Ensuring our members are kept informed andaware of opportunities to learn and connect acrossNorthern Ireland is key and we continue tocommunicate via our monthly e-newsletter on thefirst Tuesday of each month.

Looking ahead our priority remains the same:driving change in the world of work, led by a strongcommunity of people professionals acrossNorthern Ireland.

To this end, we continue to plan a programme ofactivity that meets members' needs in such rapidlychanging times. We end our financial year bysaying goodbye and a huge thank you to our pastbranch chair Lynn Carson and look forward toworking with the new chair, Beth McMawConsidine, vice chair Nicola Barber and the rest ofthe NI volunteer committee.

As always, we would love to hear from you, afterreading our highlights below, as to what else wecould or should be doing to champion better workand working lives in Northern Ireland and wouldencourage you to share your thoughts with me orwith Avril Anderson our Member, Networks andCommunities Manager.

We closed our financial year on 30 June 2020, andwhile CIPD prepares its formal annual review, andfollowing our branch annual meeting in July, it’s agood time for us to reflect on our highlights for theyear in delivering to our members in NorthernIreland.

Our purpose - as the professional body for HR andpeople development and as a charity - is tochampion better work and working lives. Weworked hard over the last 12 months, supported bya growing community of around 3,500 membersand volunteers, to deliver on this purpose inNorthern Ireland in many ways.

I’m very proud of how our networks have rallied inrecent months to continue to support ourmembers through such challenging times, and thesupport and sharing across the HR community inNorthern Ireland has been inspiring.

We continue our work to improve the membershipexperience and the value people professionals getfrom being part of our Northern Irelandprofessional community.

Our branch volunteers delivered several engagingand informative events over the past year coveringa variety of topics including wellbeing and ethicalbehaviour in the workplace, in addition to thelaunch of the member to member mentoringscheme and student inductions.

We also continue to listen to our members’ needsand as a result we recently launched our newmonthly employment law sessions, which havebeen very well received.

The 2019 CIPD Northern Ireland Conference at the ICC, Belfast on 28 November was a huge successattracting more than 300 delegates, and as such was the CIPD’s biggest ever conference in NorthernIreland. This year’s conference focused on driving fair, meaningful and productive work.

Speakers

Opening the event, CIPD Membership Director David D’Souza impressed upon delegates the role of HR increating environments where people feel empowered and can speak out, and the importance of putting goodwork at the heart of the profession.

Angela Peacock, CEO, of PDT Global delivered an excellent keynote on reducing bias in the employee lifecycle and identifying the roadblocks to an inclusive workplace culture, and television presenter Jason Bradbury, delivered a thought- provoking closing session highlighting the many ways that AI and automation are impacting the way we live and work.

We were most grateful for the support of a range of expert speakers for our breakout sessions and panel discussions, including speakers from the Northern Ireland Civil Service, EnterpriseHoldings, Police Service NI, ACAS, PDT Global, Australia National University, Bank of Ireland, Macmillan CancerSupport, Queen’s University Belfast, Travelex, Nottingham Business School, Deloitte, IBM, BardPharmaceuticals, Ulster University CDE Global, and a number of CIPD experts.

We had an excellent response to this year’s awards, with high-quality entries across all 11 categories,including new categories for HR SME of the Year and External Consultancy, demonstrating the measurableimpact that people professionals are having across organisations in the public, private and third sectors inNorthern Ireland.

Congratulations to everyone who has reached the shortlist.

As with so many events, sadly the 2020 CIPD NI Awards, which were due to take place at Titanic Belfast onThursday 21 May had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

The awards ceremony is being replaced by a virtual event which will take place on Thursday 1 October, andwe very much hope that as many of you as possible will join us online to find out who this year’s winner are.Look on our social media channels and in our monthly newsletter for details.

Senior leader event, OctoberBridging the gap: tackling skill shortages in the fourthindustrial revolution

Our expert panel including Michael Gould from the Department forthe economy, Gareth Hetherington, director of the UlsterUniversity Economic Policy Centre, Northern Ireland ElectricityNetworks HR Director, Gordon Parkes, and CIPD skills adviser,Lizzie Crowley, joined CIPD’s senior stakeholder lead, Katie Jacobs,to discuss how organisations, government and education areapproaching planning the skills requirements for the jobs of thefuture, and how to better prepare young people for the world ofwork.

