CIS curriculum overview

Cambridge learnersUsing the Cambridge approach helps to develop learners who are:• confident in working with

information and ideas, their own and those of others

• responsible for themselves, responsive and respectful of others

• reflective as learners themselves, developing their ability to learn

• innovative and equipped for new and future challenges

• engaged intellectually and socially, and ready to make a difference in the world.

Early Years Foundation StageEYFS is based on the British National Curriculum. There are seven areas of learning and development. All areas are important and inter-connected and are crucial for

igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, as well as building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The seven areas are:Communication, language and literacyPhysical developmentPersonal, Social and Emotional developmentEnglish as a Second Language Problem solving, reasoning and numeracyKnowledge and understanding of the worldCreative development

Primary School YearsCIE provides a framework for the key subjects of English (or English as a Second Language), Mathematics, Science and ICT Starters. Other subjects are based upon the British National Curriculum. They include Art, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, and Personal and Social Education. Spanish is taught from Year 3.

The Cambridge and British National Curriculum programmes provide statements of content, knowledge, skills and understanding, and attainment target levels for all the subjects we teach. There is a huge range of resources available to assist teachers and the school purchases teaching materials particularly from the UK.

CIS Primary is licensed and accredited by the Russian Ministry of Education to offer the Primary Russian State Curriculum. For Russian native speakers, Russian language is taught from Year 1. Optional Russian State Curriculum core subjects are provided from Year 3. For non-native speakers, extra ESL lessons are arranged.

However, academic subjects are only half of the story. Where we excel is in putting the child and his or her needs and situation first. Not only do we recognise that each child is an individual, but also that every day is different and each day provides another opportunity for success and happiness.

Secondary School YearsCIS Lower Secondary

CIS Lower Secondary years are characterised by an increasingly focused approach with specialist teachers for all subjects. This ensures that not only are students developing their knowledge and skills but that they are also prepared for the rigours of the examination courses which begin with the Cambridge IGCSE from Year 10.

CIS Upper Secondary (IGCSE)IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a two year programme leading to externally set, marked and certificated examinations from the Cambridge International Examinations. It is a unique UK government endorsed programme provided to thousands of schools around the world.

Our students are offered a curriculum across Years 10 and 11 that includes around 7 IGCSE examination subjects. These encompasses the core ones of English Language, Mathematics , Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Three or four other subjects may be taken from Geography, History, Spanish, Russian, Business Studies and ICT (Information and Communication Technology), and a self-study first language is also possible. Exactly what is available in a particular year will depend upon a number of factors. What is ensured is suitability for our students and the key curriculum factors of breadth and balance. Depth and quality goes without saying with all Cambridge courses.

CIS Advanced level (AS & A Level)The final two years of schooling are dedicated to the Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced

Level examination courses of the Cambridge International Examnations. Recognised around the world for university entrance they offer students the flexibility of a completely free choice of subjects. Therefore a student could specialise in the sciences, the arts or languages, or take a broad range of subjects from across different disciplines. As well as these high-level examination courses, CIS is also able to support students with different aspirations.

A Level examinations are usually taken after 13 years of education and are based on approximately 360 hours of guided learning per subject, normally over a two year period. A Levels are highly specialised and a student will normally take three subjects, although exceptional students may occasionally take four or five.

At CIS we aim to provide a curriculum with learning opportunities that recognise and celebrate each child’s individual uniqueness, develop their full potential and prepare them to meet new challenges.

CIS Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides an environment that is happy, warm, secure and stimulating. Through EYFS curriculum we enable children to develop a strong sense of self whilst also learning to play, negotiate and co-operate with others. www.cisrussia.ru8 | page

CIS Early Years Foundation Stage  Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides an environment that is happy, warm, secure and stimulating. Through the EYFS curriculum we enable children to develop a strong sense of self whilst also learning to play, negotiate and co-operate with others.

