This year is going to be a busy one for residents of Knowle West. With consultants employed to work with residents to draw up a plan for the redevelopment of the area, you have the opportunity to shape what the area will look like in the future. If you don’t get involved then other people will influence the plans that will be drawn up, not you. So get involved.

These plans might lead to new houses being built, better parks and green spaces, new facilities such as a community centre or shops, and places for people to work. Community in Partnership are working with residents to help them to better understand the

planning process so that they are able to work closely with the consultants who will be drawing up the plans.

If you want to find out more or get involved with the Community in Partnership Planning Group, give us a call on 0117 908 4248 or pop into our office at 37 Filwood Broadway.

Recently, Reminiscence project participants went to St Fagans National History Museum in Wales, an open air folk museum where buildings have been re-erected to portray what life was like over a period of time. Everyone enjoyed looking at the schoolhouse, old cottages, old sweetshops and had a great time remembering what life was like when they grew up. If you would like to find out more about getting together to discuss the past and record memories in a book, tel: KW Health Association 0117 963 9569.

SUPeRSTaR TaLeNT SHOW COVeR STORYKURT JAMES, CIP

In the past, Knowle West has earned awards, national recognition and even the attention of the Prime Minister for its innovative Street Reps, who work tirelessly to keep the streets of the area clean and tidy.

They take responsibility for a street and keep their eyes open for mess (such as a dumped sofa), list the things that need to be sorted out, and use a free phone number to report them.

Being a Street Rep is not about being a busy body or fighting crime. It is simply about saying I want to help make my area clean and tidy, and make sure that the agencies responsible for sorting out problems do the jobs that they are paid to do and do them well. We need more residents to be Street Reps. So if you want to help, get in touch with Community in Partnership on 0117 908 4248 or pop into our office at 37 Filwood Broadway.

The consultants for the area’s Regeneration Framework are Urban Initiatives, who have an excellent track record of working with local communities to secure improvements to neighbourhoods. The Regeneration Framework is expected to guide major investment in the area, providing greater housing choice, new jobs and local facilities, and improved accessibility; and it is important that local people get to contribute towards the development of this plan

When work starts this year, local residents will be invited to be involved in shaping these exciting plans. Urban Initiatives will be available in the Filwood Broadway area to talk with local residents. Do please get involved when the time comes.

This is it folks, that time of year when your garden goes crazy - the soil warms up, the lawn grows with a vengeance and so do the weeds!March is the beginning of the main growing season, most flowers and vegetables can be sown now and into April/May. Don’t panic if you are not ready to plant yet, gardening is not a precise science because a lot of it depends on the weather. If you have a greenhouse, give it a good clean (if you haven’t already) and all the pots and seeds for re-use, this stops the spread of some pests and diseases. Once this is done, start sowing your seeds. Don’t forget, tougher crops can be started off in cold frames or sown directly into your plot.Read your seed packets carefully - the blurb contains everything you need to know to grow a successful crop. First-time grower? Begin with foolproof crops like lettuce, tomato and radish.Happy sowing!

You may have thought that Knowle West’s Carbon Makeover was coming to an end in December last year. Well, so did we! Carbon Makeover has now been given the go-ahead to continue until the end of March, and possibly beyond. We would like to say a big thank you and well done to all of our homes for being part of it. Let the ‘greening’ of Knowle West continue!

Our focus for the winter has been getting Efergy meters to as many homes as possible. This nifty little gadget plugs into your electricity cable and allows you to monitor how much you are spending on electricity at any given moment. Attention all energy geeks, soon you’ll be able to compare your electricity usage with other people from across the world. Contact Misty to find out how.

2009 will also see the official launch of the very exciting Green Medicine project – 1 of 4 Carbon Makeover campaigns. Akilah is selling plants that can be used to treat minor health problems such as coughs and colds etc. She is offering Carbon Makeover homes a special deal of buy-one-plant-get-one-free. Contact Akilah on 07980 530715 or www.green-medicine.org.uk

And lastly, some exciting news! Carbon Makeover has been asked to represent the UK at a European Commission conference in Brussels called ‘Social Fairness in Sustainable Development – A Green and Social Europe’. We will be 1 of 10 projects from around the world presenting. This is Knowle West’s chance to influence European policy on climate change. We are very proud to have been invited. There will be a PACT “roadshow”, highlighting the success of the PACT initiative, on the 18th March, 7 – 9pm at South Bristol Sports Centre, West Town Lane.

