About Cork

Cork is located in the South-West Region of Ireland and in the province of Munster. With a population of 300,000, it is the second largest city in the state and the third most populous on the Island. Cork City is a vibrant European cosmopolitan, modern and student friendly city. The city is also the principal commercial and banking centre in the South of Ireland. It is a busy, thriving seaport and home to a large number of modern industries.

Culture

Cork was the European Capital of Culture in 2005 and in 2009 was included in the Lonely Planet's top 10 "Best in Travel 2010". The guide described Cork as being "at the top of its game: sophisticated, vibrant and diverse" and it’s easy to see why. The activity of Cork's artists, musicians, writers, poets and players is evident on our streets, in our galleries and on our stages. In fact, CIT’s very own Cork School of Music and the Crawford College of Art and Design are at the heart of our city’s vibrant culture and artistic offerings. In the performing arts - music, drama, dance - you should check out the Cork Opera House in Emmet Place, the Everyman Palace in MacCurtain Street and the Granary Theatre on the Mardyke. The best known annual festivals on the city's calendar include the International Choral Festival in May, the Midsummer Festival in June, the Beamish Folk Festival in September, and, in October, both the Cork International Film Festival and the Guinness Jazz Festival. Cork also has an abundance of pubs, nightclubs and restaurants catering for cuisines from across the globe. Festivals: http://www.cork.ie/events/festivals/

Shopping

The retail trade in Cork city includes a mix of both modern, state of the art shopping centres and family owned local shops. Department stores cater for all budgets, with expensive boutiques for one end of the market and high street stores also available. Shopping centres can be found in the city centre as well as many of Cork's suburbs, including Blackpool, Ballincollig, Douglas, Ballyvolane, Wilton and Mahon.

Sporting Life Cork has a distinguished and well established tradition of sporting life, particularly in our traditional Gaelic games, hurling and football. This success is underpinned by the tremendous support from the Rebel fans. Soccer and rugby are also very well represented in Cork. As well as the more mainstream sports, Cork is also home to Cricket, Road Bowling, and even American Football. A more comprehensive list of sporting clubs for Cork can be found online at the Cork Guide: http://www.cork-guide.ie/sport.htm

Here in CIT, there are extensive playing fields and sports facilities available. These include outdoor pitches, a championship standard athletics track, tennis courts and a synthetic all-weather pitch. Indoor sports and training are accommodated in a large and well-equipped sports hall and gym, centrally located on campus.

About CIT

Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is recognised and respected as a progressive educational institution of international standing. Established in 1912, it has developed significantly over the years and has been recognised twice as the Sunday Times “Institute of Technology of the Year”. All of its programmes meet the requirements of the Irish National Framework of Qualifications and, thus, are fully recognised internationally. CIT has a total enrolment of approximately 14,000 students, of which approximately 50% are full-time. It has four principal campuses: Bishopstown Campus, Crawford College of Art & Design (CCAD), Cork School of Music (CSM) and the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI). Cork, one of Ireland’s major cities, is noted as a centre of entrepreneurship, business development and employment generation. Many international investors have established significant locations in Cork, resulting in the creation of specialist clusters in the life sciences, information technology, and agri-food sectors. Sixteen of the top twenty pharmaceutical companies in the world are now located in Ireland, with many of these in Cork e.g., Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson. In addition, Cork is the home of a vibrant information technology (IT) industry and is a significant location for EMC, IBM, VMware, and Apple amongst others. CIT is noted for the strength of its relationships with industry and the applied nature of its courses and research programmes. A key component of CIT’s work is servicing industry both through the supply of graduates and through research. It maintains relationships with several universities across the world with whom it exchanges students and staff. As a consequence, approximately 800 international students and researchers are registered on CIT’s research and educational programmes. Furthermore, CIT operates a vibrant innovation centre which acts as a launching pad for high potential start-up businesses that are fundamentally reliant upon research. These start-up businesses provide a constant stream of opportunities for graduates and researchers who wish to engage with new technologies and realise their entrepreneurial ambitions. CIT offers a safe and welcoming environment to international students in addition to providing excellent educational qualifications.

CIT Course Structures

CIT has designed its courses in a very flexible way in order to give you the option of graduating at different levels – Bachelor Degree, Honours Degree, Professional and Postgraduate. This “Ladder” enables you to progress through the system to qualifications appropriate to your personal requirements. Options at Entry

There are two main entry streams for full-time students

CIT offers many four year Honours Degrees. Students commit to the full four year programme from the start.

There are Bachelor Degree programmes of three years duration, most of which have the option to add on another year of study to gain an Honours Degree.

CIT’s Ladder of Progression

There are over fifty Honours Degree courses on offer at CIT. Most of these can be accessed from the Bachelor Degree level. Progression from a Bachelor Degree to an add-on Honours Degree normally requires a 50% average in the Bachelor Degree examination. In some cases other requirements may apply.

Postgraduate Studies

Every year, a growing number of graduates choose CIT as their preferred destination for postgraduate education. Whether pursuing a research or taught Masters or PhD, you can expect to work on solving complex problems in cutting edge research and innovation across a range of disciplines, with the support of expert staff that will guide and mentor you along your chosen career path. The strong, vibrant CIT research-academic community delivers opportunities for postgraduate studies in Engineering, Science, Computing, Business, Education, Humanities, Maritime, Art & Media, and Music.

Awards fall into the following categories:

• Postgraduate Diploma (Taught)

• Masters (Taught)

• Masters (by Research)

• Doctorate (PhD)

The Postgraduate Diploma often forms the taught element of a Masters (Taught) degree comprising 60 ECTS credits delivered over 2 semesters for full-time students. It can also be a stand-alone programme.

Page 13: CIT International Student Handbook 2014/2015

10

The Masters (Taught) programme involves a combination of lecture attendance, dissertation and course work. Programme duration for full-time students is normally one calendar year (three semesters), comprising 90 ECTS credits. Some of the progression and transfer opportunities include progression to doctoral degrees or to another Master degree.

The Masters (by Research) involves project work under the supervision of a highly qualified research leader and is examinable by thesis. The usual programme duration for full-time students is 21 months from the date of admission to the Masters Research Register.

The Doctoral (PhD) programme follows the same process as that of a research Masters but involves more advanced original research work. The minimum duration for a PhD is three academic years from the date of admission to the PhD register. There is also a facility to transfer from the Masters to the PhD register in most circumstances. Various models for doctoral degree programmes now exist, ranging from the traditional research doctorate to structured and professional doctoral programmes which have substantial taught components that are geared to meeting the needs of the contemporary employment market.

CIT boasts state-of-the-art buildings and laboratories with world-class facilities that enable postgraduate students to reach their full potential. CIT research staff and leaders have attracted funding for activities from industry and enterprise and through a wide range of National and European research schemes. This means that in areas of CIT research interest and expertise, financial support in the form of payment of fees and student scholarships may be available to successful Masters and PhD programme applicants.

Research Community

Research is a core dimension of CIT activity in collaboration with a wide range of organisations including Higher Education Institutions, Industry, State and Voluntary Bodies. CIT researchers are amongst the most successful in the country and work with a wide range of international collaborators. CIT’s research activities are structured to have a direct and meaningful impact on industry, whilst at the same time being grounded in research excellence. Research activity in CIT is primarily (though not exclusively) organised around four Institute Research Clusters which are large multi-disciplinary groups of researchers working on high-level research of strategic importance to the
