Construction on our new

“shul within a shul” begins the first week of April

unchanged since that time. In recognition of these changes, and in recognition that the pages are falling out of most of our old books, we have ordered entirely new machzorim for this High Holdiay season. Machzor Lev Shalem is being printed this spring, and we plan to have one on your seat this fall. We were able to obtain a special pre-publicaiton price, and will be able to fully cover costs with no more than a one-time $25 per seat surcharge (+$11= $36 for those who wish to dedicate a book in honor/memory of a loved one, more details with your regular seat order). I am well aware that this is an unwelcome expense, at a time when we could all do with fewer expenses. I trust that it is evident that this is not frivolous. The prayerbooks we have are original to this building, that is, they have been in use for over half a century. The opportunity to order new high-quality High Holiday books at a steep discount was available to us this year only. And wait till you see this book. The English translation is clear and faithful to the Hebrew. Archaisms like “thee” and “thou” are gone, as are unnecessary “th”’s attached to words like “giveth” and “taketh”, and words like “dost” will be returned to the dust. The English also reflects the central Jewish belief that God has no gender (without compromising cherished idioms like “Aveinu Malkeinu”). In addition to modern language, the clear English typeface is easier on the eyes than the typefaces that were available to an earlier generation of printers, using two colors and different fonts for different types of texts (like transliterations). The Hebrew printing is clearer as well. Explanations accompany the text, so there is no need to be lost in services, and the margins contain meditations, spiritual quotes, historical notes, and other readings designed to edify and to create a more rewarding experience for the pray-er. Lev Shalem includes all of the prayers and songs that you’re familiar with. As we get closer to the holidays, Cantor Bitton and I will have some preparatory sessions to familiarize folks with this new machzor so we can hit the ground running come Rosh Hashannah. I have not held the book in my hands yet—it is in press as we speak—but I have seen the PDF of the entire work, and couldn’t be more excited. You can see sample pages from across the liturgy at http://www.rabbinicalassembly.org/mahzor.html, or just Google “Machzor Lev Shalem”. I know that you want to enjoy the summer before we start discussing fall, but this is a rare enough event to merit a springtime mention. The Torah blesses us that even though we are satisfied with the old, it is not wasteful to prepare for the future by ushering in the new. Such is the case with our synagogue and the holy books within it. With the people in the building, however, we have a pleasant mix of old and new. I hope to see you as we are blessed with the best of the old and the best of the new.

A word from the Rabbi

“And you will take out the old because of the new.” Leviticus 26:10

As I write, we are in the middle of Passover cleaning. Though I could do with more spring-like weather, I enjoy this annual spring cleaning, and the chance to get rid of the old and bring in the new. There is even a blessing said on the last night of Passover cleaning, fitting, as the ability to get rid of the old and replace it with new is a blessing itself. But it’s not just true of Passover, and it’s not just true of our homes. It’s true at shul as well. We are blessed with the ability to renew, and I’d like to touch on a couple of aspects of renewal. The blessing of renewal is even mentioned in the Torah, in a couple of weeks when we reach Parshat Behukkotai: “You will eat the oldest of the old, and will take out the old because of the new,” (Lev. 26:10) is found among the blessings God offers Israel. What sort of blessing is this? Eating old food and removing old stuff? Rashi explains that God’s blessing is that the old will serve the Israelites so well, they will happily eat the old, as it has retained its flavor, and the abundance will be so great that they will still have old food in their storehouses when it is time to harvest the new. In other words, the greatest of blessings is to be content with the old, but still be able to renew. We’re just about there. As Wendy and John note in their column, construction on our shul is set to begin this spring. The ability to renew our sacred space, while still enjoying it, is a blessing. B’ezrat Hashem, we will be able to continue enjoying the shul while a fitting sanctuary is constructed out of the upper social hall, and we will be able to enjoy that space, a new, proper entrance, and accessibility before long. We are retrofitting our building to meet the needs of today’s congregation, just as the Torah’s blessing would have us clear out the old to bring in the new. This is a major project for us, on a scale that Beth Jacob has not seen in a long time. Visit us during renovations, and help us renew our spirit as we renew our physical plant. This project has enjoyed the support of so many in our community over its long, long planning process, and as work begins, a new feeling will take hold in our humble shul. We are also close to clearing out our old High Holiday prayerbooks, the machzor edited by Rabbi Hillel Silverman. Rabbi Silverman’s introduction to his work is dated September, 1939, a chilling date in Jewish history. From that time, when German tanks began the war that caused still-unimaginable carnage, our world has changed. Our traditions have remained, our faith has remained, but they have been severely tested, and neither Jews nor Judaism are

