Dear Readers, From the desk of Major Mary

“It’s just a little Thing... not Really!”

Have you noticed that much of life is made of events or happenings or opportunities or things that might fall into a classification of a very

little thing, but not really? You may have another way of describing them, but you know the kinds of things I am referring to.

On the negative side it may be that person at work who gets on your nerves. You come into the office with a great attitude and within minutes after a short interaction your day is ruined. It’s a little thing, but not really.

It may be that conversation that you seem to have over and over again with your boss or your spouse or your children. You have had the same conversation a hundred times. Nothing ever changes. You talk about changes, but nothing ever does. It’s a little thing, but not really.

Maybe it is that sound in your car. It is a rattle. Or it is a squeak. You cannot pinpoint where it is coming from. Everything else is quiet and smooth, except for that noise. It’s a little thing, but not really.

It could be that bump on the side of your face. Not a big bump. It turns an odd shade of red. It is a little tender. Finally you go to the doctor and he says, “We better have it checked out.” It appears to be a little thing, but maybe it’s not really.

It may be that cough that just will not go away. You have taken some over the counter cough medicine. That helps for a few minutes but it starts up again when you lay down. You call the nurse and she says, “You better come in. It sounds like a little thing. But maybe it’s not.”

Maybe it is that thing that your husband does, or does not do, that hurts you, or disappoints you, or makes you question whether or not he really loves you. He says he does. But if he does would he not take your feelings into consideration? Why does he keep doing that? Why is he not listening to me? You try to ignore it. Everything else seems to be going well. Do I really want to stir things up? It’s such a little thing, but maybe not. continued on page 3>>>

On the positive side there are many little things that can make a profound difference in how you approach the day.

The person who you meet suggests you go for coffee at Starbucks and pays for your coffee. It’s a little thing, but not really.

You stand before an audience and say, “I do.” These are two little words that change lives forever. It’s a little thing, but not really.

The note you received in the mail from the friend you have not seen in a long time. It’s a little thing, but not really.

You led a prayer at church. You could not remember what you were trying to say and had a long awkward pause. You stumbled all over yourself. And you felt like you did a horrible job. But one of the older men came to you and said, “You did a great job! Thank you for your prayer.” It’s a little thing, but not really.

You walked into the new church for the first time. You are all alone in a new city and in a new church. A young couple saw and came toward, introduced themselves, and asked if you would like to sit with them. They introduced you to several members, invited you to their class, and took you home for lunch. It’s a little thing, but not really.

Jesus talked about offering a cup of cold water in His name (Mark 9:41). He told stories of stopping to help a stranger. He rebuked His disciples when they tried to stop little children when they ran to Him. They seem like little things, but not really.

Let us try to be the person who does the things that make life more positive and don’t be the person who does that little thing that can turn a day wrong. Do that thing that we would call a little thing, but not really.(shared from Daily Heartlight)

Let’s pray for...

The Western Territory Staff Songsters under the direction of Neil Smith, as they prepare for their UK Tour and, in particular, their time at Southsea. May it be a God-honouring and soul-winning experience.

Our CAMEO and Friendship (Home League) Clubs as they share weekly, and on their special weekend (Apr 27/28) under the leadership of Lt. Col Kirsten Owen.

Majors Colin & Rosemary Cowdery on their return from Pakistan - that they will be refreshed and reinvigorated as they enjoy a well-earned rest before their next appointment.

Nikki and her helpers as they share with the parents and children who come each Thursday, and in such good numbers, to Angel Feet.

For the ongoing building up of our Nursery, and for the children and adults to experience a real sense of God’s love.

For all those who come into our buildings, for whatever reason, that they may recognise that we have no other agenda but ‘Jesus’, and that they might respond accordingly.

Continued Prayers :

Western Territory Staff Songsters

This should be an exciting weekend and we hope you are pushing the event with friends and family and, of course, praying for the Songsters.

The Songsters will be arriving in Southsea mid-afternoon on the Friday, straight from Heathrow. After setting up, they will have a welcome meal before going to their billets. Those who are so kindly hosting our friends should note that, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the main cooked meal will be at the hall which, hopefully, will make billeting a little easier.

