CIRCLE CITY CIRCULATOR Spring 2010 President’s Message Recently we had just a teaser of several warm days. Consequently, I am eager for spring’s arrival more than ever! I look forward to planting a few flowers and enjoying the outdoors after being inside for far too many months. For CIC, the spring season means board elections are coming soon. This process ensures that you have a voice in the future of our organization. A strong board allows us to keep growing and developing a healthy support or root system just as those plants I hope to nurture. You won’t want to miss our April conference. We are offering an array of interesting and exciting topics. Take a peek inside this info packed newsletter for more details. I hope that you recently took a moment to congratulate yourself or acknowledge a colleague for their achievements on National Certification Day which was on March 19 th . We need let the Hallmark corporation know that this day of celebration is a prime opportunity to sell more cards. My husband insists that some “holidays” such as Sweetest Day are made up just for commercial purpose. Personally, I think he does not want to feel the pressure of needing to “give” me one of those cards. CIC is delighted to support Judy Dodge in attending this year’s NTI! Her scholarship winning exemplar highlighted the worthwhile effort she is doing within her work environment to make it healthy and salutary for staff. We know that a healthy work environment contributes to a more healing and safe atmosphere for patients. Watch out D.C., those politicians will not know what hit them when thousands of nurses, like Judy, invade the city. I always say that if you want to really solve a dilemma put a nurse in charge because they know how to get things done and typically do it with minimal resources. After all, we nurses are masters of “troubleshooting” and finding a solution to our challenges. Join me in saluting Judy and if you too are going to NTI have fun networking and learning from some of the best problem solvers in the workforce. Spring is upon us; so plant your seeds, pull your weeds, and continue to grow with you local chapter of AACN. Sincerely, CIC-AACN Spring Newsletter 2010, Page 1

CIRCLE CITY CIRCULATORSpring 2010President’s Message

Recently we had just a teaser of several warm days.

I hope that you recently took a moment to congratulate yourself or acknowledge a colleague for their achievements on National Certification Day which was on March 19th.

Sincerely,

HWE  Assessment  Tool

The  AACN  Healthy  Work  Environment  Assessment  has  been  live  for  a  few  months  now.    The  assessment  measures  the  current  health  of  a  work  environment  against  the  AACN  Standards  for  Establishing  and  Sustaining  Healthy  Work  Environments.  This  online  tool  is  absolutely  free,  even  when  used  more  than  once  with  the  same  group.

The  assessment  can  be  found  on  the  Web  at  www.hweteamtool.org.  Links  to  the  site  will  also  be  available  at  www.aacn.org.  Feel  free  to  familiarize  yourself  with  the  site,  especially  the  FAQ  sec2on.

Educa8onal  Opportuni8es:

Did  you  know?AACN  offers  unlimited  free  CEUs,  which  they  now  refer  to  as  CNE  (con2nuing  nursings  educa2on  credits).    These  are  offerings  from  AACN  print  journals  and  extensive  Online  CE  Center.    If  you  have  ques2ons,  please  refer  to  the  CNE  Program  Approval  area  of  the  na2onal  AACN  website.    hXp://www.aacn.org/WD/CETests/Content/programapprovalintropage.pcms?menu=Educa2on&lastmenu=

The  benefits  from  this  kind  of  educa2on  include:

Self-‐paced  and  easy-‐to-‐access:  Learners  set  their  own  pace  for  learning  and  can  access  the  courses  from  any  Web-‐connected  computer,  in  any  loca2on,  at  any  2me.  Courseware  can  be  revisited  for  up  to  one  year  as  needed.

Informa4on  is  updated  frequently:  Because  the  courses  are  online,  AACN  can  ensure  that  learners  are  receiving  the  latest  informa2on  and  techniques  with  regular  updates  and  revisions.

Cost-‐effec4ve  and  4me-‐efficient:  Online  educa2on  frees  educators  to  focus  on  applied  clinical  training  using  a  blended  learning  approach.  And  learners  can  start  at  any  2me,  without  concern  for  classroom  or  educator  availability.

Easy-‐to-‐use  tracking  features:  Scored  exams  at  the  end  of  each  module  indicate  comprehension  level  and  enable  the  learner  and  educator  to  pinpoint  specific  learning  needs.  The  LearnCenter’s  extensive  tracking  tools  help  chart  individual  progress,  making  it  easy  to  manage  mul2ple  learners  and  teams.

Quality  support  materials:  Each  course  includes  notebooks  with  objec2ves,  outlines,  and  glossaries.  Online  lessons  include  addi2onal  downloadable  documents  for  offline  reference,  supplementary  material,  self-‐tests,  and  prac2cal  2ps.
