Case Study – Holiday Inn Express at LaGuardia• Background: Holiday Inn Express at

LaGuardia Airport, an 85-room facility, turned to one of Con Edison’s Market Partners, Green Energy Solutions, to help get a handle on energy expenses. As this is a smaller hotel, they tend to use distributed systems that often run entirely on electricity, most commonly stand-alone Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs).

• Solution: The project included the installation of occupancy sensors, Energy Management Units (EMUs), and low voltage system interface in each of the 85 rooms to quickly get some of the energy spending under control. All the components of the energy management control system work together to effectively supply appropriate temperature to the room and lower temperature when rooms are not occupied. 7

Case Study: The Hertz Corporation

• Background: The Hertz Corporation wanted to realize significant energy savings and continue to improve the sustainability profile of its New York City car rental locations. Con Edison Market Partner, LVI Energy developed a plan to retrofit six out of the fourteen Manhattan Hertz locations with upgraded lighting systems.

• Solutions: The main focus of the project entailed a one-for-one replacement of fluorescent lamps and ballasts, incandescent exit signs and 400 watt MH dome fixtures in customer service and garage areas. Upgrading lighting fixtures to make energy-efficient improvements to its Hertz facilities, The Hertz Corporation has lowered its energy consumption 30 percent or approximately 203,000 kWh per year.

Case Study: FoodTown Supermarket

• Background: Management of the FoodTown in the Bronx did not have any immediate energy efficiency plans and was not privy to the various benefits a high-performance store offers. Con Edison Market Partner, Global Energy Efficiency Corp. (GEE) outlined the various cost-saving opportunities and benefits that could be realized with energy efficiency improvements.

• Solution: Since refrigeration and lighting make up over 50 percent of total energy use in an average supermarket, it was likely these systems were the best place to start looking for energy efficiency opportunities. Lighting upgrades include refrigerated case LED lighting and motion sensor package for installed overhead LED strips. Refrigeration upgrades include night covers, anti-sweat heater controls ECM open case and ECM walk-in box motors.
