It’s time to play!Why we should support our local independent toyshops
So which was better: the anticipation or the reality? Going into the toyshop as a child with a bit of birthday money, able to choose whatever you wanted, was wonderful. Think back and you’re probably smiling. Local toyshops are special places and we all remember those we knew and loved. So where can today’s children go for that same thrill of excitement and possibility? In the last year or so, Chorlton has lost Monkey Puzzle and Busy Bee Toys, while shops have also closed in Wilmslow, Bramhall, Poynton and Altrincham. South Manchester is down to its last two independents: Go Great in Burnage and Giddy Goat in Didsbury. Chorlton families will remember Amanda Alexander as co-owner of Monkey Puzzle. She left there two years ago to set up on her own at Giddy Goat. Selling toys is a serious business though: she faces stiff competition from supermarkets, bargain stores and huge online retailers.Looking around, it’s obvious how Giddy Goat and other small toyshops are different from the pile-it-high sector: toys here are chosen by people who care. Dolls and teddy bears picnic in the window, there are play tables with trains, craft kits, colourful books and must-haves for even the tiniest babies. The pocket money section is bustling with children spoilt for choice and parents assembling party
bags. “When I buy stock, I think of children opening presents at parties. I don’t want parents’ hearts sinking as they watch them open yet another piece of plastic tat. I stock toys I’d be happy to give as gifts, that I know children will love.”So what’s on this year’s Christmas list? “Dolls from Frozen in particular, but also the classics: Lego, anything with wheels, dinosaurs – and you can never have too many loom bands.”Amanda chats with every child in the shop: she tells a small boy that the mean-looking knight he’s just bought enjoys spiders on toast. His eyes shine. Shopping locally for toys is especially important: independent toyshops bring colour and fun to our high streets, and give happy memories to our children. Anonymous warehouses, brown boxes and shopping trolleys can’t do that and won’t even try. From September The PostBox Cafe is launching a new collection of exciting Terrace Markets.On the second Saturday of each month the market will feature a wide range of products, with something for everyone and all budgets. It should bring a real community feel to the area and will showcase the best of local and at-home businesses. A unique element will be the central community event - a series of workshops and how-to sessions, sharing the skills of
local traders and allowing you to get your hands dirty creating something beautiful, from garden planters through to pumpkin carving.On the fourth Saturday of each month a series of three markets will be held on rotation. How often are we told ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’? In this case, please do! The beautifully simple cover design really captures the essence of the book. This is a true life account about grief, obsession and nature, but above all about the magnificence of the Goshawk.Helen Macdonald was left heartbroken by her father’s death and desperately needed an outlet for her grief. Remembering a childhood obsession with the classic book by T H White, The Goshawk, she fulfils an earlier promise made to herself and purchases her own goshawk to train. We delve into a life where nothing
but single minded determination and obsession will do, isolating Macdonald from the ‘normal’ world and often sending her deeper into her grief. We are also treated to a biography of Macdonald’s inspiration, T H White, along the way. Far from a depressing read, this book will leave you feeling uplifted and full of wonder at our natural world. The new school year is fast approaching, which makes this a very timely read. We love it at the Bookshop as it’s the latest offering from the genius who gave us Mr Tiger Goes Wild. Most appropriate for 4+, the humour and pictures will be appreciated by older children and adults as well.Bobby really believes his teacher is a monster. She won’t even let him throw paper aeroplanes in class...how monstrous is that? One day Bobby’s worst nightmare comes true, he sees his teacher in the park. She still looks very monster-like to him.
When Bobby decides to help her with a tricky situation, the monster begins to turn human and he’s not so scared to go to school anymore. In a great twist Bobby’s teacher also begins to see he’s not such a little monster after all.This is a lovely take on the age old situation of not believing our teachers are actually human. This could be a useful book for all of those parents struggling to get their child used to a new teacher at the start of the school year.

