It’s only natural to think of reunions at this time ofyear, with families spending time together over theholidays, then gearing up to go back to schoolwith much-missed friends. Even in the cinemaworld, some of our oldest and dearest friends areback! First up, our favourite superhero family isback in Incredibles 2 – it’s been 14 years, but theyare just as much fun to be around. And we’re alsolooking forward to returning to a certain sunnyGreek island with Meryl Streep in our heart andcatchy Abba songs in our heads for Mamma Mia!Here We Go Again. Bring on those cocktails (onlyif age-appropriate of course!) and let’s get ready tosing and dance in the aisles.

We’re also celebrating another cinema milestone– the 60th anniversary of Hitchcock’s masterpieceVertigo. Re-released in a new 4K print, this is awonderful chance to experience Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart in all their technicolour,Bernard Herrmann-scored glory. We’re takingthe opportunity to revisit some of our veryfavourite films from the Master of Suspense in a mini-season that spans his long career from The Lady Vanishes to Frenzy.

Films which explore artistic creativity and the burden it brings are also a theme in this guide, with documentaries exploring the troubled life of pop star Whitney Houston, and Mark Cousins’much-anticipated film about Orson Welles. Bypopular demand, we’ve also brought back McQueen, the astonishing film about fashiondesigner Alexander Lee McQueen, in case youmissed it on its first outing in DCA Cinema.

Whatever your holiday plans are for the comingmonths, we hope they are filled with good times, sunshine, and of course, trips to the cinema!

Whitney Fri 6 – Thu 19 July

Scottish filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (TouchingThe Void) returns to his documentary roots withWhitney, a new film about the rise and fall of popsuperstar Whitney Houston.

Despite her miraculous voice, Whitney battled personal demons and a drug addiction which ledto her untimely death at 48. Combining candid interviews with archival footage, Macdonald explores her difficult upbringing, early struggles, and rise to international fame. He reveals the experiences, including a devastating revelationabout a childhood trauma, which shaped her earlylife and drove her ambition but also fed into herself-destruction. Macdonald doesn’t shy awayfrom the inner conflict Houston also carried as anAfrican-American performer who constantly had to appeal to both white and black audiences. He also tactfully addresses the possibility of her sexuality being a hidden aspect of the singer’scomplex and compartmentalised life.

Ultimately, Whitney is an insightful yet heart-breaking portrait of an artist and star who seemeddoomed to shine very brightly then tragically burnout but, as her fans will attest, never fade away.

Mary Shelley Fri 13 – Thu 19 July

Saudi Arabian director Haifaa al-Mansour follows up her much-admired debut Wadjdawith another film that celebrates andchampions rebellious woman fighting to make their presencefelt. Despite the common themes between the two works, thesetting could not be more different in Mary Shelley, a historicalcostume drama about the young life of the famous Frankensteinwriter.

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Elle Fanning) is an unusually mature and poised 16-year-old. Drawn to ghost stories andgraveyards, she has a passion for reading and a desire to writeher own works. When she meets the radical poet Percy ByssheShelley (Douglas Booth), she becomes convinced she’s met her soulmate. Defying the disapproval of her father William(Stephen Dillane), the youthful Mary leaves home to be withShelley, accompanied by her boldly flirtatious stepsister Claire(Bel Powley) who soon endears herself to the mad, bad LordByron (Tom Sturridge). Deeply affected by the death of hermother, Mary’s fascination with the possibility of re-animatinglife and her sense of loneliness and abandonment feed into theconstruction of Frankenstein's famous, pitiful creature.

While contemporary resonances with Shelley’s story of awoman trying to be taken seriously in a man’s world are clear, there is also much period detail to enjoy on display. Atmospheric and brooding, Mary Shelley is ultimately the storyof a woman finding her voice and asserting her independence.

Racer and the Jailbird Le Fidèle Fri 20 – Thu 26 July

Belgian director Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead) reunites with Matthias Schoenaerts for this romantic thriller set against abackdrop of high-octane high speed racing and an elite gang of thieves. Full of sizzling chemistry between the two leadsand some fantastic car chases, this is very much a love story with a pulsating heart – something for everyone!

