This is done by checking the spine labels, the spines, and sometimes the front covers toalphabetize by author's last name and title in the fiction section and to put in numerical order byDewey Decimal number, author and title in the non-fiction section.

Shelf reading includes dusting and straightening books to the front of the shelves. Also, periodically remove the entire shelf to damp wash it and dust off the tops of the books with aclean paintbrush.

    Procedure

    1. Volunteer aides shelf read their assigned sections each day they work. If sections are longshelf read at least twice a month = half one week and half the next.

    2. See schedule posted on the bulletin board to know your area of responsibility (changesquarterly). Make sure that you take turns with your co-volunteer in shelf reading on yourassigned day. Dont make one person responsible for shelf reading every time.

    3. Shelf reading is much like shelving except that you are reading continuously down the rowinstead of only one or two books.

    4. Look first at the spine labels for location codes inG = Elementary OS = OversizeATL = Atlas P = ProfessionalIT = Information Technology R = ReferenceML = Multilingual IGL = Illustrated Graphic Literature

    * Every spine label in the elementary section should have a G on the call number.* Make sure that you have taken the book to the right section:

    - Reference books have an R on the spine label.-

Fiction books have a Fic on the spine label. (Some that were gifts might have SF orM orJ on the spine)- Professional books have a P on the spine label.- Easy books have an E beneath the G (make sure that there is no number beneath the

E those books belong in the non-fiction section.* Check to make sure the books are in the right section.