On Saturday morning, our guests will be involved in Open Air Witness, probably in Palmerston Rd (other venues are being considered). Then we have our welcome festival at 7pm in the Citadel. Extra seating on risers will be installed at the rear of the gallery. Tickets are reserved and we are keeping the price as low as possible, thanks to the generosity of our own Band and Songsters. Tickets are selling well, so the message is, ‘book early!!’

On Sunday our meetings are at the revised times of 10:45 and 4:30 (Praise Festival) and we hope you will be able to share what we know will be a memorable Sunday. We have use of St.Swithun’s and Southsea Infants’ car parks in Collingwood Rd on Saturday evening & Sunday afternoon, but not the Sunday morning. Further details to follow.

Southsea Citadel Band (B/M Mark Streather) and Southampton Sholing Band (B/M Brian Jones) united in a musical concert at Sholing Corps

to raise funds for Southampton Mission, a Christian city-wide ecumenical organisation (represented by City Missioner Chris Davis) that provides practical requirements for people in need.

To a full congregation, the Concert commenced in rousing style with the March ‘Rosehill’ by the united Bands. Other united items were ‘Procession to Covenant’ (Himes) based on the song ‘O love that will not let me go’; ‘The King’; March ‘The Fount’ (Gullidge) and the band song ‘A Miracle’.

Following a lively congregational song, ‘Jesus is my light’, Southsea band contributed ‘Shine on us’, a well known modern Hymn written in the style of a Bolero. Other contributions by Southsea band were - a moving vocal Solo by Deputy Bandmaster Mark Burton entitled ‘The First Step’ with band vocal backing; Selection from ‘Jesus Folk’; Songster setting ‘People need the Lord’ (which exemplified the introduction by Chris Smith of the work of the Southampton Mission); and ‘That will be Glory’ (Darren Shaw).

Sholing Band offered ‘Days of Elijah’, ‘The Healing Waters’, ‘St. Clements Variations’, ‘Where I love to be’, and an excellent rendition by Steve Jones of the Trombone Solo ‘You Can’t Stop God’. Darren Shaw gave the Bible reading and thoughts from Genesis Chapter 32 referring to Jacob’s struggle and eventual victory. Prayer was offered by Sholing Band Sergeant Brian Edwards. Following the concert a further time of fellowship was enjoyed over tea and cakes. (Photo – A.M.) T.M.

Salvation Brass

Salvation Brass (Dean Jones) and Café Church together brought a power- packed ministry of music, fun and spiritual challenge. The Band’s open-

air ministry in Palmerston Road precinct commenced with ‘Praise party’, played whilst each member randomly walked amongst the shoppers, many of whom stopped to listen. The band then reformed to continue their programme including ‘Praise my Soul’ after which they returned to the hall to continue their programme in the evening at Café Church (arranged by Songster Sandra Thomas and her team).

The Band commenced playing at the rear of the hall whilst walking through the congregation to the platform bringing an excellent sound of joyful music, after which Captain Lynne Shaw (AO) made introductions. Major Val Mylechreest (THQ) introduced ‘musical inflatables’ with the use of two huge beach balls, joyfully thrown around the hall in a ‘pass the parcel’ fashion, the unexpected recipient invited to give an answer to a chosen question found on the ball.

‘Swing Time Religion’ was followed by a powerful and emotional testimony by Paul Dymot who had recently returned from a charity visit to Haiti where he was challenged by the Country’s poor conditions.

Other items by the band included ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ and the Songster arrangement ‘God and God Alone’ with a multimedia presentation. Southsea Citadel Singing Company (Amanda Streather) supported with ‘Draw me close to You’ and ‘Solid Rock’.

Page 11: Citadel Scene April 2013

Salvation BrassMajor Val led a reflective period commencing with a trombone feature of the Song ‘From that sacred hill’ stating that ‘creation proves the creator, the cross proves his love’ and reminding of General John Gowans words – ‘God is Love, the cross is saying , Calvary is proof enough’.