When import/export tycoon Gino (Schoenaerts)meets race car driver Bénédicte (Blue Is The Warmest Colour’s Adèle Exarchopoulos) the attraction is instant and mutual.Even their nicknames, Gigi and Bibi, suggest that their love is predestined, and they quickly develop an intense and serious relationship. But Gigi’s veneer of success is hiding a much darker secret; he is the leader of a notorious Brusselsgang responsible for a string of expertly executed, high-net-worth robberies. Managing to shield Bibi from his illicit activities, Gigi begins to wonder what another life might look like, but is he willing to risk losing her love for one final score?

Although the film is squarely focused on the relationship between the two lovers, Racer and the Jailbird fleshes out theworld they live in – Gigi’s crew of childhood friends who test his loyalty, and Bibi’s close relationship with her family whoonly want her to be happy. The couple both feel conflicted by their responsibilities outside the relationship, and in truemelodramatic fashion, this becomes a story about making the ultimate sacrifice for love.

First Reformed Fri 27 July – Thu 2 August

Paul Schrader has built his career both as ascreenwriter (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) and director(American Gigolo, Dog Eat Dog) exploring thedarker side of human emotions. His latest film is no exception, and First Reformed sees him returning to a subject he knows well: the strictCalvinist Christian Reformed Church, which wasthe religion of his childhood.

Ethan Hawke plays Reverend Toller, a former military chaplain who now leads a small congregation in Upstate New York. Grieving thedeath of his son, Toller is suffering a crisis of faith. His beliefs are further tested when he meets Mary(Amanda Seyfried), a pregnant woman who askshim to speak to her depressed, activist husbandMichael (Philip Ettinger). Toller soon learns thatMichael is in favour of aborting the child becausehe’s convinced the planet will soon be destroyedby powerful corporations fatally polluting the environment. When a tragedy befalls the expectant couple, Toller undertakes an investigationwhich will expose difficult truths both for his own spirituality and for the local community.

The result is one of Schrader’s most complex andrich works in decades. This intelligent thriller ismore than a look back at Schrader's background;it is also rooted in the present in ways that willsurprise and perhaps shock. Directing with consummate control and simplicity, Schrader has composed a film of classic rigour and statelygrace, where undercurrents of uncontrollableemotions threaten to break apart an orderly life.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Fri 3 – Thu 16 August

It was an unbelievable ten years ago when we first experiencedthe pure joy of Meryl Streep performing Abba hits on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi. This summer, we’ve been invited back for the brand new all-singing, all-dancing (and superbly titled!) sequel. With new director and screenwriter OlParker (the writer behind the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films),this is real sunshine cinema and is sure to leave you tappingyour toes.

Part sequel and part prequel, the story picks up after the end of the last film, with Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) expecting herfirst child. As she comes to terms with this huge change, shelearns all about her mother Donna’s (Streep) past and how shemet the three men who may or may not be her biological father.Whizzing back to 1979, we see Donna as a young woman finding her feet, played by Downton Abbey's Lily James (lastseen at DCA in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society). There is so much fun to be had watching younger versions of the key players like Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth andJulie Walters, all in 1970s fashion. Meanwhile, in the present, as everyone heads back to the island, Sophie is confronted withan unexpected visitor; her glamourous estranged grandmother, played by none other than Cher!

Come join us for the perfect summer cocktail of sun, sea andScandinavian pop songs!

Summer 1993Estiu 1993Fri 27 July – Thu 2 August

Bereavement is seen through the eyes of a six-year-old girl in this assured, visually arresting debut from Catalan filmmakerCarla Simón. A delicate and dreamlike autobiographical drama, written and directed by Simón, it walked away with theBest First Feature at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and Best New Director at the Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of theOscars.

