COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an introduction to computer concepts and an overview of microcomputer applications including variations of

• Microsoft Windows (operating system), • Microsoft Office (productivity suite), • Microsoft Word (word processor; part of Office), • Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet processor; part of Office), • possibly Microsoft Access (database system; part of Office), and • Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation system; part of Office).

We will use Microsoft Office 2016 for this course. The course is compatible with

• Microsoft Windows 7 • Windows 8.1 • Windows 10 • Microsoft Office 365.

The first few chapters of the text explain computers, operating systems and use of the Internet.

There are 4 major applications in the course: Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

SOFTWARE

When you buy a PC Windows computer today for personal use, it will be pre-installed with the Windows 10 operating system. However, many companies or industries today are using the older Microsoft Windows 7 or 8.1. For information on Windows 10, see the book New Perspectives Microsoft Windows 10 by Ruffolo, ISBN 13-9781305579402.

Many commercial systems running on networks are using Microsoft Office 365. The text is designed to be compatible with Microsoft Office 365. For information on Office 365, see the Appendix at the end of the first text. Office 365 is sold by subscription and is guaranteed to provide the latest version of the Office programs (currently Office 2016). Office 365 is a set of software and files that is managed automatically by Microsoft in a cloud. The cloud is a group of computers used by Microsoft that the individual user cannot manipulate. The applications in Office 365 are upgraded automatically by Microsoft. While companies often subscribe to Office 365, you are likely to use Office 2016 directly under Windows 10 at home. You need not obtain Office 365.

Many computers in industry today use Microsoft Office 2013 or Office 2016. The differences between these versions of Office are minimal, and you can use either Office 2013 or 2016 to do the Projects in the course, although Office 2016 is strongly preferred. Some features in Office 2016 do not exist in Office 2013 (such as some colors and themes). In the assignments, you may use a reasonable substitute in Office 2013 for a feature that appears only in Office 2016.

Together with the books used for Readings, you will use the SAM (Skills Assessment Manager) web-based system for Training, Projects and Exams. You will obtain a combination of the textbooks and the SAM program. The tables below indicate the readings assigned from the books and the dates that assignments are available and due. Locate an Assignment using the Calendar Activity View or the Activity List View within SAM.

There are 4 types of assignments, which you access via SAM:

• Readings. These are Optional and Ungraded. Any part of the textbooks can be read at any time. We suggest that a Module of the book be read before the corresponding training, and that the steps discussed be done on a computer as you are reading.

• Training. These are Optional, but can be used to receive Extra Credit on your final exam grade, gain skills in Microsoft applications, and prepare for exams. Once a training assignment has been made available according to the SAM calendar, it remains available through Wednesday, January 23. The following table shows the training dates for each module.

• Exams. These are Mandatory and consist of two types of questions. One type asks you to simulate an application similar to the Training questions. The second type consists of multiple-choice questions. The answers to the multiple-choice questions are found in the textbook. Use the index of the textbook to look up the topic of the multiple-choice question and locate the answer.

The exams are given on 4 dates. On each date, you may choose to take the exam, either in the afternoon or in the evening. Use the password to take an exam during an individual session. You may not take both sessions on one particular date. You may not take parts of an exam in both sessions.

available to you at the exams. The grades on the exams will be available to you the day after each exam.

Generally, grades on training, projects and exams are available on the day after they are due, using the Results tab of SAM. Also available are reports describing the grading of the assignment requirements. Please check these as soon as possible and let me know if you have a substantive question on a Result. Do not wait until the end of the semester. Also a reminder to you to save any submitted assignment files so you can provide them to me in case of a question. Do not send me any screenshots.

Although you can use the Office 2013 programs, you must use the custom Office 2016 books. All assignments come from SAM, which is coordinated with the 2016 books. Below, we discuss how to install SAM.

You may use computers in the Brooklyn College Library, Library Café or in the West End Computer Lab (near Ocean Avenue) for this course. The West End Lab contains Microsoft Office 2016. You may also use your personal computer or, with permission of your employer, a computer at work.

Some older PC computers are still using the old Windows XP operating system and the old Office 2003 or Office 2007 or Office 2010 set of applications. You may NOT use those systems. You may use a Mac computer running Office 2016, but you may be penalized if you use a feature that differs from the PC version significantly. Some assignments indicate that they are not specified for Macs. You can use approximations of colors or themes specified in the assignment instructions if you do the assignment on a Mac.

To repeat: You may NOT use Office 2003 nor Office 2007 nor Office 2010 for this course, nor may you use Windows XP nor Windows Vista. On a Mac, you may not use any version of Office except Office 2016. Some features in projects are not available on a Mac. You may use Office 2013 on a PC to do Projects, although Office 2016 is preferred. Some features are not available using Office 2013.

