Chile is the main Lithium productor in the world.

Companies Soquimich (SQM) and Chemetall (SCL) , product from Chilean salars, the

53% of worlwide Lithium and more 75% of Lithium used in batteries applications.

Marubeni is a world-class trader company and a global inversor in new energy

entrepeneurs in electric car industry.

Energy Center of Engineer Faculty, Universidad de Chile , is the choice windows to

lead this Country iniciative, using academic Chilean network(*), labs and scientifics

groups to support applied science focused in some niches of solutions to expand

the industrial business related to massive use of electric acumulators in electric

cars and other huge scale applications

The new energy paradigm industry

•PETROLEUM PRICES, DECLINATION OF RESERVES, SOCIOPOLITICAL FACTORS, ENVIRONMENT CO2

PROBLEMS, ARE MARKING THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF ICE (INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE)

BASE OF TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY.

•BATTERY USED IN ELECTRIC CARS IS A NEW INDUSTRIAL AREA WITH HUGE POTENTIAL OF GROWTH

IN NEXT YEARS. POTENTIAL OF THIS INDUSTRY IS IMPREDECTIBLE IN SAME WAY INTERNET WAS AT

EARLY 90`S.

•THE ACHILLES‘S HEEL OF THIS INDUSTRY IS TO RESOLVE THE CURRENTS PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED

TO ION-LITHIUM BATTERY IN ORDER TO REACH THE MINIMAL INDUSTRIAL GOALS TO EXPANSION ON

MARKET DEMAND.

• INDUSTRY ASSOCIATED WITH LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES FOR CARS WILL MOVE U.S. $ 25 BILLION BY

2014, ACCORDING TO RESEARCH FIRM FUJI-KEIZAI. THIS INDUSTRY INCLUDES THE VARIOUS

COMPONENTS AND SOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRODUCTION OF THESE

BATTERIES AND OF COURSE, THE SAME BATTERY MARKET.

•IT IS NO COINCIDENCE THAT THE NUMBER OF APPLIED RESEARCH PROJECTS IN THE WORLD OF

LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES, HAS GROWN OVER 200% LAST YEAR.

•CIL FORMATION OBJETIVES IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING OF NEW

PROFESSIONALS AND SPECIALISTS, AND GENERATING VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS, INCLUDING THE

POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING AN INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THESE TECHNOLOGIES IN CHILE.

The new energy paradigm industry

Main commercial problems to be resolved of Lithium-

Batteries for electric vehicles applications in next 5 years

Prices should be reduced from around US$ 1.000 /kWh to less US$

300/kWh

Pack size should reach about 40 kWh (double currently) to expand range

from 160 kms to 350 kms

Energy Density (Wh/kg) and Energy Volume (Wh/l) should be increase two

times in order to support new size in current EV.

Recharge time in a Quick Charge equipment should be less of 15 minutes,

considering new size requeriments. That mean battery should support over

400 amperes in charge process.

Cycle Life (80% DOD) should be over 1.000 cycles.

Security issues should be maintained under all mentioned requeriments

¡¡ URGENCE REQUEST OF DRIVERS (EV VENDORS )!!

Page 6: CIL English March 20111

But…

Generate contradictory scientific and technical problems:

Increase capacity v / s lower prices.

Increase charge speed but more life cycles.

Sizes reduction but more storage capacity.

Materials costs in batteries is an important externality.
