Live from GISD, it’s Schoolnet Learning! Will you take the online SNL course or the face-to-face course? Learners in the online course have the opportunity to work and learn at their own pace, replay videos and instructions as often as needed, and still be able to collaborate in a forum with other learners.
Whether in the online course or during a face-to-face session, core content, LOTE, ESL, and Tech Apps teachers will enjoy a few laughs while exploring our new curriculum system. Please register for one of the learning sessions at: http://gisdprofessionallearning2015.sched.org/
Are you interested in attending the online SNL course? Sign up under the June 8th option, but online course participants can work on the course any time from anywhere over the summer.

• Accepts explanations that have nojustification
• Neglects to solicit students' explanations• Introduces unrelated concepts or skills
Elaborate
• Expects students to use formal labels, definitions and explanations providedpreviously
• Encourages students to apply or extendconcepts and skills in new situations
• Reminds students of alternate explanations• Refers students to existing data and

Curriculum Matrix
AVID, Fundamental 5, Springboard, and
Marzano. What do these initiatives have in
common? Quite a bit, actually! And now
there’s a document to help teachers make
the connection. The Curriculum Matrix
spells it all out!
The purpose of the matrix is to:
Fundamental 5 Marzano 9 SpringBoard AVID
Provide teachers with a side by side comparison of district initiatives, which include Fundamental 5, AVID, Marzano strategies andSpringBoard
Show commonalities between all of these research-based strategies
Illustrate how these each can fit into lesson planning and instruction
The curriculum matrix provides the purpose of each initiative and, it alsoprovides an example of the lesson objective, commonly used instructional
strategies and lists important skills necessary for student success. As you lookover the matrix, consider how many of the same proven strategies fit under thedifferent initiatives. These are strategies many of our teachers are already using!
The goal of this matrix is to be a useful, easy reference tool. Next time you'relesson planning and need a strategy or activity, use the curriculum matrix to
guide you!

ABYDOS Three Week Institute
What people are saying about Abydos…
What a thrill to graduate from the Abydos Three Week Institute! Although there is a lot to "unpack" in terms of ideas and concepts, the experience of the Institute itself was pretty wonderful! Kudos to the organizers!
During the institute, teachers worked in small groups when not writing on their own. “I like the atmosphere created in this room – collaborative, professional and inquisitive,” Michelle Grant-Arastu said.
“This class is highly engaging because I feel like I am learning, and it is worth my time,” she added. “My students will benefit from my time spent here. Most importantly, this course and its presenters coincide with my beliefs about what constitutes great writing instruction – real writing that prepares kids for ‘the test,’ but, most importantly, for college and beyond.”
“I will never be the same teacher thanks to Abydos,” said Kennedy Elementary teacher Frances Martinez. “Anybody can take the Abydos training and learn more about the process of writing and get a more holistic approach to helping their students become better writers.”
“I highly recommended that every teacher attend this training,” said Thomas Middle School teacher LaKia Jackson, who attended the institute last summer. “It totally transformed how I think about writing and how I think about teaching.”

Beaver MST and Watson MST held their 4th annual DimensionU Tournament this May. Students from both schools in grades three - five competed virtually for the Math and Literacy Championship! Students played DimensionU all year either on campus or at home to prepare for this event.
DimensionU hosts engaging and interactive multiplayer video games that focus on core skills in mathematics and literacy. The content aligns with the TEKS to support classroom instruction. The platform consists of four engaging, multiplayer games with access to curriculum in both Math and Literacy.
DimensionU is available for all students and teachers in GISD! Contact us if you need log-in information.
