Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 12, 2018

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the

bread that came down from heaven.” [John 6: 41]

Every experience of faith formation calls us deeper into the

life of the Spirit. Our faith is constantly being challenged to

deepen our trust in God and allow us to be fed by His love. In

the first reading from last week and in the first reading this

week, the Chosen People and the prophet are belly-aching that

life is just too difficult. But they hang in there because God

comes to them to feed them and sustain their journey. In the

“Bread of Life” discourse, John the Evangelist shows his com-

munity how to see Christ present among them through the bread

that they ritually shared as Eucharist. Christ became truly pre-

sent when his disciples made their bodies his own, when they

followed his commands and example to continue his ministry

through them. This did not happen immediately but through pro-

cess of faith formation that tested and stretched them.

As we look at the development of Church teaching in on-

going revelation, believers continue to “hang-in there” in a pro-

found dialogue that is able to move beyond “murmuring” to hold

the tension as human understanding grows in trust of God. Just

as the Church grew in understanding the dignity of every life

made in the image of God, that this applied to slaves as well as

“freed” people, so reflection on the role of women changed for

their greater participation in leadership, and now this month the

dignity of human life includes even those convicted of capital

crimes. Pope Francis has articulated that killing people who

have killed people to punish them is wrong, because all life is

sacred. This will take some time to absorb and nuance, just as

we try to absorb and nuance what it means for Christ to be truly

present with us in the Eucharist. John’s chapter 6 is an exercise

in faith formation that is on-going.

Questions for the week: Can you name some polar izing is-

sues that no longer matter? What is the value of holding our dif-

ferences in tension while we still disagree about the truth of any-

thing?

Your Pastor, Fr. Bob

Domingo Diecinueve en el Tiempo Ordinario

12 de Agosto, 2018

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?

With silver bells, and cockle shells, and pretty maids in a row.

What a wonderful garden God has given us in the grounds surround-

ing our church. Yet, what “sweet Mary” may have planted years ago has now become overgrown in many places around the church, office

and rectory. Joe Woodruff is our grounds-keeper, a steward in the tradition of the best of St. Joseph who has committed himself to phys-

ically care for the church. He has a wonderful vision for how we can take care of these beautiful grounds together. “Two by Two” people are asking Joe for a corner or a little piece of the action so that they

can trim, weed, cut and tender a special part of the garden. Grab a buddy and see what you can do! Call Joe, 912-337-5917 or email him

at [email protected] .

cer! Llama a Joe, 912-337-5917 o mándale un email a hjoe-

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leader-ship training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

Baptismal Womb of the Church

Happy is she who bore the Son of God. Still happier are those who hear God’s word and

keep it!

Today’s solemnity is for all of us, because Mary has accomplished what the Church hopes and

expects to have happen to us, too. As Jesus was born of sinless Mary, so we are born anew, sinless from the womb of the Church in baptism. The Lord God’s promise to us will be ful-filled. For this, we too can justly proclaim the greatness of the Lord who has looked upon

his lowly servants and raised them up!

levantado!

PAX CHRISTI – the Catholic Peace Movement: Information night at the church on Monday, August 13, this week at 6:15 in the conference room. Long over-due, this group is not a club or an institution but a process, a movement that often meets in peo-ple’s homes. The Peace Movement is just that, a movement of normal healthy people, who work, study, pray, and act for peace in the world. If you are interested, either let FB know [ [email protected] & 478-284-5235], or just show up and see what to do next. There will be a presenta-tion and handouts for basic information. “Come and see.”

Word from Pope Francis

“A God who draws near out of love, walks with His people, and this walk comes to an unimaginable point. We could never have imagined that the same Lord would become one of us and walk with us, be present with us, present in His Church, present in the Eucha-rist, present in His word, present in the poor, He is present walking with us. And this is closeness: the shepherd close to his flock, close to his sheep, whom he knows, one by one.”

Stewardship is a way of life: “where one receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a re-sponsible and accountable manner, shares them in jus-tice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord.” THANK YOU, you who have been faithful to Mass this summer. Your attitude of gratitude is at the heart of stewardship!