Following the death of both her parents, six-year-old Frida (Laia Artigas) leaves Barcelona and her beloved grandparentsfor the countryside where she will now live with her uncle Esteve (David Verdaguer) and aunt Marga (Bruna Cusí). Exploring an unfamiliar and alienating rural world, she gradually gets toknow her new ‘parents’ and their three-year-old daughter Anna (Paula Robles), but is still burdened by the trauma of herprofound and confusing loss, which as a young child she has no idea how to process. Frida struggles to settle into thenew family dynamic, despite the best efforts of those around her.

Beautifully crafted, Summer 1993 establishes an evocative sense of place and time, and that the film draws on Simón’spersonal recollections can be sensed in every convincingly imagined frame. But it’s nonetheless completely clear-eyedand unsentimental, aided by a truly extraordinary performance from Laia Artigas as the confused young Frida, her eyesfull of emotion. Lyrical, poetic and sensitive, it’s a distinctive and very impressive debut.

The Apparition L’Apparition Fri 3 – Thu 9 August

Xavier Giannoli (Marguerite) tackles the difficultsubject of faith with his new film The Apparition. On paper, the plot summary could be mistakenfor a Dan Brown novel, with its jaded journalist investigating a spiritual mystery, but in the hands of Giannoli and the always superb Vincent Lindon,it becomes a non-sensationalist story about trust, sacrifice and faith.

Jacques (Lindon) is a world weary journalist travelling back to his native France from a warzone in the Middle East. We quickly learn that he lost a colleague and good friend, who died at his side. Before he even has time to processthe trauma, Jacques is contacted by the Vatican, who invite him to Rome for a special mission.Jacques learns that an 18-year-old girl namedAnna (Galatéa Bellugi) claims to have seen an‘apparition’ of the Virgin Mary outside her village.Since then, the village has become a place of pilgrimage where worshippers travel from aroundthe world to visit the miracle in person. Jacquesis tasked with investigating whether such anevent occurred, or if Anna has made the story up.

While the film hints that local church officials maybe exploiting the situation, the story concentratesprimarily on Jacques’ growing friendship with the unassuming young woman at the heart of thecontroversy. Disarmed by her sincerity, his doggedsearch for concrete proof is soon complicated byhis own conflicted feelings about destiny, beliefand goodness. Lindon brings a wonderful gravitasto this struggle and he is more than matched by newcomer Bellugi, who offers a nuanced performance as a sheltered young woman holding on to a few too many secrets and sufferingthe consequences.

Apostasy Mon 13 – Thu 16 August

Written and directed by Dan Kokotajlo, this fresh, unadornedfirst feature carries an unmistakable note of authenticity fromits very first scene, with the film's strength and power lying inits directness.

Apostasy depicts the growing rift in a family – a mother andtwo daughters – who are rigorously devoted to their religion.Raised in The Truth, as the faith is known to Jehovah's Witnesses, teenage sisters Alex and Louisa take their religiousmission door-to-door amongst a large Pakistani community inGreater Manchester. It comes as a shock to both Alex (MollyWright) and the girls' equally devout mother, Ivanna (SiobhanFinneran), when Louisa (Sacha Parkinson) starts seeing a non-believer, pushing back against her family’s conservativevalues. The Elders of the church watch carefully and Louisa is condemned for having lost her way. At the same time, Alexis courted by a new arrival, a committed Elder who receivesthe blessing of her mother and the community alike. Whattranspires from there is far from predictable, and the outcomestretches the young women's faith to breaking point. As thesisters embark on their own paths, Ivanna's love and loyaltiesare torn.

Kokotajlo (a former Jehovah’s Witness himself) employs a precise visual style to evoke the quiet, internal world of religious believers who find themselves in, but not part of, the wider world. Expertly guiding us through the emotionaldepths of a family whose hearts are fractured by colliding beliefs, the result marks the arrival of a fine new talent.

Hearts Beat Loud Fri 17 – Thu 23 August

Earlier this year Lady Bird gave us one take on the trials andtribulations of leaving home. Hearts Beat Loud also looks at theparent/child relationship, but this time from the perspective of a single father and his daughter whose time has come to fly the nest.

