Entrepreneurship provides a creative force of economic development. Entrepreneurs lead economic change by creating new goods and services and innovative solutions and play a vital role in the development of democracy. Entrepreneurship expands opportunity, unleashes individual initiative, and cultivates independent citizens who have a stake in society and democratic governance. Therefore entrepreneurship plays a key role in building not just prosperous economies but democracies that deliver opportunity to their citizens.

In most countries, however, entrepreneurs still struggle with the basics of operating and growing their businesses because the legal and institutional barriers to participation persist. Building a truly competitive entrepreneurship ecosystem requires an environment where businesses can operate on a level playing field, where their rights are pro-tected, and the same rules apply to all.

The Center for International Private Enterprise’s (CIPE) experience around the world shows that entrepreneurs themselves can become a driving force for reform, when they work together and make their voices heard in the policymaking process through business associations and chambers of commerce.
