Steve Stride, Vice President, Chartered Institute of Housing Steve Stride is chief executive of east London housing association Poplar HARCA. He has worked in the housing sector for the whole of his professional career and was elected Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Housing in April 2013. Since joining Poplar HARCA in 1998 he has led a £1 billion regeneration programme to reshape the Poplar area of east London. With a team of more than 300 staff, he manages more than 9,000 homes and 12 community hubs and has developed partnerships across the private, public and third sectors to deliver award-winning services, facilities and amenities. Steve has always believed that people are the key to successful, sustainable regeneration and that residents must play a central role in the regeneration of their homes and the delivery of their services.
Lee McQueen, Managing Director, Raw Talent Academy Apprentice winner Lee McQueen launched Raw Talent Academy after growing frustrated by the lack of quality talent entering the sales industry. He spent over 2 years working with Lord Sugar before leaving to found the business in 2010 to encourage businesses to look at the wider pool of sales talent we have within the UK.
Dave Simmonds OBE, Chief Executive, Centre for Economic & Social Inclusion Dave Simmonds OBE is the Chief Executive of the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion – one of the leading research organisations on welfare and employment policy. He has been an advisor to the House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee, the OECD, and advised successive governments on policies for the unemployed. Dave worked at NCVO in the 1980’s and in the 1990’s he was the first England Director for the National Lottery Charities Board. Dave was awarded an OBE in the 2005 honours list.
Chan Kataria, Group Chief Executive, East Midlands Housing Group Chan Kataria is the Group Chief Executive of East Midlands Housing Group (EMHG) since 2004. With a turnover of £90m, EMHG manages over 17,000 homes and a significant care and support business. Prior to this Chan worked for various local, regional and national housing organisations. EMHG, a major developer in the East Midlands, has rural specialism and is a regional Help to Buy Agent.
Wendy Murphy, Director, Centre for Mentoring and Coaching Having enjoyed a varied housing career working for housing associations, local authorities and the Housing Corporation, Wendy now focuses on supporting individuals and organisations through coaching and mentoring development. Wendy has worked with Board Members, Executive teams and individuals at all levels to help them focus on the things that really make a difference and deliver outstanding results. Wendy is now a director of the Centre for Mentoring and Coaching, which works across all sectors with strong roots in the housing movement.

Kulbir Shergill, Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Genesis Housing Association Kulbir Shergill, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Genesis Housing Association has successfully helped to lead and influence attitudes and behaviours across the business to embed diversity as one of Genesis’ “golden threads”. The Company’s diversity work has been recognised through several high profile awards including Times Top 50 Places for Women to Work, Stonewall Top 100 Employers Equality Index and recently finalists in the National Business Awards under for its work on diversity.
Diane Bellinger, Chief Executive, Community Gateway Association Diane has been Chief Executive at Community Gateway Association since its creation in 2005, where she led the set-up of the first housing association based on the Community Gateway Model. Diane has since embedded a culture of empowerment and involvement for both colleagues and residents, creating a place that inspires all their people to develop and grow. In 2013 Gateway achieved 100% in their IiP Gold Standard re-assessment, and were 17th in the Sunday Times Top 100 not-for-profit companies to work for, a jump of 20 places from 2012. Prior to Gateway Diane was Chief Executive at Eastlands Homes, and other previous roles include director of operations and head of housing.
Liz Ralph, Learning & Development Business Partner, Community Gateway Association Liz has been L&D Business Partner at Community Gateway Association since June 2011. Responsible for leading L&D activity within the organisation Liz has developed the Purple Pathways Programme providing a framework for learning opportunities. The value of Purple Pathways has been recognised internally and externally within Gateways IiP & Customer Excellence accreditations and their Times 100 results, where Gateway were runner up in the special award category for L&D. Liz has specialised in L&D for over 12 years, previously working for Outsourcery, RBS and Iceland.
Yvonne Castle, Managing Director, YCChange A chartered accountant by profession with an MBA accreditation and over 23 years experience in the public and private sector (operating nationally and internationally) Yvonne offers a powerful blend of skills and experience that allow her to add real value in a broad range of roles within a diverse range of businesses. With excellent skills in change management underpinned by accreditations in PRINCE2 & Systems Thinking and a natural ability to motivate coach, influence and negotiate with a broad range of stakeholders, Yvonne has the capability to make a real difference to most organisations. A true entrepreneur with deep knowledge of working effectively within larger, complex more structured public sector environments.