Children aged 2-5 are constantly encountering new experiences and seeking to understand them in order to extend their skills, develop their confidence and build on what they already know. They learn in different ways. EYFS curriculum offers a wide range of experiences for all children and allows them to deepen their understanding by playing, talking, observing, planning, questioning, experimenting, testing, repeating, reflecting and responding to adults and each other.

The EYFS curriculum is aimed at supporting, fostering, promoting and developing children’s:

Communication, language and literacyChildren are given opportunities to experience a rich language environment, to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves, and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Physical developmentYoung children are provided with opportunities to be active and interactive, and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children are also helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

Personal, Social and Emotional developmentChildren develop a positive sense of themselves and others, form positive relationships and develop respect for others, develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings, understand appropriate behaviour in groups and have confidence in their own abilities.

English as a Second Language Strong skills in the first language act as a bridge both for language development and for development of a second language.

Speaking and listening to English all day is exhausting so when children

use their first language with each other this is not discouraged.

The teachers aim to create an environment where each child feels confident and comfortable taking risks with language and interacting with others.

Children are exposed to all aspects of the English language through visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities including songs, games, stories, and individual play group and class time.

Problem solving, reasoning and numeracyThis helps children develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space through number songs, poems, games and group activities, allowing them to practice, enjoy and talk about them.

Knowledge and understanding of the worldThis allows children to explore the world around them, to find out about their environment, to learn about people and places that are significant to them, to investigate, experiment, predict, plan and question, sharing their discoveries with others.

Creative developmentThis allows children to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through creativity in art, music, dance, imaginative play and design and technology.

Early years foundation stage profileDuring Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception your child will have personal folder created for them by their teachers. This folder is called a profile and is used to create a picture of your child’s progress throughout his/her year.

The EYFS profile contains:• photographic evidence from

independent play • incidental observations

recording children free-choice actions and knowledge

• timed observation on specific areas of learning

• examples from work during focused lessons

• examples of responses from children to structured questions

CIS Primary  Year 1 - 6

In our Primary School we use the Cambridge Primary curriculum for the core subjects of English/English as a Second Language, Mathematics , Science and ICT Primary Starters. The British National Curriculum (with suitable adaptations to reflect our international nature) is the foundation for other subjects such as Geography, History, Music, Art and Design, Physical Education, Spanish, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education). CIS also provides optional access to core subjects of Russian State Curriculum.

The Cambridge Primary programme provides subject content, planning and resource guides, guidance for curriculum implementation and development, plus support for classroom teaching and student learning. AS it is a programme which has been developed with consistent standards externally benchmarked across thousands of students, it enables reliable structured reporting to parents about the performance of their children, which has validity

beyond our school.

CIE provides two types of test for use at the end of a stage (school Year) and at the end of the primary programme (end of Year 6): Cambridge Primary Progression Tests and Cambridge Primary Checkpoint.

Cambridge Progression Tests are available for English, Mathematics and Science for Years 3 to 6. They are used internationally and are marked at school using full mark schemes and marking guidance

provided by CIE. The results of the test are just for school use or reporting to parents.

Cambridge Primary Checkpoint is a diagnostic assessment tool for the end of the Cambridge Primary programme in English, Mathematics and Science (end of Year 6). Students have to be entered for the tests and the question papers are issued from and returned to CIE for marking. Analysis and certificates are sent to the school by CIE after about two months.

CIS Lower Secondary  Year 7 - 9

Lower Secondary (known as Key Stage 3 in the UK) or Cambridge Secondary 1 uses the framework from CIE targeted at secondary age students. It is followed by the Cambridge IGCSEs from Year 10.

The Cambridge Secondary 1 curriculum only covers the subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. It consists of subject content, planning and resource guides, guidance for curriculum implementation and development, and support for classroom teaching and student learning. As a programme developed with consistent standards that are externally benchmarked across thousands of students, it enables reliable structured reporting to parents about the performance of their children, which has validity beyond the school. It also enables the school to ensure that students

are properly prepared for the demands of the IGCSE courses in these subjects.

