CHANNAHON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

VOLUME 59, NO. 5, MAY 2013

Our mission is to create disciples who nourish faith and work in ministering to the community.

1

Page 2: Circuit Rider news - Channahon United Methodist Church · 2019-10-15 · On Sunday, September 8th, we will resume our regular worship schedule of both 9am and 10:30am services, with

the founding of Channahon UMC when he was

the “Preacher in Charge” of the Des Plaines

circuit, which included all territory between the

Fox River and the Des Plaines River. He

traveled up the Illinois River into what is now

Channahon at McKinley Woods. He then turned

North up the DuPage River. Rev. Walker was

truly a pioneer preacher, moving into the

roughest of settlements to be sure the gospel of

Christ was shared in the most remote regions of

the wilderness. He ministered not only to the

white settlers, but also to the Native Americans,

especially the Pottawatomie tribe. His

diplomatic and organizing skills were evident as

he held a council with five Pottawatomie chiefs

at the mouth of the Fox River (where it empties

into the Illinois River at Ottawa) in the spring of

1824, obtaining permission to start schools for

the tribal children. The famous Chief Shabbona

was among his acquaintances.

As a congregation, I hope we can feel inspired

about our connections with this early Methodist

church planter. Rev. Walker is buried in

Plainfield (where he also founded a Methodist

church), but his pioneer spirit continues in

today’s Methodists who have a passion to share

the gospel in word and deed to all who are open

to it.

Peace, Steve

Help is needed for the Good Samaritan Fund!

Local individuals and families in need of

assistance often come to Channahon UMC for

modest amounts of assistance with gas and

groceries. Our church is able to minister to these

people in need through our Good Samaritan

Fund, which is a non-budgeted fund, supported

wholly from designated gifts from the

congregation or friends of the church. Though

we have been able to help about 25 individuals

and families already in 2013, we are now very

low on our funds. If you can make a donation to

help this ministry, please send a check payable to

"CUMC" and designate it for the "Good

Samaritan Fund". We will include these gifts on

your giving statement. Thank you for your

compassionate generosity!

We will gather as a group at the intersection of Tryon Rd. and Liberty at 1 p.m. and bless HIS creation of nature, then proceed to work in both directions on the trail picking up trash. If you can make it at any time between 1-3 p.m. please feel free to join in. Don't feel like you need to stay the entire time to participate. Wear work gloves, dress for the weather and bring a few garbage bags.

Young Family Fellowship - Immediately following the event, Channahon UMC will host a young family fellowship time (weather permitting) on the playground at the church. Bring out the littlest disciples, pick up some trash, then join with others for some relaxed time to enjoy the children and God's creation.

Finding Balance

With only so many hours in the day, and lots of demands on those hours, singer/songwriter Jeremy Camp admits

that his time with God has sometimes gotten pushed to the back burner.

“I’m a very passionate person who wants to go out and serve God as much as I can,” Jeremy says. “To do that as a

musician, you have to put in a lot of work and lots of traveling. Sometimes, the work of serving the Lord gets in the

way of spending time with the Lord.”

This is exactly what happened during the time Jeremy was trying to get his career up and running.

“Instead of enjoying what God was doing in my life, I spent too much time trying to do more for him,” he says. “I

got too busy and burdened by things that distracted me from spending time with God. By working so hard at my

career, I was also not trusting God enough – I was trying to take control by doing it all alone.”

In addition to non-stop touring and recording, Jeremy got married to solo artist Adie and started a family. As life

continued to get busier and busier, Jeremy finally hit a wall and realized he was trying to do too much.

“I just got to the point where I called out, ‘Help me, Lord!” says Jeremy. “I cried out for forgiveness. I’d let serving

God get in the way of just being with God. When I did, I felt like God said, ‘Jeremy, you cannot steer this ship

alone. Let me give you true peace, joy, and rest.’ I learned that unless we find our contentment in Christ, we’ll just

feel empty after a while.”

Now Jeremy strives to “wake up and smell the coffee” every day. He tries to enjoy the little things, to relax, and to

pay more attention to God. He’s very careful when filling his calendar. He commits to a daily quiet time. And he’s

very intentional about not letting anything – even working for God – keep him from spending time with God. He

says this is also a danger for anyone who loads up their days with youth ministry, serving in other ministries at

church, or other service projects.

