WELCOMEWelcome to the second Lisburn Cinemagic Film and Television Festival. Following the success of 2009, I am delighted to announce that Cinemagic will be returning to Lisburn from 19th – 26th June 2010. This year’s festival includes lots of amazing opportunities and I would greatly encourage any young person aged 4 – 25, who is interested in exploring their creativity and skills to get involved! This programme is action packed with fantastic film screenings including international feature films, documentaries, shorts, education packages and accompanying industry workshops. Throughout the festival Cinemagic offers a series of practical educational opportunities within our extensive primary and secondary school programme and lots of masterclasses such as acting for film and television. I am delighted to announce the return of Cinemagic Stars, and one of Cinemagic’s Patrons, Suranne Jones, who will be staging a musical in less than 10 hours with young budding actors and actresses. Cinemagic Lisburn Film and Television Festival is a great opportunity for young people throughout the city and surrounding areas to get involved in an exciting festival, learn in a creative environment and have lots of fun as well as make lots of new friends. I am delighted to announce that in the lead up to Cinemagic’s 20th Anniversary, Cinemagic will also be expanding to deliver events in Belfast, Dublin, France, Glasgow, Nottingham, New York and Los Angeles. In 2010 alone, it is expected that over 35,000 young people will be involved in Cinemagic events throughout Ireland, UK, France and USA. A massive thank you to Lisburn City Council and the Island Arts Centre for all their support, and to our loyal industry professionals who remain committed to providing amazing opportunities for young people. And to you, the public for supporting and being part of what is now the largest Children’s Film and Television Festival for Young People in the UK and Ireland. We look forward to seeing you at the festival. Joan Burney KeatingsChief Executive, Cinemagic

Consequently this presents a range of opportunities for young people who may want to be entertained, educated and inspired to get involved, whether it’s to watch and enjoy, create work or take things a stage further by finding out more about possible careers in the film or television industries.

I am proud that the Council is a lead part of this fantastic event and I encourage all young people to participate and share the experience and fun that awaits!

Good Night, And Good Luck with Media Culture Discussion

Based on true events, this tense drama from director George Clooney, recreates the 1950s and the era of Senator Joseph McCarthy, who lead a campaign to name and shame people who he believed to be communists, based on little or no evidence. In this time of Cold War, paranoia and fear, CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow’s (David Strathairn) decision to stand up against McCarthy brought about great professional risk to him and his colleagues.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Broadcaster and Film Correspondent Tim Burden about issues relating to the film such as media culture, censorship and freedom of expression.

This screening of “Good Night, and Good Luck” will be preceded by approximately 20 minutes of short films made by Moving Image Arts students from Lisburn.