A MAC cannot be used to submit projects or exams on Excel Chapter 5 or on any projects or exams in Access. Make sure to submit these on a PC.

Blackboard is NOT being used for this course. Submit any questions to [email protected]. I will communicate to you via email. Assignments may not be submitted via Cloud. photo, DropBox, OneDrive or ChatBox or similar file wrappers; only within SAM as Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, or as Access databases.

You must obtain the required custom textbook and access to SAM. When you order the textbook, you will automatically receive access to SAM. The book is sold in a loose-leaf format. Keep the pages of the entire book in their original order, within one or more loose-leaf binders, since you will need them for the open-book exams.

Disclaimer: The instructor has no financial interest in the textbooks nor in the SAM system. He does not receive any payment, commission or royalties from sales of the books or the SAM system.

When you register for this course, please send an email (containing Assignment 1) to [email protected]. Assignment 1 is due by January 4. It does not require use of SAM or information from the textbooks. One extra point is available each day that Assignment 1 is submitted early (up to 10 extra points) and one point is deducted for each day that Assignment 1 is late.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS (Repetition Of Earlier Statements)

Students may use their own computers at home or computers at the college (Library, Computer Café, Web Building) that contain Office 2013 or 2016. On campus, the best place to obtain all the features you need is in the WEB building computer laboratory (the WEB building is on the Ocean Avenue side of the campus, past the West Quad.)

Students must have access (on campus or off-campus) to:

• A PC using the Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 operating system or Office 365.

• Microsoft Office 2016 (or 2013) (including Microsoft Access; many computers with Office 2013 or 2016 do not include Access, so make sure the computer you use has Access 2016.)

• Email, and access to the World Wide Web. • A PC is preferred, but you can use a Mac, with reduced points

for Mac or Office 2013 features that are missing. You cannot use a MAC for the second Excel project or for Access and for the Word project.

ASSIGNMENTS The assignments are listed earlier in the this document and are accessed from SAM and submitted to SAM. The assignments are all in the SAM system (except for the first introductory Assignment 1), as noted in the tables above. They should all (except for Assignment 1 below) be submitted via SAM, not to me.

• It is essential that you submit Assignment 1 to me (not via SAM) as early as possible, or the Registrar will assign a grade of WN (an administrative withdrawal) to you for the course. The earlier you submit Assignment 1, the better. As soon as you register for the course, submit Assignment 1.

• Do not submit any assignments using email. photo, DropBox, OneDrive, ChatBox, Cloud, or any other file wrapper. Submit only Word files, Excel files, PowerPoint files or Access databases through the instructions given in SAM. Do NOT submit assignments to me—only through SAM. Keep a copy of anything you submit to SAM.)

• The assignments often need pre-existing data files. These can be downloaded from the SAM specification of the assignment.

GRADING:

● Projects (4 assignments) 30%

● Exams (3 Exams) 30%

● Final Exam 40%

Your final grades may be curved based on performance of the entire class.

• All regular assignments are due by the date listed above in the Assignment Schedules.

• 2-3 points will be deducted for every calendar date that an assignment is late and no assignment will be accepted past a specified days after the due date.

• One point Extra Credit on the Final Exam for doing each optional training assignment (15 training assignments are available during the semester).

HOW TO CONTACT ME

Students may contact me in person during office hours, or via email ([email protected]) at any time. The subject of your email must contain the following:

CIS 1050, your name, Assignment number or subject

Make sure your subject line is correct; if not, points may be removed from the current assignment and you may not receive a reply. Do not use any quotes or special characters in the subject line, they are often misinterpreted when the file is sent by email. If you have any questions, please feel free to see me during my scheduled office hours or at any other time that I am available. If you need to communicate with me, the ONLY guaranteed way to reach me is by email.

Examination Policy

Subject and final examinations will be given by SAM online. The dates and times for these four exams are given in the calendar above.

• You must take the exams online on Jan. 8 (WORD), Jan.16 (EXCEL) and Jan. 18 (ACCESS), and the Final Exam on January 23, (EXCEL, ACCESS, POWERPOINT),

• You may take the exam at 12-3PM or at 6-9PM, using the password “Afternoon” or “Evening”.

• The Final Exam will include a significant number of PowerPoint questions.

• Check your schedule NOW to determine that you can take the exams and final online through SAM at the designated times. Re-arrange your schedule if necessary. If you cannot make the exams or final, you must drop the course.

The examinations will be open-textbook. You may consult copies of the text during the exam. During the exam periods, the rest of SAM will be unavailable. You may also consult other software or electronic sites.

