From circuit topology to behavioral model of power amplifier dedicated to

radar applications

Background

In the recent years, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars are

gaining more importance in military radar systems. However, the AESA

radars are two times more expensive than the older generation radars. To

make products that are cost effective, accurate simulations of the radar are

very important. So far the old simulations cannot accurately predict the

outcomes because they cannot take into account of certain specifications for

each radar system. This paper presents the “Grey Box Model” which is an

improved simulation system that can accurately predict the behavioral

models of modern radars.

Method

The researchers build a system that includes both passive and active

elements as parameters into the model, which means there are linear and

non-linear sub-models. These models are then complied together into a

larger behavioral model.

Results

The system was used in Agilent Advanced Design System, and the data files

coming out successfully describe the relations between the input

parameters and the model behavior.

Conclusion

The researchers have presented a new way of conducting accurate

simulations. And this method should be incorporated into the French

Defense and Security Agency (DGA) AESA radar simulation tool.
