• A computer network consists of two or more computers intended to share resources.

• In the world of computers, networking is the practice of linking two or more computing devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software.

NetworkNetwork

• The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. According to Internet World Stats, as of December 31, 2011 there was an estimated 2,267,233,742 Internet users worldwide. This represents 32.7% of the world's population.

Business Value of InternetBusiness Value of Internet

• An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise

• This is a network that is not available to the world outside of the Intranet.

• For example, consider an office with a few PCs and a few printers all networked together. The network would not be connected to the outside world. On one of the PCs there would be a directory of web pages that comprise the Intranet. Other PCs on the network could access this Intranet by pointing their browser to this directory

• Many companies have sophisticated and widespread intranets, offering…– Detailed data retrieval– Collaboration– Personalized customer profiles– Links to the Internet

• Intranets uses Internet technologies– Web browsers and servers– TCP/IP network protocols

– HTML publishing and databases

Intranet as Information

Portals

• An Extranet is actually an Intranet that is accessible to authorised outsiders. The actual server (the computer that serves up the web pages) will reside behind a firewall. The firewall helps to control access between the Intranet and Internet permitting access to the Intranet only to people who are suitably authorised.

• Web browser technology makes customer and supplier access to intranets easier and faster

• Another way to build and strengthen strategic relationships

• Enables and improves collaboration between a business, customers, and partners

• Facilitates online, interactive product development and marketing

• Wide Area Network

• Local Area Network

• Virtual Private Network

Types of Communications Types of Communications NetworkNetwork

• a peer-to-peer (P2P) network is created when two or more PCs are connected and share resources without going through a separate server computer

Peer-to-Peer NetworkPeer-to-Peer Network

• A computer network is referred to as client/server if (at least) one of the computers is used to "serve" other computers referred to as "clients". Besides the computers, other types of devices can be part of the network.

Client/Server NetworkClient/Server Network

• A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that is confined to a relatively small area. It is generally limited to a geographic area such as a lab, school, or building.

Local Area NetworkLocal Area Network

• Telecommunications Network that covers a large geographic area

Wide Area Network (WAN)Wide Area Network (WAN)

• A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet.

• It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while benefitting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network