No make-up exams are allowed. If you are taking more than one regular or online class, your exams and/or finals may conflict. It is your responsibility to resolve this conflict within the first week of the semester, or else you must drop the course. Makeup final exams (in cases of emergency only) will only be given in Spring 2018 before the deadline for grade changes.

To prepare for examinations, read the chapters (Modules) in the text and do the training assignments in SAM. All of the questions come directly from the reading material and from the training assignments. Review the examples in each section and short exercises after each section of the training applications on which you are being tested.

The examinations consist of simulated Office 2016 actions and multiple choice questions. Your grade on an exam or project will be available in SAM the day after the exam or the due date for a project.

All submissions must be completed by January 23.

In reading the SAM Student Manual, note that Brooklyn College is a key-code institution, not a site-licensed institution.

STUDY AND ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE

Although this course does not have formal meetings, you should expect to invest sufficient time to both learn the material and do the assignments. Students should prepare to spend at least 20 hours weekly on this material. If you do not have enough time, do not take the course. Do not kid yourself!

Each of the major areas of study (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) are covered by two or more "Modules" in the textbook. Each Module is designed to be read while sitting in front of the computer. By following along with the Module project, you will learn many features of the application. After reading the chapter and completing the Modules along with the book, you are to do the assignment listed in the schedule below. You do not have to submit the Modules themselves.

You are expected to read the assigned pages in the book and do the Modules in the text in front of a computer before attempting the assignment. If you do not do the Modules as you read the book, you will learn very little. The first table above lists the readings.

Plan to spend significant time each week working on assignments.

Each assignment is specified in SAM. Any assignment received after midnight of its due date will be penalized for each day after the due date. However, no assignment will be accepted later than several days after the due date or after January 23, whichever is earlier.

Make sure your name and homework number appear in the subject line of any communication to me via email ([email protected]) in the format given above. Often the subject line is garbled in transmission. Do not use a special character, like a quote or a hyphen, in your subject line. Make sure your name appears in every submission via SAM.

Submit all assignments (except Assignment 1) via SAM. Do not send them to me.

You MUST keep a copy of every assignment you submit. If an assignment is misfiled or misdirected, I may ask you to forward me the original assignment submission.

COURSE POLICIES

Student Conduct Any acts of disruption that go beyond the normal rights of students to question and discuss with instructors the subject content will not be tolerated, in accordance with the Academic Code of Conduct described in the Student Handbook.

Electronic Devices Policy Cellular telephones, pagers, CD or DVD players, radios, and similar devices are prohibited during examinations, unless specified. Please note that the exams are open-book, but only the hardcopy book or a copy is allowed in the room. If you have an online copy of the book, you cannot use it during the final with an electronic device. Print out those sections of the book you think you might need, and bring the printout to the exam. It is strongly advised that you purchase or rent a hard copy of the text.

Incomplete Policy

Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound, documented reason for omitting submission of material. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing and must have completed a significant portion of the course. Students absent from the final will receive an INC grade if they receive permission in advance, or in cases of emergency only. Otherwise, the grade will be F. A makeup final or completion of work in the case of an INC grade is only allowable up to a specified date in the following semester.

Cheating Policy

Students are expected to uphold the school’s standard of conduct relating to academic honesty. Students assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. The guiding principle of academic integrity shall be that a student's submitted work, examinations, reports, and projects must be the student's own. Students shall be guilty of violating the college’s policy if they:

1. Represent the work of others as their own. 2. Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic work. 3. Give unauthorized assistance to other students.

4. Modify, without instructor approval, an examination, paper, record, or report for the purpose of obtaining additional credit.

5. Misrepresent the content of submitted work. Students may study together but may not work together on a specific assignment.

Any student violating the college’s academic integrity policy is subject to receive a failing grade for the course and will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs. If a student is unclear about whether a particular situation may constitute violation, the student should meet with the instructor to discuss the situation.

For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not "work together" on graded assignments. Such collaboration constitutes cheating. A student may not use or copy (by any means) another's work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own. If you need help on an assignment, contact your instructor, not other classmates.

DISABILITIES POLICY

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), qualified students enrolled in this course are entitled to “reasonable accommodations.” Please contact the College Disabilities Office to see if you are entitled to an accommodation. The instructor is not

Brooklyn College Policy on Academic Integrity

The faculty and administration of Brooklyn College support an environment free from cheating and plagiarism. Each student is responsible for being aware of what constitutes cheating and plagiarism and for avoiding both.

The complete text of the CUNY Academic Integrity Policy and the Brooklyn College procedure for implementing that policy can be found at this site: http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/bc/policies.

If a faculty member suspects a violation of academic integrity and, upon investigation, confirms that violation, or if the student admits the violation, the faculty member MUST report the violation.

This means that if you cheat on a test or an assignment, I must file a report which may initiate academic penalties.
