SGI - BE A GOOD WINGMAN THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Plan ahead so we can all make it home safely to our loved ones.
Family gatherings, holiday parties and festive cheer with friends make for some special memories over the holidays.
Make sure the magic and memories of the holiday season never end. Be a good Wingman by stepping up and stopping family and friends from driving impaired. Show your loved ones how much you care by making sure they get home safely – arrange for a sober ride, or offer them a place to stay for the night.
We hope you enjoy the fun and festivities, but remember – there’s never an excuse for driving impaired. There are a number of ways to ensure everyone gets home safely over the holidays. From everyone at SGI, take care out there.
Safe Ride Ideas
There’s always a better option than driving impaired. The key is to plan your safe ride home in advance, before your judgment is impaired. Here are some other options:
choose a designated driver in advance
call a cab
call a friend or family member to pick you up
use a designated driving service
host a party and let your guests stay the night
book a hotel room for the night
get a group of friends together and book a limo or party bus for the night
SGI has a free Safe Ride app to help you keep track of your options.
Whatever ride you choose, make sure it’s a safe and sober one.

People are discovering the benefits of eating
fermented foods such as kimchi, kombucha and
our old favorite: pickles!
The liquid that’s left in the jar after you’ve eaten
the last pickle can be used for so many useful
things.
But after reading this, you won’t be inclined to
pour it down the sink again.
We will give you a list of 13 things to do with
leftover pickle juice.
So what’s in pickle juice you might ask, well
basically it consists of water, vinegar, and salt.
1. Settles upset stomachs
The acidity of pickle juice can balance the PH
level’s in your stomach.
2. Soothes mosquito bites
Do you have an irritating mosquito bite? Dab it
with a little pickle juice.
The vinegar in the brine will soothe your skin and
prevent itching.
Moisturize later so the pickle juice won’t dry out
your skin.
3. Relaxes muscle cramps
Pickle juice is surprisingly useful for muscle
cramps both when it happens and as a preventive
measure.
Researchers aren’t certain why people get cramps,
but dehydration and lack of salt are reasons why.
Brine contains high levels of sodium and
potassium, so try drinking a shot or two of pickle
juice before exercising if you often get cramps.
4. Cures hangovers
Drink a 100 ml of pickle juice when you wake up
in the morning if you suffer from hangovers, the
salt in the brine is said to work wonders.
5. Cleans copper
Most of us have some copper items at home which
eventually turn green.
Try dipping a rag in pickle juice and then polish
your copper with it your copper will brighten up.
6. Preserves food
Soak any veggies in pickle and place in the fridge
they’ll last a week longer and taste divine!
7. Spices up drinks
This recipe has surprised more than one person.
Pour a shot of vodka and a shot and a half of
pickle juice over ice, shake well and pour into a
martini glass.
8. Soothes heartburn
According to some a little pickle juice mixed with
a spoonful of honey can relieve heartburn.
9. Kills Weeds
Simply spray weeds with brine and soon they will
disappear leaving your garden nice and clean.
10. Makes food more delicious
If you like making your own salad dressings or
vinaigrettes, try substituting pickle juice for
vinegar, you can also use brine to marinate meat.
11. Relieves sunburns
If you have sunburn dip some cotton balls into
pickle juice and swab your sunburnt skin, it helps
to relieve the burning sensation.
12. Kills bad breath
Foul breath is sometimes caused by bacteria in the
mouth, and maybe that’s why pickle juice is said
to improve breath.
Tests show that drinking a shot of brine every day
for a week makes your mouth smell better.
13. Eases sore throats
Drink a spoonful of pickle juice when you feel a
sore throat coming on.
Vinegar is said to be an effective, natural
alternative to cough medicine.
Pickles - Not just for eating!
CIPI Newsletter – December 21st, 2018
Tansi. Here is an update from this department. I
have been actively working on grant applications
to administer various sport, culture and recreation
programs and projects in our community. There
are currently two cultural programs that are still
taking place, one is fiddling and the other jigging.
These should be completed by the end of
December and then reports will be submitted to
the funders. I can then apply for further funding
opportunities from Saskatchewan Culture Inc. and
Urban Programming for indigenous Peoples of
Canada.
Grants that have been awarded so far include a
$5000 grant from Aboriginal Sport Development
of Canada which is to be used for a community
Archery Program and $10,000 from Community
Initiatives Fund for Cultural Campouts beginning
in the Spring of 2019. I had also submitted an
application to the Toronto Blue Jays Foundation in
October for the ball diamond upgrades and I’m
happy to say that the application was approved to
the next level. More information on this grant will
be made available in January or February of next
year. Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation
Association awarded a $2000 grant to be used for
the purchase of two Indoor Curling Kits. This
equipment has since been ordered and a schedule
for indoor curling will be posted once everything
is in place.
Taking It Global which focuses on youth activities
approved a $1500 grant and this will be used to
promote youth cultural events on New Year’s Eve.
Applications for funding for Canada Day 2019 and
Indigenous Peoples Day 2019 have already been
sent in prior to the November 21st deadline.
Other grants that I am currently working on is the
annual Sask Lotteries Community Grant along
with the New Horizons Seniors Grant which will
have a positive impact on the elders. More recently
on December 5th to the 7th, our organization
administered training call “Forever-In-Motion”. A
total of 5 community members are now trained
volunteers to administer a moderate exercise
program for the older adults. The following people
include: Ted Hood, Chavonne Durocher, Gena
McCallum, Wayne Laliberte & Melissa Eldridge.
Instructor was Bonnie Anderson of Wakaw, Sask.
This training was made possible courtesy of a
$2000 grant from Saskatchewan Parks and
Recreation Association.
On a different note, I would like to thank the
Beauval General Store for their kind contribution
towards the Gospel Show supper on December
21st and thank you also to Orano and Cameco for
the donation towards the annual Santa Anonymous
campaign. I was responsible for forwarding letters
of solicitation for these two community initiatives.
That concludes my report, however I will continue
to keep you updated on any new developments
with regards to funding various programs and
projects. I would like to wish each and every one a
very Merry Christmas & all the best in 2019.
Wayne Laliberte - Projects/Grants Coordinator
BEAUVAL MINOR SPORTS & RECREATION - PROJECTS/GRANTS REPORT