CIE also provides two types of tests for use during Secondary 1; at the end of a stage (school year) and at the end of the programme (end of Year 9): Cambridge Secondary 1 Progression Tests and Cambridge Checkpoint.

Cambridge Secondary 1 has its roots in the British National Curriculum. Each subject area has a separate curriculum framework presenting the learning objectives for each stage of Cambridge Secondary 1. This is designed specifically for an international audience. It provides a clear structure for planning each stage as well as a description of the expectations for learners as they progress through the stages of

CIS Upper Secondary (IGCSE)  Year 10 and 11

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a two year course designed for 14 to 16 year olds. IGCSEs are known for developing vital educational knowledge, understanding and skills. They are established qualifications that keep pace with educational developments and trends and so are an ideal foundation for higher level courses such as AS and A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Recognised throughout the world, by academic institutes and employers, they are a mark of quality and evidence of real ability. Students typically sit seven to nine subjects in one session at the end of Year 11.

Our students are offered around 7 Cambridge IGCSE examination subjects. These include the core ones of English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Three or four other subjects might be taken from Geography, History, Spanish, Russian, Business Studies, ICT (Information and Communication Technology), Additional Mathematics and perhaps a self-study first language. Exactly what is available in a particular year will depend upon a number of factors. What is ensured is suitability for our students and the

key curriculum factors of breadth and balance.

IGCSE is taken in over 100 countries by an annual candidate entry of more than 250,000. Grade C in IGCSE English (either First Language or Additional Language) satisfies the English proficiency requirements of many universities in the UK and other Anglophone countries.

History of IGCSEIn England, beginning in 1951, a two-tier examination system was established, originally as GCE at Ordinary Level (O Levels for 16

year olds) and Advanced Level (A Levels for 18 year olds). In 1988, O Levels were replaced by the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education). At the same time, Cambridge agreed to make special provision for the growing number of international schools that were being established throughout the world in order to cater for children of diplomats and the increasingly mobile workforce of international corporations. This was based on the GCSE and named the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), the courses we offer today.

AS & A Level is the ‘gold standard’ of Cambridge qualifications. It is accepted as an entry qualification by universities of the European Union and elsewhere around the world.

www.cisrussia.ru24 | page

CIS Advanced (AS & A level)  Year 12 and 13

A Level examinations are usually taken after 13 years of education and are based on approximately 360 hours of guided learning per subject, normally over a two year period. A Levels are highly specialised and a student will normally take three subjects, although exceptional students will occasionally take four or five.

Cambridge International A Levels are taken throughout the world, sometimes as the national examinations of certain countries (such as Singapore and Mauritius), sometimes within international schools and sometimes in bi-lingual government schools alongside national exams.

There are six passing grades (A* – E). Typical UK university entrance requirements are above three passes at grade C for academic courses in established universities. Very popular courses will often require higher grades.

For example, medical schools in the UK often require grades of AAB and the highly selective universities of Cambridge and Oxford ask for at least AAA. Good A Level grades can also be a key to admission for all the world’s major universities. University course credit and advanced standing is often available in countries such as the USA and Canada, where

entrance to university takes place after 12 years of education. Good grades in carefully chosen A Level subjects can result in up to one full year of credit.

An AS/A Level Recognition Search is available from the CIE website at www.recognition.cie.org.uk. There you will find up-to-date information on universities that recognise Cambridge International AS and A Levels for entry to undergraduate programmes. It also includes details of advanced credit offered.

The subject content of each of the A Level syllabuses has been subdivided into two parts: the AS syllabus content which is expected to be covered in the first half of the course, and part two of the syllabus which is commonly referred to as ‘A2’. This flexible approach enables students to choose from three options:

Taking all A Level components in

the same examination session at the end of a course of study, usually at the end of the second year (Year 13)

Following a staged assessment to an A Level by taking the AS qualification in one examination session, and the A2 assessment in a subsequent session.
