I’m delighted to congratulate the outstanding achievements of new members, those who have completed their exams and prize winners. I well understand how getting to this point has taken weeks, months and years of hard work and dedication.

We are also celebrating those who have been CIMA members for ten, twenty, thirty and forty years. They have given outstanding service and remain highly valued advocates for our profession and organisation.

At the start of 2017, CIMA and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) came together to create the world’s largest and most influential professional accountancy body - the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. It combines the strengths of both organisations, and represents more than 650,000 members and students.

CIMA itself was formed in 1919 and next year we celebrate our centenary. Our members and students are part of that long and proud tradition, and a global community made up of individuals who are recognised for their ability in business to create value and drive success. The world of finance is changing fast - this challenges us but also offers opportunities for individuals, businesses and organisations to prosper.

As management accountants, our roles matter. That is why, as CIMA President, it is my pleasure to congratulate new members, students and prize winners.

Let me take this opportunity to extend our warmest welcome to the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, the world’s largest and most influential professional body of accountants that represents 650,000 members and students across the globe.

We gather here today to celebrate, as today marks a new chapter in your career, and your life–for all the hard work and of course, perseverance that got you this far .Let us welcome you to the world of CGMAs. Holding the CGMA designation is only the beginning, as it will bring you more exquisite journey in the near future and beyond.

As a CGMA, your designation sets you apart from the rest. Chartered InstituteOf Management AccountantsThe Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), founded in 1919, is the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants, with members and students operating in 177 countries, working at the heart of business. CIMA members and students work in industry, commerce, the public sector and not-for-profit organisations. CIMA works closely with employers and sponsors leading-edge research, constantly updating its qualification, professional experience requirements and continuing professional development to ensure it remains the employers’ choice when recruiting financially-trained business leaders.

Membership in CIMA

There are two grades of membership within the Institute. These are Associates and Fellows. Associates are entitled to use the designatory letters ACMA, while Fellows are entitled to use the designatory letters FCMA.

In December 1995, the Privy Council granted qualified members of CIMA the right to use the individual description of Chartered Management Accountant. To qualify as a Chartered Management Accountant of the Institute, a combination of academic performance and practical experience is needed. After passing the finalexamination set by the Institute, and having gained a minimum of three years relevant practical experience plus having submitted a satisfactory Career Profile, a qualifying student is admitted as an Associate member. The three years of work experience consist of basic, core and supplementary experience, of which 18 months must be in the core area. For Fellow members, an additional three years of senior, strategic experience is required, usually at board level or reporting to that level.

Members of CIMA also receive the CGMA designation. However members of CPA Australia or CMA Canada who are elected to CIMA membership through the ‘preferred access’ route after 31 January 2012 are not eligible to use the CGMA designation.

Recognition by MIAAll CIMA members are eligible to apply for admission into the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) as CIMA is a recognised professional body listed under part II of the first schedule to the accountants act, 1967.

In Malaysia, the word ‘accountant’ is protected under the provisions of the act (sections 22 and 23), which states that no one can hold himself out or practise as an accountant unless he is registered as a member of MIA. Applications to be a member of MIA can be made online via the MIA website at www.mia.org.my
