Meet Friendship Circle Advisory Committee Member Evelyn Howard

Evelyn Howard and her two siblings were born to German Jewish parents. Her mother escaped the Nazis with the Kindertransport program that brought her and other children to England. As a child, Evelyn and her family moved from Ecuador to Santiago, Chile, where her father was a chef in their family-owned restaurant. Concerns about the unsettled government precipitated a move to the USA in 1963.

Evelyn graduated from Westmoor High School in Daly City and then attended UC Davis for two years before getting married and receiving both a BA and a Masters of Library Science from UC Berkeley. She worked for the Santa Clara County Library system for 28 years as a reference librarian and head of technical services. As an early retiree, she was a substitute librarian for another 18 years.

While living in San Jose, she became involved in the OLLI (Osher Life Long Learning) Program at the University of

Santa Clara. She currently is the incoming chair of the Life Long Learning Program at Oakmont.

Evelyn has a passion for travel, which she has done extensively. She left mid-July for a one-month trip, which included a “surprise” birthday cruise for a friend beginning in Venice and then on to Croatia with a tour. “I won't go anywhere for fewer days than it takes me hours to get there.” In addition to travel she enjoys reading, hiking and bridge.

A few months after she and her husband moved to Oakmont she was widowed. The move was to be closer to their daughter and two young grandchildren who reside in Santa Rosa. The house they bought belonged to Arthur Shostak who was a speaker at the Friendship Lunch a few months ago. He introduced her to the group and she has enjoyed meeting the nice people who comprise it.
