- Gender diversity matters
- Diverse organisations deliver better results *)

Keys drivers: • Leadership based on
influence rather than
authority
• Focus on what the team
could achieve
• People who believed in
me (more than I did)
• Internal drive & energy
• Wanting to make an impact
• Focus on results

Starting in 2014 we
functionalised Procurement
globally, established regional
Procurement centres and
built out our BuySell capability.
Today we are seen as a

focused on Cost Out &
Value In.

Diversity is much more
than a gender question:
Diversity of age
Diversity of
background and
experience
Racial / ethnic
diversity

People management skills
Today we focus increasingly on:

Focus should not be on male or female, but on having the right skill set

Peterson Institute for Industrial Economics & EY study of 21,980 global,
publicly traded companies in 91 countries:
Female CEOs do not systematically outperform their male counterparts
Having at least 30 % of women in leadership positions adds 6 % to net
profit margin
Relationship between diversity and performance is a correlation, not a
causal link.
More diverse companies are better able to win top talent and improve
their decision making and customer orientation.
To benefit from gender
diversity a company
needs critical mass

It all starts good with an almost

However, very few women make it
to the C-suite

Chat with group of a random group
of procurement leaders:
My young female
procurement professionals
are fantastic; many better
than their male colleagues
I am worried about my
female mangers going on
maternity leave
As a company we are
not comfortable to
promote women to the
top table
This is how we lose some of our best
talent!
We seem to have overcome the major
recruitment hurdles for entry level positions.
We are becoming smarter around allowing
people to balance family and work.
Is there a glass ceiling after all?
If we see the value diversity brings, we must
be able to overcome in-group favouritism.

Attracting diverse talent
- Focus on diversity in the recruitment process
- Broaden the search, min 1 female on shortlist
Developing and retaining talent
- Discuss career aspirations and plans to get there
- Monitor work satisfaction
- What do young parents need? Flexible work arrangements can make a difference
- Mentoring and sponsorship
Building diverse leadership teams
- Align on benefits of diverse teams and discuss how to get there
- Set diversity targets for succession / candidate lists, but don’t apply quotas!

For organisations:
Start a business-wide, transformational
diversity program
Don’t leave this to HR
Study your unconscious biases and
obstacles female colleagues encounter
Discuss your different styles
Align on the benefits of a diverse team
(value proposition)
Decide to strive for diversity
Don’t apply female quotas!
For female colleagues:
Forget about the glass ceiling – if you don’t
believe it is there, it will not stop you!
Don’t worry about the boys networks, create
your own
Learn to “Lean In”
- Make your voice heard in meetings
- Take credit for your work
- Let your ambitions and aspirations be
known
- Ask for a stretch assignment and a pay
increase
Be clear on what you want to achieve and
what sacrifices you will have to make

Gender equality – it is not only the right thing to do but also the smart thing to do
It is about fairness, attracting best talent and business results.
We can all do more for gender diversity
Don’t leave it to HR!
Call for action
What will you do to help your organisation benefit from a (gender) diverse team?