Veronica Coatham, Interim Assessment Manager, Learning Team, Chartered Institute of Housing Veronica Coatham is a member of CIH Learn Board and is currently Interim Assessment Manager at CIH, working on the development of the new and improved online learning experience. She was Head of Division for Housing and Community Studies at Birmingham City University until July 2013. Prior to joining the University she worked mainly in the local authority housing sector holding a range of roles. Veronica is now an Education and Housing consultant.
Des Johnson, People Development Manager, Wakefield and District Housing Des has worked for Wakefield and District Housing for nearly five years. He is responsible for ensuring all WDH’s employees are developed in line with business needs and workforce planning requirements. This includes ensuring they have a diverse workforce to meet our strategic objectives and an apprenticeship programme is fundamental to achieving this.
Laura Matchett, Organisational Development Business Partner, Home Group Laura Matchett is an Occupational Psychologist and previous winner of the CIPD North East Newcomer of the Year Award. She uses her background in consultancy to design and deliver solutions which achieve tangible business results, balancing individual and broader organisational development. Laura has a particular interest in supporting colleagues to take the next step in their career.
Tony Williams, Executive Director of People, Orbit Group Tony Williams (FCIPD) has been the Executive Director of People at the Orbit Housing Group for five years and currently leads a transformation programme focussed on creating a ‘Great’ organisation capable of delivering its 2020 vision. His background is public (mainly) and private sectors. Highlights include being programme director of major Government change programmes in the Home Office and Prison Service and working with Boards and senior teams as an HR/OD consultant in both UK, Africa and Asia.
Tracy Tallant, Service Director, Human Resources, Wakefield and District Housing Tracy has worked in Human Resources for over 25 years and worked for Wakefield and District Housing for eight years. The role is responsible for the delivery of the highest standards of service to ensure that the company has the right skills, aptitudes and qualities in its employees.

Peter Bond (Rising Stars Winner 2013), Tenancy Management Officer / Board Member, Sanctuary Housing / South Liverpool Housing Group Peter Bond is the current Rising Stars winner and a Chartered Member of the CIH. He has worked as a Tenancy Management Officer since 2006 and his current employer is Sanctuary Housing. Peter is also a Board Member with South Liverpool Housing Group.
Craig Goldblatt, Speaker, Trainer & Coach, Craig Goldblatt For over a decade Craig has been delivering inspirational keynote presentations to audiences from around the world. His ability to challenge, rather than tell, audiences to be their very best and his motivational energy throughout this journey are what set Craig apart from other speakers. Put simply Craig inspires people to be better than they ever thought possible.
Lynn Jarvie, Tenant Academy Lead, Swindon Borough Council Lynn’s role is to manage Swindon Borough Council’s Tenant Academy which includes responsibility for our apprenticeship programme. She was involved in setting up the programme in 2011 when they employed the first apprentices. They have now put 12 people through Housing Apprenticeships and have just employed an additional eight apprentices. Lynn can honestly say it’s the most rewarding job she has ever done.
Richard Marsh, Employer Services Director, National Apprenticeship Service Richard manages the Employer Services division, at the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS). He is responsible for the quality of service offered by NAS to employers that have, or wish to have Apprentices. He has previously been worked as:
A training manager for the Volkswagen group, where he conducted an International training harmonisation project
A trainer at Vodafone UK where he introduced Modern Apprenticeships
A Sales trainer within the ‘travel’ sector.

In this interactive session, we will explore the benefits of developing a learning organisation through mentoring and coaching. Kulbir Shergill will talk about her experience in Genesis, particularly using mentoring and coaching to create a more diverse organisation where people take the lead on their own learning. Wendy Murphy will talk about the experience of the Centre for Mentoring in team situations and how a combination of team development and individual coaching can be the breakthrough to creating a learning organisation.

Learning & development has the greatest impact when it’s truly integrated into the business… but that’s easier said than done, especially within times of change, growth and tightening purse strings! During this session we will explore the approach taken by Gateway to ensure learning really is at the heart of what they do, and how they have secured an increase of over 75% in their training budgets over the past 2 years through stakeholder involvement & buy-in.

Yvonne will share with you a business tool to help you successfully manage change in your organisation that really makes an impact. The 6P™ Model for Business Excellence will give you a holistic view of embedding change through looking both strategically and operationally at your business.
The session will also have a focus on people and will outline how to find out if your staff with thrive through change, or despair and how to manage this to add value to the bottom line in your business

B1. Creating a successful apprenticeship scheme in your organisation
Des Johnson, People Development Manager and Tracy Tallant, Service Director, Wakefield and District Housing
The workshop will look at how WDH’s apprenticeship programme fits into its overall approach of developing young people to create confident communities and to be our future leaders. Des and Tracy will outline their apprenticeship strategy and how they have reviewed and continually improved the apprenticeship programme, since it started in 2005, to ensure they provide an excellent development opportunity and career path for young people in the Wakefield District.
B2. Housing managers and leaders: the next generation! How to develop those who will deliver your organisation’s culture and strategy.
Laura Matchett, Organisational Development Business Partner, Home Group
In this case study based session, Laura will share insights and learning from Home Group’s Leadership Pathways Programmes, which aim to develop the next generation of managers and leaders. These programmes were an integral part of Home Group’s submission for the 2013 Housing Heroes HR Team of the Year Award, which was nominated as a finalist. This session will help participants develop practical and sustainable approaches to identifying and developing future talent.
