Whether for the thrill of high speed, the comfort, the scenery or the attractive prices, travelling by train is a unique experience. If you haven’t decided how to travel yet, we have put together 5 compelling reasons to choose the train on your next trip.

5 reasons to travel by train

1 City centre to city centreMost major train stations are located in the heart of the cities and benefit from excellent connections with other public transportations such as the underground, taxis, and buses. When travelling by train, you avoid transfers, endless queues at crowded airports or the stress of driving in a different country. Reach your destination fresh and relaxed.

2 ComfortWhether it is for long or short journeys, comfort is always appreciated. Onboard, you will find spacious carriages with large seats and space for luggage. You can easily walk in the train or socialise at the bar-buffet car. While 2nd class offers good value for money, 1st class can be very affordable, so don’t hesitate to upgrade!

3 Unique experienceFrom high speed trains offering an efficient and rapid connection between two cities to luxurious trains or panoramic trains offering spectacular scenery, a train ride can be a destination in itself. The train is also a very popular mode of transport. It’s an opportunity to meet the locals, learn more about their country and get tips on the best secret destinations.

4 Save moneyWhether you go for a Pass or a Point to Point ticket, you can always benefit from attractive prices. Tickets can be very affordable when booked in advance and Passes not only offer discounts but also give access to bonuses. Optimise your budget with night trains, saving on hotel costs.

5 Be greenThink about making that trip a little greener by travelling by train. Well-established high speed rail systems operate in a more environmentally friendly way than any other means of transport.

Choose from a wide range of trains including high speed day trains operating at 320 km/h, scenic trains offering incredible vistas or authentic hotels on wheels to enjoy the ease, comfort and freedom of train travel.

The onboard experience

For routes of over 6 hours, night trains are a smart travel option. Travelling while sleeping means you can optimise your time and save on hotel costs. Onboard personnel ensure safe and stress-free journeys. Night trains are available on many routes and offer different levels of comfort:

Night trains

Sleepers are private compartments for 1 to 3 travellers offering comfort, privacy and additional services. Breakfast is usually included in the price of the ticket.

Couchettes are compartments with 4 to 6 berths, ideal for groups of friends, families or for those who want to socialise with the locals.

Reclining seats are available in some overnight trains. This is the best option if you want to travel in basic comfort on a shoestring budget.

© E

uros

tar

Most day trains offer 1st and 2nd class accommodation. If you like to be pampered, upgrade to 1st class: enjoy the larger seats, generous legroom and on some routes, additional services such as a complimentary meal, free wireless connection and attentive staff. As opposed to air travel, 1st class prices for trains can be very affordable especially if you book in advance.

Day trains

High speed trains have revolutionised travel in Europe, making cities more accessible and bringing people closer. Enjoy the thrill of high speed, in great comfort, onboard the most popular high speed trains like TGV, Eurostar, Thalys, ICE, AVE, Frecciarossa and more.

Regional trains connect main cities to the beautiful and peaceful countryside. Choose from the large range of destinations and schedules.

Scenic trains run through spectacular areas, where nature is at its best. The most famous scenic trains in Europe operate in Switzerland. Ride the Glacier Express, the GoldenPass Line or the famous UNESCO World heritage listed Bernina Express to discover the Alps.

Good to know

When you select your Pass, you can usually choose between Continuous Passes, to travel every day during the validity of your Pass or Flexi Passes, to travel on the dates of your choice within a limited period of time. Flexible travel days may be used consecutively or non-consecutively, provided they are used within the validity of the Pass.

What are Continuous or Flexi Passes?

Are there discounts for Children, Youths or Seniors?

IMPORTANT: age limits vary according to the product or the country travelled so check the age limits before booking.

-  4 Children, usually between 4 and 11 years old, pay half the adult fare. Under 4 years of age, they travel for free unless a reservation for a separate seat/berth is required.

To qualify for a Youth discount of up to 50%, travellers must be aged between 12 and 25. With a few exceptions, Youth Passes are available in 2nd class and travellers can also benefit from good deals on the main Point to Point tickets.

Travellers aged 60 years and more are considered as Seniors and can also benefit from special discounts on some Passes and Point to Point tickets.

4/11Paper tickets or e-tickets?Paper: your Pass or Point to Point ticket is handed by your travel agent or sent to you by postal mail before you leave your country of residence. Your paper ticket has a monetary value.

E-ticket/Ticketless: your tickets can either be collected at the station or received by email:

Print @ the Station: a reference code is sent to you and you just need to collect your ticket(s) at a ticket vending machine before boarding the train. There is no risk of losing your tickets before travelling.

Print @ Home: your ticket is sent by email and must simply be printed on any printer before you take the train. Once printed, your rail ticket is valid to travel.

What are Saver, Twin, Party? When 2 people or more travel together with a Pass, they are entitled to a discount of around 15% off the regular price. Depending on the Pass, the rules and names vary: Saver (2 to 5 persons), Twin (2 persons) or Party (3 to 9 persons).
