DESCRIPTION

The paintings in Glamoured by Decay, in a sense, are contemporary meditations on the vanitas idea – the exhibition is peppered with larger than life depictions of skulls, rotting fruit and dead animals. Confronting Wright’s paintings brings one inexorably face to face with the inevitability, as well as the perhaps unexpected, quiet beauty of death and decay.

Quite apropos, the exhibition title Glamoured by Decay alludes directly to the two most striking elements of Cindy Wright’s work – the almost photorealistic beauty of the paintings, paired with the solemn morbisolemn morbidity of Wright’s subject matter. Flemish by birth, Wright paints in the rich tradition of Dutch Baroque still life painting, and especially the vanitas motif – an object included within the composition to remind the viewer of the fact of one’s mortality. The paintings in Glamoured by Decay, in a sense, are contemporary meditations on the vanitas idea – the exhibition is peppered with larger than life depictions of skulls, rotting fruit and dead animals. ConfConfronting Wright’s paintings brings one inexorably face to face with the inevitability, as well as the perhaps unexpected, quiet beauty, of death and decay.

Equally notable is Wright’s astounding skill as a painter; her attention to detail and mastery of color and composition hearken back to the Old Masters in whose footsteps she follows. Rich and lustrous, the paintings, as crystal clear lenses, call upon viewers to concentrate ttheir attention and sympathies entirely upon the remains of the creatures or objects so painstakingly depicted.

Cindy Wright was born in Herentals, Belgium in 1972. She holds an MFA in painting from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, and was awarded a postgraduate laureate by the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (Antwerp) in 2006. Wright’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including in exhibitions at the Las Vegas Art Museum, the Musee des Arts Decorades Arts Decoratifs (Paris), the Museum van Elsene (Brussels), and the Torrance Art Museum (Torrance, CA). Her work is also included in the permanent collections of the Museum van Elsene (Brussels), the Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego), the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (Madison, WI), and the National Bank of Belgium, among others. Wright currently lives and works in Antwerp.