Frank (Parks and Recreation’sNick Offerman) owns an oldschool record store in Brooklyn and Sam (Kiersey Clemons) ismonths away from heading off to UCLA, but every week thepair still gets together for family jam sessions. When a rent-hikethreatens his business, Frank finds himself desperately in needof a new career path. The prospect of saying goodbye to boththe store and his beloved daughter is proving tough, so afterthey come up with a particularly catchy song, Frank comes upwith an idea he hopes will solve his problems; they should starta band! As Sam struggles to balance her studies, her buddingromance with Rose (Sasha Lane) and her father’s sudden intense interest in creating music together, the father/daughterrelationship begins to crack. And when that catchy song goesviral, they are both forced to make some major life decisions.

Offerman and Clemons have a lovely authentic rapport and thesupporting cast – which includes Ted Danson, Toni Collette andBlythe Danner – helps to elevate this film from easy listening tosomething with much more traction. Under The Tree Undir trénu Fri 10 – Thu 16 August

Family drama and black comedy mix in a distinctiveand freewheeling picture of suburban warfare. Icelandic director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson, whose film Either Waywas remade by David Gordon Green as Prince Avalanche, brings a wrysensibility to the lives of two families living in near-identical cube houses.

Accused of adultery by his ex-fiancée, Atli (SteinþórHróar Steinþórsson) is promptly turfed out andforced to move back in with his parents. While hefights for custody of his four-year-old-daughter, he becomes drawn into a bitter dispute betweenhis parents and their neighbours over a tree whichstraddles their two properties. One side sees it as a beautiful piece of nature; the other, an obstructionto sunbathing. What follows is an acute socialdrama, involving security cameras, chainsaws andpet abduction – in short a dark comedy alive to thehilarious pettiness of any two sides unwilling toback down.

Under The Tree is a satire which only the Icelandiccould make. Sigurðsson brings a human touch tooften unlikeable characters, never shying away fromthe bizarre blend of judgement and kindness whichexists in suburban communities.Under The Treeis definitely a unique creation, where awkward observational humour is never far from hand.

Christopher RobinFri 17 – Thu 23 August

Disney have been busy revamping their classic animations for live action over the past few years to great success, withthe likes of The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, but rather than a straightforward adaptation of a previous film,Christopher Robin comes with a twist: the titular character is all grown up and it’s up to Winnie the Pooh and the gang tobring some wonder and imagination back into his life.

Winnie the Pooh’s best friend Christopher Robin (EwanMcGregor) is struggling to balance working life with spending time with his wife Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) anddaughter Madeline (Bronte Carmichael). Suddenly, when he is least expecting it, he is reunited with a certain honey-lovingstuffed bear who urges him to venture once again into the idyllic Hundred Acre Wood. Things don’t go exactly accordingto plan, and soon, Pooh and his friends leave the forest and find themselves in bustling London. With Jim Cummings(who’s voiced Pooh for Disney since 1988) returning as the iconic bear, as well as Tigger, we feel just like Christopher Robinmeeting our old friends again.

Despite looking a little tattered, the whole gang is back, with some spiffy new voice actors to boot, from Piglet (Nick Mohammed) and Rabbit (Peter Capaldi) to Owl (Toby Jones) and everyone’s favourite down in the dumps donkey, Eeyore (Brad Garrett). We defy you not to be charmed by Pooh and his friends as they remind Christopher Robin of the adventures they had together, and the importance of having fun.

Le Crime de Monsieur Lange Sun 12 August, 15:15

In the second half of the 1930s the French director JeanRenoir, one of the true masters of the medium, enteredhis most fertile period. In just five years he made eightgreat films. The most famous of these, Grand Illusion andThe Rules of the Game, are genuine masterpieces, butthe lesser-known The Crime of Monsieur Lange is everybit as good.