‘Wondrous Love’ (Dean Jones), with a powerful message, was played with a multimedia presentation depicting aspects of the Cross. Major Val invited prayer requests which were written on a paper chain and placed on the Holiness table for continued prayers, and as the evening drew to a close with the song ‘King of kings’ and Benediction, a final momentous rendition of ‘Jesus Christ, Superstar’ was played by the Band. A magnificent time of worship, personal challenge and fellowship. T.M. (Pics TJM)

Big Collection

There were fourteen ‘standing days’ confirmed for this year (with the possibility for two more). So far the sum of £837.53 has been

collected during the month of February. This is excellent bearing in mind the inclement weather we have experienced! Hopefully, the next few months will bring us brighter weather. (although April is known for its showers which bring forth May flowers)

Just a reminder of those ‘standing days’ over the next couple of months:Sat 6th Apr - Tesco, Solent Rd, Havant; Collector: Mike Proctor

Fri 19th Apr - Citywide, hourly slots 9am-4pm - plenty of collectors needed.

Sat 11th May - Waitrose, Southsea: Roger Budden & Pauline De Souza, 9am-11pm; Olga Ralph 11am-12pm

Wed 22nd-Thurs 23rd MayRailway station collecting at Havant, Fratton, Portsmouth & South-sea, Portsmouth Harbour. It has been suggested that we collect at what we believe to be the peak times: 7:30-9:30am & 4-7pm

Should these timings be inconvenient for you, please let me know. Likewise, if days are not convenient, we can be flexible with Ports-mouth North and Portsmouth Citadel. This was a new venture last year and, as the saying goes, `good things are worth being repeat-ed.’

I leave with you words of encouragement from the pen of songwrit-er Fanny Crosby:Rescue the perishing, duty demands it; strength for they labour the Lord will provide.Trevor Sivyer, Big Collection Coordinator.

Noah’s Ark Nursery

Hi from all at Noah’s Ark Nursery.

These past few months have been very exciting and busy for both the children and staff. At the beginning of February we took a visit to William Booth Training College with the staff so that they could see the purpose-built nursery the college has. This gave them an opportunity to ask questions and to gain a better understanding of the work The Salvation Army does.

We have also had our official opening where we were privileged to welcome Linvoy Primus to cut the ribbon. He said a few words about Faith and Football’s links with the Corps and now, in turn, with the nursery. Faith and Football have also very generously provided some of the items on our wish list!

The children have been very busy celebrating Pancake Day, Mothers’ Day, World Book Day and Red Nose Day to name but a few special events. They are currently working on a collage for Easter which we are hoping will be displayed in our Citadel.

Every week we seem to have added more children to our register and, after Easter, we are expecting even more children since we are being recommended for the 2 year funding.

After pausing for thought last month, with the previous Pope on his retirement, what a delight it was to be surprised about the

election of the new Pope, an Argentine from the great continent of South America. My wife and I spent the first 16 years of our overseas service in Argentina. At first we had to put up with being “persecuted” by the Catholic Church. One Easter we had a brick throne through our quarter’s window. In fury I chased the culprit for two blocks, but he got away. One day we had a knock at our front door. It was a priest in all his black austere robes, asking who was responsible for the poster on the side of our Hall? (I had neatly painted I thought, a simple Bible text in big block letters “God is love” ). When I came forward to the door that Anna had answered, he stretched out his hand and said: congratulations, just what we need to see in this city. He went on to say that since the election of the last Pope (I think it was John 23 in 1962, or was it 1963?) his attitude to Protestants had changed, he now recognized that we are all brothers and wanted to say so to someone like Anna and myself.Actually he invited us to his monastery for tea and we became quite good friends as we found out more about each other. How things have moved on since those days of long ago.Pope, Archbishop, Salvationists, we are all part of God’s family, theChurch, in this end times of world history. How much longer will itbe before the Lord comes to claim the church He calls “the bride ofChrist”?

“I am coming soon” Jesus says in virtually the last words of the Bible.KG
