What it do, beautiful volunteers? School is out and sleeping patterns are destroyed! Before I go too far into this, let me introduce myself. My name is Alyssa Famolari and I have been elected to serve as your District Editor for the 2015 – 2016 service year. If you did not know already, my alter ego is Kanye West. What Yeezy fanatic has two thumbs and just graduated from Binghamton University? This girl! I will be rocking Syracuse University’s orange this coming fall as a graduate student in their School of Education. Luckily for me, orange is not my color. Keep an eye out for future photos of me looking like a pumpkin in school swag! ! I want to take this time to thank you all for allowing me this opportunity! I would not be able to do this if it was not for your support before and after District Convention: The NYCKI Games. I cannot speak for the rest of the district board, but I am more than sure that they feel the same way. Speaking of the board, this first issue of Circling the Empire will introduce you to them and their lovely faces. Besides the introductions, you will learn more about New York Circle K, from this year’s projects to a CKI acronym cheat sheet. I have never been involved with an organization that uses so many acronyms, but do not worry. Soon, we will be singing these acronyms in our sleep. Do you want to be best friends? Then, you should tell fellow members about this publication. A little publicity never hurt anybody! ! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me, my love. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this month’s read!

Hey, New York District Royalty! I hope that your summer has been filled with the joy of serving others who have less, the excitement of learning new leadership skills, and the wonderful experiences you have with the people you meet on your Circle K journey. The highlight of my summer was conducting my own research and educational project in Alexandria, Egypt! I met with many women in non-profit hospitals and conducted research on the
reasons that hinder the early detection of breast cancer. I held breast cancer awareness workshops for more than 60 women and taught them about the basics of cancer, how to reduce risks, and how to conduct breast examinations. This year, I want to focus on what makes the Circle K experience as unique as it is and what sets us apart from the other community service clubs on our campuses. In Circle K, you get empowerment to change the world, a support system like no other, and the opportunity to participate in some of the most thrilling and exciting experiences. My goal for this service year is to visit every club in our district! Yes, it is a
huge goal, but I have already visited 8 clubs! ! The family that I have made throughout my journey with Kiwanis is what makes me stay, and keeps me coming back! I am sure that resonates with every one of you as well. I cannot wait to attend your socials, share in your celebrations, serve with you at volunteer events, and help you reach your potentials! Here is to an amazing 2015 – 2016 service year!

Something I love about The Thirst Project is that it’s the world's leading YOUTH water activism organization! Their main goal is to spread awareness to students all around the world, and motivate them to be passionate and proactive about the global water crisis. Only after a few encounters with The Thirst Project crew, I came to realize how special this organization really is and how much I wanted to get involved. It's so eye opening to think about how much something as simple as a glass of water changes our lives. When
you really dig into how water controls the way we live, you begin to realize it's interconnected with almost everything. The Thirst Project makes it clear that water equals life and that water is a basic human right. Their mission statement is to end the water crisis through the support

of students all around the world. In the end, it's more about spreading awareness before anything else, which is what makes The Thirst Project so accessible. The Road Warriors will visit your school for free, just to tell you about the global water crisis and what
you can do to help. All you have to do is invite them. It's that easy. That's why I want to support this organization more than anything else. This is why I urge you to learn more about what the water crisis is and join me in supporting The Thirst Project with their mission! Let's be passionate about water, sustainability, and life!

Being a part of our CKI community, we are always looking to help communities, projects, and organizations in need. Cancer has affected not only my life, but also the lives of many people. In the US, 1 in every 2 women and 1 in every 3 men will develop cancer sometime during their life. These risks are high and that is why we have an obligation to donate, volunteer, and raise awareness all over the world! Supporting my governor’s project is very easy! Any service project, event, community service,
or fundraiser you are involved in from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016 counts towards fundraised money and service hours for Knock Out Cancer! This includes Relay for Life, different
types of cancer walks, bake sales fundraising for cancer organizations, and volunteering at events in your school or community. As an incentive, the TWO clubs that have the most service hours and the most fundraised money

towards Knock Out Cancer will each get a pair of boxing gloves inscribed with their club’s name at DCON! I will be working with the NYCKI and International Project Chair Sarah Lee to make a Governor’s Project packet with possible fundraisers, events, organizations, and clubs that our district can support. We have an opportunity to unite and tackle this disease together. Below are some awesome organizations I have found while doing research and working on my packet. So, lets come together, create more birthdays and knock out cancer this 2015-2016 service year!

The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International, and UNICEF have teamed up to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT), which kills one baby every eleven minutes. That equals to nearly 60,000 newborn children every single year! A large number of women also die due to Maternal Tetanus. The effects of the disease are unbearable— newborns suffer frequent, painful convulsions and tremendous sensitivity to light and touch. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open wounds during childbirth. The disease thrives through the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach, and those lacking health care. MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of a 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who

then pass on the immunity to their future babies. It’s heartbreaking that innocent infants and their mothers suffer and die from MNT when it can be
prevented so easily. This is also a remarkable opportunity to reach
the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with lifesaving health care. Increasing delivery systems for MNT vaccines will pave a pathway that’ll provide desperately needed services to these sidelined
families. Kiwanis will help eliminate MNT and change the
world we live in!

Members serve their communities in a multitude of ways. Circle K members have visited nursing
homes, worked with animals, and assisted at food banks.
Circle K molds leaders that possess a sense of self and their abilities. Leadership opportunities
are readily available for all members to reach their potential!
If you’re volunteering at a soup kitchen or just relaxing with other
members, Circle K promotes better social skills and stronger
friendship between its members.

Event Spotlight
There were a lot of kids at the Hemophilia Walk, ready to walk the 5K in their red, blue, and white tie-dyed t-shirts. Their enthusiasm was inspiring because a lot of people were tired so early in the morning. There were over 1,000 people there, including volunteers.
We really crowded Riverside Park, making a big statement within the community. Hemophilia is something that hardly gets any attention. Therefore, it was very nice that Circle K members and Key Clubbers gathered together to make this walk a possibility!

It is a beautiful sight to see an organization grow and incredibly heartwarming to witness all the lives its work touches. As small as the New York City Hemophilia Chapter is, its accomplishments are fantastic. Several moms and dads who simply wanted to see a better life for their Hemophiliac kids and the generations after them founded this organization. In its 10th year, the walk attracted thousands of supporters and surpassed its goal of raising $300,000 to fund research and awareness. I have had the privilege to work with NYCHC for the past 6 years and see the families grow in age in number. This year, I served as volunteer coordinator. It was nerve-wracking to lead almost 100 volunteers, but also exhilarating getting involved with a major walk. I'm so glad that my past club HSMSE Key Club and members of NYCKI could join and see how awesome the organization is! Being behind the scenes, I got to see how much work goes on by the walk manager and how important and helpful volunteers are. To all the volunteers out there, no matter how you help out you make an organizations day - even if they're too frantic to properly tell you that. Keep on living to serve, and loving to serve!

Conferences and Conventions (Con-Con) Committee This committee is responsible for organizing, planning, and running all district events, such as District
Large Service Scale Project (DLSSP), New York Speaking (NYS), and District Convention (DCON).
They are looking for FIVE sub-committee chairs! If you're looking to either expand yourself within CKI, and/or strengthen your leadership and organizational skills, then please consider applying! The
five positions are: Registration, Transportation, Publicity, Fellowship, and Workshops.
