BILLY BARTONPAT & GWEN DAVISON, globetrotting with theGlobetrotters, said they were "on the verge of starva-tion" in France. Restaurants were open for only a lim-ited time each day and their hours conflicted with theglobetrotter's schedule. Eventually one of the "trot-ters" discovered a "sould food" cafe which was openall night and Pat and Gwen, having grown tired ofcheese three times a day; declared that nothing evertasted "so good" as "red beans and rice, corn-on-the-cob, 8BQ ribs and cornbread" - smack-dab in the mid-dle of Gay Paree.

Speaking of globetrotting, composer BARBARA TAG-GART went "west" to visit the Wenatchee Youth Cir-cus, was pleasantly surprised at the polished perform-ance which included a high wire and fling act. 85 per-formers travel in Greyhound buses, of whom 24 playin the band. This is the 25th year for the show. Their26th will find the troupe touring Australia.

Newlyweds ANITA (Keppo) and TOM Dtsimini areresiding in San Rafael (Calif) where they have a spa-cious apartment, a kitten, and Tom is a waiter in avery popular San Francisco restaurant called "Perrys".Anita is playing club dates and recently appeared inthe plush Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill. Anita writesthat sister I RIS, now with American Cont'l, has beena frequent visitor and that, al though she lacks circus-pals, Anita still hobnobs with a Show Biz crowd.

No FriendsIn his Aug. 22nd column, Jack Anderson, ofWashington,DC, reported the endangered spe-cie animals have no friends in the Interior Dept.According to Anderson the Interior Dept.'s topofficial • Robert Herbst - is giving in to demandsof the hunting lobby. If restrictions are lifted,he said, we'll be seeing more and more animalskin coats and other items sought by the chicclothes designers. The thing that really bothers Anderson is thefact that Herbst has appointed two hunters as

. U. S. representatives to an international con-ference which will decide the future of the en-dangered species. Herbst insists that the hunt-ers should have a right to be heard. "I just sawit as the fair thing to do."Anderson also charges that Herbst allegedlyauthorized the slaughter of endangered timberwolves while he served as Minnesota's top en-vironmental official. According to Anderson,Herbst misled the Senate when he testified athis confirmation hearings that he tried to changethe wolfs status from "endangered" to "threat-ened". In a letter, Anderson says, Herbst re-quested that Minnesota wolves be removed fromall federal protection. The hunters, however, were so impressed with Herbst's previous per-formance that they enthusiastically supportedhim at his Senate confirmation hearing.

Show NotesThe TNT & Royal Olympic Circus played tocapacity crowds at the Southwick Mall in To-ledo, Ohio, Aug. 24-28. I visited the show onthe 26th and witnessed the most beautiful set-ting one could ever imagine for an indoor show, which sets under a glass dome on an island oraqu-amphitheatre, completely surrounded bywater and fountains. The ring curb was red andwhite, with red ringmats with a white star. The8'x8' bandstand was red, white and yellow.

The program included: Overture, followed bythe introduction of ringmaster Earl Tegge; theRaija Duo, bicycle balancing on revolving ped-estal; Twinkles, the clown with soda tray gag;Dick Franco, juggler; Book Pitch by Twinkles;Maryse Begary, single trapeze.

The Aug. 15th "Mailbag" column needsto be answered, particularly the passagewhere they used the line "... the per-formers are not full-time professionalswith nothing else to do."Their main premise, that a June 13threview was unfair might well be true.We didn't see the show, so can't judge. However, in answer to them or anyoneelse who would justify sloppy perform-ance or "roughly executed tricks" withthe term "amateur" it should be notedthat the only difference between an amateur and a professional is that the pro-fessional gets paid. A professional mayhave an edge over most amateurs in styleand showmanship, derived from years ofexperience, but in the areas of develop-ment of technique and building propsand rigging the amateur has all the advan-tages.The idea that a professional has "noth-ing else to do" is patently ridiculous. Infact nothing could be further from thetruth.Anyrone who has ever tried to build anact, or even develop new tricks and rou-tines on the road knows how difficult itis. And building new props while travel-ing is almost impossible. Two years ago we spent some time witha high act who was trying to build a newrigging while on the road. Between play-ing engagements and working on the newequipment they averaged about threehours of sleep per night. Trying to lo-cate sources of materials in differentparts of the country was just one of theobstacles they encountered. In addition to maintaining vechicles andcoping with the dozen or so daily crisesconcommittant with a nomadic life, afull-time performer has the added re-sponsibility of constant correspondencewith agents and producers, plus the crea-tion and distribution of publicity mater-ial, a full-time job in itself.

THE CIRCUS REPORT is published eachweek by Don Marcks, 525 Oak Street, ElCerrito, Calif. 94530. The main requirement for the develop-ment of new tricks is the opportunityfor regular practice, something the pro-fessional can rarely plan on while outplaying dates. A few years ago we addeda new finish trick to our cycle act. Ittook nearly a year and a half to get itready. If we had been in one place, evenworking a full-time day job, it couldhave been polished inside of threemonths. And we know whereof we speak. When we first put our act together, inthe early sixties, we took nearly twoyears off the road. Believe me, it's lotseasier.Regular practice is the only way to de-velop and improve technique, and that'sa luxury the part-time acts have themost of.

HSUS ReportInspectors for the USDA administer the AnimalWelfare Act regulations as though it were writ-ten for the protection of exhibitors and trainers, according to the Humane Society of the U. S.In its Aug. 1977 issue of "Close-Up Report"the HSUS charges the Animal Welfare Act isbeing ignored.

The entire publication is devoted to the HSUSaction against circuses during the past year.Shows mentioned include Carson & Barnes,Fisher Bros., the Hanneford Circus and theGeorge Matthews Great London Circus."HSUS believes special regulations aimed spe-cifically at circus animals need to be developedby the USDA and the Dept, of the Interior. Ap-parently, Interior has decided not to adminis-ter laws affecting endangered species whenthose animals are traveling with circuses eventhough they are charged by Congress with reg-ulating all activities relating to endangered ani-mals. Interior leaves all regulatory and enforce-

ment activities relating to circuses up to theUSDA."

The small circuses are the worst offenders, ac-cording to the HSUS. "The customers of thesmall circus are truly the 'suckers' P. T. Bar-

! num talked about. By paying to see the animalI shows and exhibits, the customer is unknow-

ingly helping to perpetuate this form of animalcruelty."

fn a recent address HSUS President John A.Hoyt said, "We need everyone's help in this sit-uation. Urge local authorities to check the cir-cus when it comes to your town. Pay carefulattention to how the animals are housed andcared for. Encourage animal welfare groups tosign complaints. The traveling circus must beforced to end their cruel treatment of animals."Sue Pressman, whose regular HSUS assignmentis to keep tabs on animals in entertainment, says "We are determined to show these fly-by-night exhibitors and trainers that they mustobey the dictates of the federal Animal Wel-fare Act. We are going to uncover the sideshowshams and three ring abuses."