Rabbi Dan Selsberg

A word from your Co-Presidents A word from the Cantor

Dear Chevre,

We’re delighted to announce the commencement of our Shul within a Shul project. Construction begins the first week of April, immediately following the conclusion of Passover. With all the excitement that accompanies this once in a lifetime opportunity, comes the reality that for the next 5 to 6 months we will need to live with some minor inconveniences. Within the pages of this bulletin we have included a sketch which outlines the main areas affected during the construction: the back entrances, some of the rear parking area (although two- way traffic through the back will be maintained) and of course the area of renovation in the building itself. Primary access in and out of the shul and the school will be through the electronic doors in the courtyard, as well as through the office door located on Cottage Ave. Safety fences will be erected in the parking lot and inside the shul a temporary separating wall will be constructed across the lower foyer to keep dust and noise and interruption to a minimum. We have a great team in charge of this project and we have tried to anticipate all contingencies and maintain smooth operations of shul activity as we work to complete the project on time and on budget. Lorne Richter is our committee liaison dealing with the contractor; Hanna Schayer will coordinate ongoing shul administrative operations; Cheryl Stevens is helping to monitor the finances and budgeting of the project; and of course the Rabbi and Cantor will make sure we stay open for spiritual business as all this transpires. And finally now that our Shul within a Shul is soon to be a reality, and our campaign swings in to its final stages, it is up to all of us to make sure we have participated to the best of our abilities. If you have already pledged and made payments, as so many of you have done, thank you again. For those of you who have yet to commit, now is the time help us finish our dream. We need you now more than ever and there’s no shortage of naming opportunities still available. Our Shul within a Shul is really happening. We should all be very proud. John and Wendy

As we enter the spring, I look forward to a few exciting programs I’ll be involved in at Beth Jacob. We have an exciting educational program which is open to the whole family. Parents and children are invited to take part in “A Prince of Egypt”, an innova-tive theatrical/educational program on Sunday, May 16 from 10:30am-12:00pm. Learning about Judaism can be fulfilling and fun for all ages. I believe that if parents take an active part in their children’s religious education, not only will their children benefit even more but the parents themselves will be enriched by the experience. I ask you to be a part of this new and engaging pro-gram. Please call me at the shul office at 905-522-1351, ext 18 or email [email protected] to partici-pate.

Shortly after Passover, I will lead two programs in prepa-ration for Yom Ha’atzmaut. On Saturday, April 10, fol-lowing services, everyone is invited to attend The Story of Hatikvah. We’ll explore the history of the melody and lyrics of Israel’s beloved national anthem. We’ll also talk about how the official Israeli version is different from the way most of us in Canada and the US sing it. As much of the congregation has already heard, I lead a themed service once a month entitled Saturday Morning Fever. We’ve had a Beatles Shabbat, a Sephardi Shabbat, a Hollywood Shabbat, and a Broadway Shab-bat. On Saturday, April 17, in honour of Yom Ha’atzmaut, I’ll present an Israeli Shabbat. The Shabbat service will be set to a number of gorgeous and favourite Israeli songs. Please join me.

Renate Krakauer speaks onMemories from the Holocaust

One family’s experiences before, during and after the Shoa

only rarely are we given the opportunity to read a holocaust survival story from two members of the same family. Renate Krakauer’s memoir, “but I had a happy childhood” and the companion piece “Memories from the Abyss” by her father, William tannenzapf, were published recently in one volume by the Azrieli Foundation, as part of their second series of holocaust memoirs. together these stories contrast the experiences and emotions of father and daughter during this period. Renate will read selections from both memoirs, putting them into the context of her family history. William and his wife charlottetannenzapf lived in hamilton for almost half a century after immigrating from Poland after the holocaust. Renate attended Westdale Secondary School.

David ben-Gurion, saw clearly that for Israel to survive and thrive it would need to develop the Negev. Inspired by this vision, ben-Gurion University is a major centre for teaching and research and maintains the highest standards of academic excellence, with over 19,000 students enrolled in the facul-ties of engineering Sciences, health Sciences, Natural Sciences, humanities and Social Sciences. Known for breakthrough desert research and desert food production, bGU has become a world leader in medical research, has made gigantic steps in harness-ing the rays of the sun to produce solar energy for domestic and industrial use and will be home to Israel’s National Insti-tute of bio-technology. As Israel’s youngest university it is no surprise that the development of the most modern and fasci-nating technologies derive from bGU: the world’s largest solar disc; growing crops in salt water; the canadian built Robotic center; an archeological dig uncovering the secrets of our past.

Leo Marcus is the Executive Vice-President of Canadian Associates of Ben-Gurion University.
