pts.) To be rated by theThesis Coordinator2.1.1. The output of the group is complete in accordance with the

specified requirements (20 pts.)2.1.2. The output of the group is correct in accordance with the theories

and concepts of the topic category (20 pts.)2.2. Thesis 1 Proposal Defense Performance (35 pts.) To be rated by

the Thesis Panelists2.2.1. The student was responsible for authoring at least 1/n (where n is

the number of members in a group) of the content of the ThesisDocumentation (10 pts.)

2.2.2. The student contributed significant ideas for discussion (10 pts.)2.2.3. The student correctly answered questions given by the panelists

(10 pts.)2.2.4. The student contributed to the development of visual aids and

exhibited preparedness in presenting the topic assigned fordiscussion (5 pts.)2.3. Work Behavior (25 pts.) To be rated by the Thesis Adviser