LGBT inclusion at work, November

We were delighted to co-host a roundtable discussion on LGBTinclusion at work with the Government Equalities Office to find outabout the biggest challenges, barriers and opportunities thatemployers are facing when it comes to improving inclusion forLGBT+ people in work. Many thanks to everyone who attended andshared their experiences, which will help to inform public policyoutcomes.

Senior leader event, JanuaryHow artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are shaping theworld of work, associated ethical implications, and the role ofHR professionals

Our new NI branch chair, Beth McMaw Considine, facilitated thisevent where Lynne Raine and Martin Groom from PwC sharedsome of PwC’s latest research on what the world of work will looklike in 2030, and CIPD’s Ed Houghton presented the latest CIPDresearch and insights on the role of the profession in 2030.

As a follow-up to this event, we were delighted that Ed Houghtonalso had the opportunity to share some of our views on thechallenges that people professionals face in creating the workplaceof the future on the PwC NI website.

Members have the opportunity to get involved in understandingand shaping the future of the people profession by taking part inthe CIPD Hackathon from 10 - 20 August. Find out more.

Many thanks to everyone who completed our member survey in May. We had an excellent response and theresults are already helping us to shape our events programme and our contribution to public policyconsultations in Northern Ireland for the coming year.

We had strong support for three specialist networks, and are now starting to shape new networks forOrganisational Development specialists and independent consultants which will be launched later this year,with a Learning and Development network being planned for 2021.

We have continued to work with the Belfast Telegraph/niobfinderthroughout the year.

Our Ask the Expert series of Q&A-led features allowed us toshowcase our specialist expertise in a variety of areas includingrecruitment, job applications, contracts of employment, bonuses andincentives, inductions and coaching and mentoring.

We’ve also had features in print and online on managing bullying andharrassment in the workplace, the menopause and most recently onplanning the return to the workplace post Covid-19.

We are continuing to build our social media following, and havemore than 8,500 followers on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook,where we keep members up to date with news from NorthernIreland, as well as the latest CIPD national campaigns, news andresearch.

In addition, our monthly newsletter, which reaches more than4,500 subscribers, provides updates on our events, CIPD reports,blogs, webinars and links to a range of useful resources on the firstTuesday of every month.

CIPD NI Employment Law Webinar Series

In May we launched a series of employment law webinars,delivered by some of Northern Ireland’s top employment lawyers,to help members navigate through some of the new employmentlaw resulting to the pandemic and beyond.

Many thanks to Paul Gillen from Pinsent Masons, Louise McAloonfrom Worthingtons Solicitors and Lisa Bryson from EvershedsSutherland for delivering the first three sessions.

CIPD Profession Map Workshops on CoreBehaviours

We’re also running a series of eight interactive workshops on thecore behaviours of the New Profession Map, which kicked off inJune with a session on ethical practice.

CIPD NI Webinars

Since the lockdown we’ve been running a series of webinars for members in Northern Ireland offering supportwith employment law and core HR skills.

CIPD NI Branch

The CIPD NI team continues to work closely with the NI branch which provides a programme of learning andnetworking events and activities, delivered by a team of committed branch volunteers. For many of ourmembers, these events are their main face-to-face contact with the CIPD, and we hugely appreciate the effortsof everyone involved to make these events engaging, welcoming and inclusive.

During the past 12 months, the NI branch has hosted events on support for menopausal women at work, amock tribunal, a panel discussion exploring CIPD’s research unto unethical behaviour in the workplace, and anumber of social events.

The branch also launched a mentoring programme in January, matching experienced HR practitioners withthose starting out in their HR careers. This initiative has been very successful, with the first cohort being filled,and the branch are extending this round until January 2021.

Branch volunteers also visited CIPD centres in NI at the start of the 2019/20 academic year to welcomestudents onto their qualifications and discuss the benefits of CIPD membership.

Finally a huge thank you to Lynn Carson, who is retiring asbranch chair after a long period of service within the branch, and

to everyone on the CIPD NI committee who has been involvedwith setting up and supporting branch events, and our CIPD NI

events and conferences throughout the year.