Made in the run-up to the election of the left-wing Popular Front, Monsieur Lange clearly betrays Renoir’scommunist sympathies. It depicts the employees of asmall publishing firm who form a successful collectivewhen their oppressive boss disappears. However, whenhe suddenly returns things take a dramatic turn. As always with Renoir it is his sympathy for his characters(even the boss) and his understanding of human fallibilitythat impresses. Warm, breezy, but never sentimental, thisis political filmmaking with a heart and a sense of humour.

Pandora’s Box Sat 21 July, 14:30

One of the latest and greatest of all silent films, Georg Wilhelm Pabst’s Pandora’s Boxwas based on a pair of controversial fin de siècle plays by Frank Wedekind. Thestory follows Lulu, an enigmatic and arguably amoraldancer, and her adventures with lovers of both sexes, her conviction for murder, her escape from prison, andher tragic death at the hands of Jack the Ripper.

Poised somewhere between the German expressionismof the early 20s and unflinching realism, Pabst’s film is avisual marvel. But what really distinguishes it is LouiseBrooks’ portrayal of Lulu. Brooks, like her character, wasbeautiful, keenly intelligent, and petulant, and she had the perfect combination of raw sexuality and seeminglyunflappable innocence that the part demanded. This isone of the great screen performances and it demands tobe seen in this new restoration with an orchestral score by the late, great film composer Peer Raben.

VertigoSat 28 July – Wed 1 August

In 2012 Vertigowas voted the greatest film ever made by Sight and Soundmagazine's panel of 900 filmmakers and critics. This level of critical adulation is, however, a relatively recent development. Upon its initial release, Vertigowas notespecially well-loved. Many thought the plot, which involves doppelgangers, reincarnation, l'amour fou and a detectivewith a fear of falling was nonsensical. They failed to see that Vertigowas never intended to be just another exercise insuspense and that Hitchcock had made a leap from master craftsman to artist.

Thankfully, his cast and crewcertainly were on the samewavelength. Everything about the film, from the careful use of colour, to the meticulous framing and camerawork, to EdithHead’s costumes, to the performances, contributes to its exploration of identity, obsession, jealousy, guilt and redemption.Special mention must go to Bernard Herrmann’s score, which may be the finest in all cinema, and which makes apt nods to Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde.

It is a defiantly strange, daringly enigmatic work that has a fascination all of its own. Each subsequent viewing revealssomething new, but somehow you never get to the bottom of it. It is a film about obsession that makes you become obsessed with it. If that isn't genius, we don’t know what is.

Dir: Alfred Hitchcock USA 1959 / 2h8m / PGCiné Sunday Sun 19 August, 11:00

Alfred Hitchcock

Very few filmmakers become household names, but Alfred Hitchcock is deservedly one of them. A truegenius of cinema, Hitchcock’s films were deliriously entertaining, but they also had unfathomable hiddendepths. We’re marking the 60th anniversary of his most celebrated work, Vertigo, with a short season ofsome of his finest films.

The Lady Vanishes

The Lady Vanishes Sat 4 August, 16:45

Arguably the greatest comedy thriller ever made,The Lady Vanishes is the jewel in the crown ofHitchcock’s early British period. The story is simple: an elderly woman vanishes without a trace on a train in the Balkans on the eve of theSecond World War and a rag-tag gang of fellowpassengers, led by Michael Redgrave and Margaret Lockwood, try to find her; but the execution is breathtaking.

In a dizzying, near-perfect ninety minutes Hitchcock and screenwriters Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder manage to pack in murder, mystery, espionage, romance, and some of the wittiest banter ever put on film.

Shadow of A Doubt Sun 5 August, 15:30

Hitchcock’s personal favourite amongst his ownfilms, and it is not hard to see why. Bored teenagerCharlie (the incomparable Teresa Wright) longs forsome excitement in her sleepy Californian town, and her prayers are answered by the arrival of herlong-lost Uncle and namesake. Only Uncle Charlie, played with great charm and menace by JosephCotten, is also a serial killer known as the ‘MerryWidow Murderer’.

A dark, cynical, and often mordantly funny look at suburban America and the evil and hypocrisythat it hides, Shadow of a Doubt is nothing lessthan the spiritual ancestor of Blue Velvet.