All are welcome to attend, meet their neighbourhood team, and learn more about the PACT process.

DaTeS FOR PaCT meeTINgS

POLICe NeWSWHAT DOES PACT DO FOR ME?

People say “What’s the point of a meeting, nothing gets done? People want action, not words” – am I right?

If you’re one of those people, let me lay down a challenge. Come to the next PACT meeting in your area, and tell us what your problems are. Decide for yourselves whether we then tackle the problems, or simply talk about them.

A couple of residents of Ilminster Avenue took the challenge, came to the PACT meeting on the 2nd December and told us that they were fed up with anti-social behaviour and drug dealing in their street. The meeting agreed that this was a priority, so the neighbourhood team quickly wrote to every resident in the affected area, asking them what the problems were, when they were occurring and who was causing them. It might surprise you to know that a number of residents replied to this, and they gave us enough information to enable us to get two drugs warrants for addresses in that street.

Our drugs team, neighbourhood team and officers from Bristol City Council Housing executed the warrants, both of which were successful in showing evidence of drug use / supply. The councils’ anti-social behaviour team then followed up this action by taking the occupants of 95 Ilminster Avenue to court, for a “crack house” closure (this can be done for any sort of drugs, not just “crack”). The court agreed, the occupants were evicted and the house was boarded up.

All of that meant nothing if we didn’t tell people what had happened, and so we made sure another letter was given to every address informing them of what had happened, and also asking them if the problem had stopped. Hopefully, these actions have helped to make the lives of people in that street just a little bit easier – if it hasn’t, please let us know!

So once again I ask - if you are thinking “what does PACT do for me?” - come to the next meeting and put us to the test.

All meetings coming up are listed to the right.

The Christmas Craft Fair and Carol Concert in Filwood Social Club and on the Green outside, was described as magical. It was a great afternoon and evening with free food, mulled wine, Christmas stalls, stunning dance, and 200 people singing carols round a beautiful 10-foot Christmas tree while huge lanterns were lit and floated across the Broadway. The afternoon was organised in association with local schools, with beautiful crafts from Oasis Academy, and The Community Kitchen also provided excellent food. Many thanks to South Together and Andrea Rea for funding and helping organize the event, Neighbourhood Management, Rework, Joshua Trust, Tana Holmes, Tracy Bedford, Jane Grinonneau, Julie & Pete Ackerman, and all who came along.

The Park Centre held its annual Pensioner’s Christmas party with great success. 100 local pensioners were treated to entertainment, music and great food, provided by staff, students and local groups. Jean Maloney said: “I thought it was brilliant. The food selection was excellent”. Pat Milkins said: “I had a great day, it was so well organised by the young people”. Thanks to everyone involved. FOOTPRINTS CHILDReN’S CeNTRe: OFSTeD VISIT

In December 2008, Ofsted also visited Footprints for a new type of inspection to see how well services are working together to support children and families.

The inspectors said ‘children and babies make particularly good progress in their personal, social and language skills in all groups’.

They also considered our ‘PEEP’ sessions as highly effective in promoting exploration and children’s listening skills as well as parents understanding of communication.

Many other services were praised for the positive impact on children, with targets set around improving data collection and further developing our links with health.

I would like to personally thank all the agencies we work with, the parents, children and staff team for their contribution towards this positive report.

The credit crunch is affecting us all and most people have struggled over

Christmas. Banks have reduced lending to people and other banks, which has

caused much confusion in the financial world.

The crisis started in America in 2007 when banks lent out invested money to

other banks and as the world’s finances are so closely linked it has affected

banks throughout the western world.

People had put their trust in the banks to keep their money safe but the banks

have lent that money out, so governments have been asked

to step in and help. In the meantime banks are struggling

and unable to lend out money causing

‘the credit crunch’.

Over 200 people descended upon KWMC when First Group took away a major part of our bus route. Well now we have the chance as a community to stand up and say ‘Ha- we are going to find our own way to travel!’ ‘Instead of

high fares, long waits, and traffic jams, we choose another way to travel - we choose our future!’

Families with children and people aged 50 plus in Knowle West, Hartcliffe and Withywood are invited to be part of this free local project exploring how we travel and what the alternatives are. It’s your chance to have your say and help shape how the project works and what the rewards will be….

First meet-up in March. No skills or experience needed just a voice that wants to be heard!
