Control of water pollution from construction sites
Environmental issues arise throughout any construction project and are increasing as legislation gets tighter and construction sites become more challenging to meet the changing needs of development, transport and energy generation. People working in construction have to be aware of their environmental obligations and the benefits that good practice will bring at every stage from the initial feasibility studies to design, construction planning and actual works. Mismanagement of water on construction sites can lead not only to environmental damage but to serious legal and economic consequences.
Target audienceEnvironmental managers, site managers, environmental regulators and
construction companies who are seeking ISO 14001 accreditation.

Lean in construction
The construction process needs to undergo a radical transformation to deliver client value and a low-carbon built environment. In short, delivering more for less while becoming more profitable.
Lean has been applied successfully in a range of sectors, including construction. Some parts of the industry frequently claim savings of 20–30 per cent or more. However, it is also widely agreed that Lean is not as widely practiced as it could be. This training should help you unlock the opportunities for Lean construction in your organisation and projects.
Target audience This one day course will be ideal for senior managers wanting to
understand Lean in construction or individuals who wish to understand

SABs facilitation workshop for Local Authorities
The Flood and Water Management Act introduces a range of responsibilities for Local Authorities around sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). In the future Lead Local Flood Authorities (Unitary and County Councils) will be responsible for SuDS Approval Bodies (SABs) that will evaluate and approve SuDS in all new developments and to adopt and maintain SuDS serving more than one property. Following future consultation the commencement of this part of the Flood and Water Management Act will introduce new opportunities and challenges for local authorities. There is now a need to develop the understanding, skills, processes and capacity within local authorities to ensure they are able to effectively resource and deliver these new requirements, while minimising future maintenance risks and delivering the best schemes possible for the local area.
Target audienceLead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs) responsible for setting up SABs
and other stakeholder organisations including district authorities, the
Environment Agency, water companies, developers. The day should be
led by the LLFA, but they should endeavour to engage with as many local
stakeholders as possible.
Benefits of facilitationThe offer combines the practical experience of the facilitators and CIRIA’s
unique expertise in developing guidance and support for government,
industry and Local Authorities in the delivery of SuDS, including the
insights they have gained through developing good practice and supporting
government in the development of the National Standards.
This includes:n providing tailored advice based on practical experience of SuDS
planning, design, construction and operationn evaluating and negotiating SuDS proposals through the planning
processn developing local SuDS guidance for planners and developersn delivering training for Local Authorities staff on the technical aspects of
SuDS

n maximising amenity and biodiversity benefits from SuDSn advising on adoption and maintenance of SuDS
Course overviewThe facilitation day will provide an overview of SuDS and the new
legislation, with detailed interactive sessions exploring how the key
requirements of the Act can be implemented within a specific Local
Authority area.
The process engages a range of relevant officers and stakeholders from
different services within county, district and unitary authorities and from
other stakeholder organisations to develop a shared understanding of
the implications of the new legislation and to begin scoping how the LLFA
might set up its SAB and the associated policies and processes.
This includes a particular focus on how the evaluation and approval
function might be delivered in coordination with existing planning
processes and how adoption and maintenance processes, which minimise
liabilities for Local Authorities, might be established.
Format of the dayThe format of the day can be tailored to specific requirements and the
facilitators are comfortable to accommodate any requirements on the day.
Presentations, facilitated discussions and group exercises will be structured
around these main topics:
n overview and introduction to SuDS key requirements of the Flood and
Water Management Actn evaluating and approving SuDS applicationsn adoption and maintenance
Participants will be provided with a report summarising the outcomes
of the day, including a draft action plan for taking implementation of the
Act forward in a co-ordinated way, with options for further support in
delivering this.

SuDS Foundation course delivered to Neath Port Talbot CBC
Environmental good practice on site course delivered to The Coal Authority
The organisationAs part of the Environment Directorate at Neath Port Talbot CBC,
the Highway Development Control Section deals with highway and
land drainage matters regarding planning applications.
The needWith the new Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and in particular
the set up of the new SuDS approval bodies (SABs) and use of SuDS
becoming mandatory in highway schemes, it was felt that a greater
understanding of the comprehensive approach to sustainable urban
drainage was required. This was especially so as staff had little or no
knowledge of the use of SuDS within a development framework.
The organisationThe Coal Authority works to protect the public and the environment
in coal mining areas. They manage the effects of past coal mining to
promote public safety and safeguard the landscape – now and for
future generations. The Coal Authority owns, on behalf of the country,
the vast majority of the coal in Great Britain, as well as former coal
mines. Established by Parliament in 1994, they have specific statutory
responsibilities associated with:
n licensing coal mining operations in Britainn handling subsidence damage claims that are not the responsibility
of licensed coalmine operatorsn dealing with property and historic liability issues, such as treatment
of mine water dischargesn providing public access to information on past and present coal
mining operationsn providing a 24 hour call-out service for reported surface hazards.
Case studies
The solutionThe CIRIA course delivered an easy to understand approach that
allowed staff to see that the use of SuDS was not only to control the flow
of water but also to improve its quality. The presentation and interaction
throughout the day gave a relaxed attitude and provided staff with the
basic understanding of how SuDS should be approached from the first
principles. Staff enjoyed the course and have learnt much even in the
short period of time.
The needThe training was undertaken in-line with the requirements of their
environmental management system. Their employees manage contractors
undertaking works on behalf of the Coal Authority where there are
significant environmental risks. This could be, for example, building mine
water treatment schemes or undertaking remedial work following a
subsidence claim. The objective was to train the employees who manage
these contractors on what the environmental issues are and how they
must be dealt with.
The solutionThe training provided by CIRIA improved their knowledge by teaching
them what the environmental issues are on construction sites and how
to manage them. The CIRIA course met the objectives and was very well
received.