Rebecca

Rear Window Sun 19 August, 15:30

Both a tightly-wound thriller about a housebound photographer whospies on his neighbours and convinces himself one of them is a murderer, and Hitchcock’s mostenjoyable deconstruction of his owncraft, Rear Window is an unequivocalmasterpiece which reminds us thatwatching films makes ‘peepingtoms’ out of us all.

Frenzy Wed 8 August, 20:45

This dark, mordantly funny story ofthe hunt for a serial killer proved tobe Hitchcock’s most controversialfilm. Critics baulked at the (now relatively tame) nudity and violence, and several prominent actors turneddown parts for fear of harming theircareers. Today, however, Frenzy isrightly viewed as Hitchcock’s finalmasterpiece.

Rebecca, Hitchcock’s only Best Picture winner, is one of his eeriestand most dream-like films. It is alsoperhaps his most beautiful. This new4K restoration showcases GeorgeBarnes’ Oscar winning photographyand the stunning Gothic sets. ButRebecca is also worth revisiting for the immaculate performances of Laurence Olivier as aristocraticwidower Maxim de Winter and JoanFontaine as the young woman whobecomes his second wife.

The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales Fri 3 – Thu 9 August

Audiences who remember the delightful Oscar-nominated Ernest et Célestine from a few years ago will be thrilled to see this latest offering from the samefilmmaking team. Taking three short tales about the misadventures of a group of farmyard animals, theyhave once again brought us some delightful characters– a fox that thinks it's a chicken, a pig that acts like astork, and a duck who wants to replace Santa Claus.

Basing the film on an original comic book by BenjaminRenner – who adapted his stories and also directs thefilm – the characters’ world is full of madcap slapstick, snappy dialogue and behaviour that is far from what we might expect of traditional farmyard animals. Wildand wacky, with cartoon mayhem reminiscent of classicHollywood animation, this is a fun-filled romp for all thefamily.

Yellow SubmarineSun 22 July, 11:00 & 18:00

Once upon a time – or maybe twice – there was an unearthlyparadise called Pepperland: 80,000 leagues under the sea it lay,a place where beauty, happiness, and music reigned supreme. But this peaceful harmony is shattered when the Blue Meaniesinvade with their army of storm bloopers, apple bonkers, snapping turtle turks, and the menacing flying glove in an attempt to stop the music and drain Pepperland of all colourand hope. So it’s The Beatles to the rescue, as our animatedheroes team up with Young Fred and the Nowhere Man andjourney across seven seas to free Sgt Pepper’s Lonely HeartsClub Band, make peace with the Meanies, and restore music, colour, and love to the world.

The Beatles’ legendary animated hit film returns to cinemas this summer! This momentous big-screen revival will givegenerations of audiences the golden opportunity to revisit Pepperland for the 50th anniversary of the film’s original release. An exuberant fusion of music, film and art, Yellow Submarine is a landmark cinematic experience that is as fun and vibrant now as it was in 1968.

Coming Soon

Spike Lee is back with BlacKkKlansman, a loud, proud satirical comedy inspired by the true story of a black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in 1970s Colorado. Co-written and directed byLee, produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out) and starring Hollywood hot properties David John Washingtonand Adam Driver, this is one of 2018’s big must-sees.

Cold War won Paweł Pawlikowski the Cannes Film Festival Best Director prize this year, and it’s easyto see why. Set in 1950s Poland and loosely based on the lives of Pawlikowski’s parents, it tells an impossible love story that’s tragic, passionate and haunting in turn.

Newly-honoured Dame Emma Thompson gives one of her most sensitive and moving performancesto date in The Children Act. Adapted from Ian McEwan’s novel, the film follows a High Court judge as she rules in the case of a teenager with leukaemia who refuses a blood transfusion on religiousgrounds.

Winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize, The Miseducation of Cameron Poststars Chloë Grace Moretz as an orphaned teenager sent to a conversion camp to ‘pray away the gay’. A refreshingly reserved and compassionate LGBT coming-of-age tale.