“People think the more they are doing for the Lord, the better. And that God will more pleased with them,” Jeremy

says. “But God is more concerned with our relationship with him. If we’re spending enough time with God, those

activities should come as a natural outpouring – not the other way around.”

So if you’re feeling empty, maybe you need to spend more time connecting with God, and less time doing things for

God.

2013 - WINTER JAM

Almost 40 people (kids and adults) car pooled up to the

Sears Centre for the Winter Jam Concert in February. Ten

bands for $10. Although we had to get there pretty early

and wait out in the cold to get seats, we had fun. How can

you not have fun outside with that many people? During the

concert, not only did we hear inspiring music of all kinds,

we saw great pyrotechnics from the group Red. We also

heard some very powerful messages from the artists on how

we can live the life God has given us. Youth Leaders,

Kellen Walker, Mary Caher , Roger Beitzel and Nancy

Geldean were invited backstage to meet some of the artists

and to listen to their words of encouragement for youth

leaders. A big thank you, Kellen, for heading up such a

wonderful and spirit-filled outing. Can’t wait for the next

one!!!

Thank You…

Thank you to all for the prayers and prayer blanket. With

God’s help we will get through this!

Families of Jim & Mike Deboard

I want to thank you for the prayer pillow you made me. It

came in handy for a couple of reasons. I shall use this the

rest of my life. Thank you so much. Yours truly.

Diane Ebert

I would like to offer a sincere thank you to Youth Director

Roger Beitzel for assisting me during the recent

Confirmation Class experience. Many thanks to the parents

of the class, who helped as field trip chaperones, drivers, and

meal providers for our weekly lunch before class. Our

mentors played a very important role as a non-family

member encouraging and listening to our confirmands

during this journey. The mentors were: Kellen Walker, Michelle Lyman, Nancy Geldean, Beth Thelo,

Michelle Barnes, Bonnie Babich, Barb Powell, Mary Caher,

Donna Szoke, Nancy Snow, Randy Platt, Tom Leatherwood.

Pastor Steve

My student Mallory Traver, recently gave me a prayer blanket

from your church for my father. Unfortunately, my dad died of

cancer a few days before the blanket was given. I will be

passing your lovely prayer blanket onto my mother. I believe

that it will give her some comfort and peace in the days ahead.

Thank you for your prayers as my dad battled a rare cancer.

Although it’s quite hard to admit that, in the wake of our loss,

God’s mercy was ever-present. I can see now that it was. It

was there in my brother’s ability to solve problems as they

arorse, with my mother’s continuous care, in the nurses and

social workers actions in making my dad’s final days peaceful,

and finally, it was there in my Dad’s quick end to the suffering.

On behalf of my mother and my family, Thank you so much

for the prayer blanket, it is much appreciated.

Family of Lonnie R. Lullmann

On Behalf of the Will County Land Use Dept.

Resource Recovery & Energy Division, we thank

you for allowing us to utilize your parking lot in

March to serve Channahon and surrounding

communities. Participant feedback was

overwhelming positive. The Haz-Mat Collection

event was very successful with serving about 622

vehicles that day.

Dave Hartke/WCLUD

Thank you for the cards and loving wishes for me.

Barbara Bush

Thank you to all who donated baskets, money,

bought raffle tickets and/or attended the benefit for

my grandson Jimmy Holt. Your thoughtfulness is

greatly appreciated. Frieda Manion

Thank you to Bonnie Babich, Nancy Geldean, and

Dave McMurtry for all they have done for me. And

for my church family for all your support.

Alec Lindstrom

We want to thank everyone for the care and support

we have received while dealing with such a loss.

We are grateful to have such a warm and caring

family here. Thank you so much.

Jean & Ricky Lawrence

The prayer blankets are a warm and meaningful gift

that we will always treasure. This symbol of faith

has provided appreciation for your prayers and the

love of God as our family heals. We send our

sincere thanks to CUMC. With Blessings,

Stan, Martha, Leslie Wadsworth
