Oettinger Davidoff AG presentó los nue-vos estudios artísticos del programa Da-vidoff International Art Residency. Asi-mismo, durante la feria de arte Art Basel celebrada en Miami Beach, anunció el nombre del próximo artista dominicano que participará en la Art Residency y del nuevo beneficiario de las becas Art Grants. Estos programas forman parte de la Davidoff Art Initiative, presentada en 2012 y a través de la cual Davidoff pretende realizar una contribución dura-dera al mundo del arte contemporáneo, en particular, de la República Domini-cana y el Caribe, así como promover el compromiso cultural entre la región del Caribe y el resto del mundo.Davidoff Cigars, en calidad de socio colaborador de Art Basel por tercer año consecutivo, ha gestionado un espacio VIP en la sala Collectors Lounge y otro en el Jardín Bótanico.

NUEVOS ESTUDIOS ARTÍSTICOSPARA LA DAVIDOFF INTERNATIONAL ART RESIDENCYEn colaboración con la Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavón, la Internatio-

nal Art Residency acogerá a los cinco primeros artistas internacionales en las recién construidas instalaciones de la residencia en La Romana, República Dominicana, entre el 18 de enero y el 5 de abril de 2015. Estos trabajarán en los nuevos estudios artísticos diseñados a medida por Adolfo Despradel, director de Planificación y Diseño de Costa-sur Dominicana S.A., en la Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavón, la institución líder del país en formación artística y de diseño. La maqueta de los nuevos estudios se expuso en la sala Davidoff Cigars Lounge del Jardín Botánico de Art Basel en Miami Beach.Los cinco artistas del grupo inaugural, propuestos por una red mundial de profesionales del arte y seleccionados por el Consejo Asesor Internacional, representan una variada gama de prác-ticas y trayectorias artísticas. Compar-ten un profundo interés en participar del tejido social y cultural de la Repú-blica Dominicana.Estos cinco artistas son: Alia Farid (nacida en 1985, Kuwait/Puerto Rico), Nuria Montiel (nacida en 1982, Ciudad de

México, México), Cathleen Mooses (naci-da en 1982, Chicago, IL), Mathilde Rosier (nacida en 1973, París, Francia) y Sole-dad Salamé (nacida en 1954, Santiago, Chile). Además de continuar trabajando en sus propias obras, durante la estancia los artistas tendrán la oportunidad de familiarizarse con la comunidad cultu-ral dominicana, así como de conocer a alumnos y residentes de Altos de Cha-vón y áreas adyacentes.

DAVIDOFF ART RESIDENCYEN PEKÍN, CHINAEngel Leonardo será el sexto artista que participará en el programa de la Art Residency. Se alojará en la Red Gate Gallery Residency de Pekín, China, entre el 1 de mayo y el 30 de junio de 2015. La obra de Engel Leonardo (nacido en 1977, Baní, República Dominicana) abarca la escultura, la instalación, intervenciones en ubicaciones específicas y el arte en-contrado, a través de los cuales pretende abordar temas relacionados con el cam-bio climático, la naturaleza, la artesanía tradicional, la arquitectura y la cultura popular del Caribe.

Oettinger Davidoff AG presented the new artist studios for the Davidoff Interna-tional Art Residency and announced during Art Basel in Miami Beach the next Dominican artist to take part in the Art Residency and a new recipient of Art Grants. These programs are part of the Davidoff Art Initiative, which was laun-ched in 2012 with the mission of suppor-ting contemporary art and artists in the Caribbean and Dominican Republic and fostering cultural engagement between the Caribbean region and the rest of the world.As Associate Partner of Art Basel for the third consecutive year, Davidoff Cigars operated a VIP hospitality lounge in the Collectors Lounge as well as an outdoor lounge in the Botanical Garden.

NEW ARTIST STUDIOS FOR THE DAVI-DOFF INTERNATIONAL ART RESIDENCYIn collaboration with Altos de Chavón School of Design, the International Art Residency will host the first five interna-tional artists at the newly built residency facilities in La Romana, Dominican Re-public, from January 18 to April 5, 2015. They will work in new, custom-built artist studios designed by Adolfo Despradel, Director of Planning and Design, Costa-sur Dominicana S.A. at Altos de Chavón School of Design, the country’s leading institution for art and design education. The maquette of the new studios was on view in the Davidoff Cigars Lounge in the Botanical Garden at Art Basel in Miami Beach.Nominated by a global network of

art professionals and selected by the International Advisory Council, the five artists in the inaugural group represent a diverse range of artistic practices and backgrounds. They are deeply interested in engaging with the social and cultural fabric of the Dominican Republic.The five artists are: Alia Farid (b. 1985, Kuwait/Puerto Rico), Nuria Montiel (b. 1982, Mexico City, Mexico), Cathleen Mooses (b. 1982, Chicago, IL), Mathilde Rosier (b. 1973, Paris, France), and So-ledad Salamé (b. 1954, Santiago, Chile). DAVIDOFF ART RESIDENCYIN BEIJING, CHINAEngel Leonardo will be the sixth artist to take part in the Art Residency. He will be in residence at the Red Gate Gallery Residency in Beijing, China, from May 1 through June 30, 2015. Engel Leonar-do (b. 1977, Baní, Dominican Republic) works across sculpture, installation, site-specific interventions and ready-mades to address issues related to climate change, nature, traditional crafts, architecture and popular culture of the Caribbean.

El visionario y emprendedor empresario del tabaco, Litto Gómez, fue el encargado de recibirnos personalmente en la impresionante plan-tación de tabaco que tiene La Flor Dominicana en la comunidad de La Canela, en la ciudad de Santiago, República Dominicana, cuna del mejor tabaco del mundo.Durante nuestro recorri-do por la plantación, Litto nos dijo: “En 1997 hicimos una decisión que cambia-ría para siempre nuestro destino y definió la iden-tidad de nuestra marca. Compramos nuestra propia granja. Al día de hoy, el tabaco cultivado en la finca de La Canela constituye la gran mayoría de todo el tabaco utilizado en nues-tros cigarros y es la base desde la que mezclamos con tabacos de alta calidad de todo el mundo”.Esta finca de 120 acres, es donde tiene lugar el inicio de los cigarros de La Flor Dominicana, bajo la tenue luz de los secaderos. En la plantación, crecen dife-rentes tipos de semillas, como la Piloto Cubano, que se utiliza como un exce-lente relleno; la Sumatra, una hoja dentada, difícil de producir y que se usa para capa. También se siembra el Corojo y el Ligero, que da nombre a la finca como “Hogar del Ligero”. Otra semilla que se siembra en la plantación es la llamada “LG Diez”, que crece a la sombra y se utiliza como envoltura.Visitar esta hermosa plantación fue una gran experiencia para el equi-po de la revista CIGARRO DOMINICANO, desde donde apreciamos como surge un cigarro premium hasta que llega a nuestras manos para ser degustado.

SANTIAGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLICThe visionary and entrepre-neur owner of La Flor Domi-nicana Cigars, Litto Gómez, was on hand to greet us personally at the stunning snuff planting that has at La Canela village in Santia-go city, Dominican Republic, home of the best snuff in the world.During our tour into the farm, Litto said to us: “In 1997 we made a decision that would forever chan-ge our fate and define the identity of our brand. We purchased our own farm. To this day the tobacco grown in our farm in La Canela makes up a great majority of all the tobacco used in our cigars and is the base from which we blend with high quality tobaccos from around the world”.In this farm of 120-acre is where the cigars start, in the dim light of the curing barns.