Pavillion Cafe joins Tag! Scheme

Taize Service relaunches at St Clement’s Church
Age-Friendly Whalley Range encourages residents to cook for their neighbours
This Autumn St Clement’s Church is relaunching its Taize Service. Taize is a quiet and reflective style of prayer, meditation and worship. Its distinctiveness comes from melodic chanting. The chants are simple and easy to learn and the thirty minute service also includes readings, prayers and times of silence; a time for mediation and rest at the beginning of the week. It is open to all. Taize originates in an ecumenical community founded in the 1940s – both Protestant and Catholic. They opened their doors to visitors, particularly young people who wanted to spend time with the brothers to share in prayer and seek spiritual guidance. Today, over 100,000 people visit Taize every year and have brought the distinct style of worship experienced in Taize back to their home churches. The service will be held at a new time of 7.30pm on the fourth Sunday of each month (this term: 28th Sept, 26th Oct, 23rd Nov). St Clement’s is on the corner of Edge Lane and St Clement’s Road. All are most welcome.
Age-Friendly Whalley Range has been looking at ways to connect people who like to cook with older neighbours who could really benefit from a hot cooked meal.The simple idea is to sign up Whalley Range residents willing to cook an extra portion of their lunch or evening meal for a neighbour living close by. This could happen once a week or by arrangement between the cooks and diners.Cooks undergo a free DBS check and complete a short online food hygiene course – and are matched up with a local resident who signs up as a Diner. www.whalleyrangetastebuds.wordpress.com
Together Dementia SupportCan you offer support to a new dementia project?A new Community Interest Company is being set up in Manchester to offer more support and community-based activities for people living with dementia. and they’re looking for volunteers who will enjoy sharing time, skills and activities with them.Dementia (the most common form of which is Alzheimer’s Disease) can be a bewildering condition affecting personality, motivation and reasoning as much as memory. The person with the illness may lose confidence or try to maintain appearances, arguing that there is nothing wrong with them. Living alone with dementia can lead to neglect and social isolation whilst living, unsupported, with someone who has dementia can place a great strain upon family relationships.Having worked and studied in the field of dementia care for many years, I know how much self-esteem and wellbeing is boosted when people are included, celebrated and enabled to maintain skills and hobbies. Even as cognitive function is lost, people with dementia retain much of their individuality and ability to enjoy life.Together Dementia Support will run a weekly drop-in for carers and a varied programme of activity sessions for people with dementia. This could include indoor bowling,
walking, art & craft, baking, singing, poetry reading, or, perhaps a Men’s Group. There might even be counselling available for anyone who needs it. If you have time to spare and would like to get involved with this rewarding project, there is a range of volunteering opportunities available. Writing and producing a new play is always exciting, stressful, scary, amazing, stressful, daunting, wonderful, audacious and hard. But with Opening 1914 the scales are definitely (well at the moment anyway) tipping towards the ‘exciting’. It’s such a treat to be able to sit and write in the actual building where the play is set: to get our inspiration and like detectives find out about the real people who lived and worked in Chorlton 100 years ago and to imagine who and how they might have been involved in the opening of our library. Simon, the Edge’s composer and lyricist and I feel really privileged to get the opportunity to tell their story. To give a nod of appreciation to those that helped to create the Chorlton that we all know and
love today. But what were they up against?Travelling in Catalonia this year, we came across a beautiful building with a plaque, marking The Begur Theatre & Arts Centre. Not dissimilar to The Edge, set up by a family in the late 1800s and at the heart of the community for over 50 years, only to close at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. We are imagining what it was like for our characters, working towards the opening of a long-awaited library, against the backdrop of a world, just three months into the Great War.
As a piece of theatre Opening 1914 will be performed at both the library and at The Edge in November as part of the Chorlton Book Festival. It will be part factual, part imagined. So, to accompany the production we will create an exhibition to share all of our research workshops’ discoveries. To find out more please get in touch either by emailing or writing to me at The Edge.
Throughout August The Horse and Jockey has been busy raising money for The Christie. In less than a month they managed to raise over £500. However the benefits haven’t stopped at the money itself. The Jockey team have come together to run Tough Mudder in aid of the same charity. It’s brought the team together, training to complete the 12 mile military style obstacle course. Making money for charity helps build better communities. It has a positive effect on ‘cultural capital’ - a sense of one’s identity and an understanding of others.Chorlton is no stranger to charity. Yearly events like the Beech Road Family Fun Day help raise money
for the park and bring together the generous Beech Road Traders. The traders offer financial support, but also their time. From parents building new play areas for schools, (Brookburn Den), to festivals and events organised annually for the local area (Chorlton Book Festival), Chorlton is never short on people to help. We’re incredibly lucky to have so many people willing to give up their time and resources for charitable causes. The Horse and Jockey will be running the Tough Mudder challenge on the 14th September and are looking to raise money for The Christie Charity. The Christie help over 40,000 cancer patients each year and are a leading foundation in cancer treatment, research and education. 1. Starting at the bottom corners, stitch the sides of the body to the sides of the belly.
2. Sew up the opening between top corner of belly and top corner of body.
3. Turn your owl inside out through the opening at the bottom.
4. Bring the top corner down to form the beak and stitch in place.
5. Add beak and eyes (use felt, buttons, beads or whatever you have to hand).6. Fill your owl with stuffi ng and sew around the bottom to gather and close the opening.7. Cut the base shape from felt or cardboard covered in fabric, and stitch to the bottom.

They’ll look great around the house and they’re also perfect as favours or stocking fi llers. If you prefer, you can fi ll them with rice to make them into paperweights, stick some lavender inside to scent your drawers or turn them into a garland for a party!

This is an 8.5km (5¼ mile) circular cycle route from the car park at Sale Water Park. You can also start the route easily from Hawthorn Lane. It is a combination of canal towpath, quiet roads, park tracks and trails. There is one short busy road section where you can walk and push your bike if you prefer. Use the Ordnance Survey map 277 Manchester, although the Open Street Maps (online at www.openstreetmap.org/ or Go Maps!! App) is a lot clearer, particularly for details of the park tracks and trails. Starting from the car park at Sale Water Park, near Bowlers, cycle along the bottom of the lake with the motorway to your left, turn right at the end of the water and take the path across the river and carry on following the tram lines north. Take the path left underneath the canal and loop back on yourself to the left and go up to the canal towpath. Turn right onto the towpath and cycle down the canal for just over 2km, firstly going underneath the motorway and then start counting the bridges you go under and come
off at the third. This is the junction with Marsland Road; turn left onto Marsland and cycle for just over 1km to Walkden Gardens, on your left at the junction with Derbyshire Road.The Walkden Gardens are a wonderful space, see www.walkdengardens.co.uk, hidden within them are a number of individual gardens including the Dovecote Garden, Japanese Garden, mini Arboretum, and Theatre Lawn. This is a lovely space to spend some time, wander about, take a picnic. On leaving the gardens, turn left onto Derbyshire Road, heading north. At Northenden Road, do a dog-leg, turning left then almost immediately right into Worthington Park. Another lovely space to cycle round and enjoy. To leave the park, keep to the right and take the small footpath next to the toilets in the top right/north eastern corner of the park. Do another dog-leg, right then left this time onto Clarendon Crescent.
At the end of Clarendon turn left onto Dane Road and more or less straight away, turn right into Priory Gardens. Follow the track as it continues and then bends to the right. The motorway will be on your left, cross it at the bridge and descend down the path back to the starting point at Sale Water Park car park.
Fancy something longer?Try the 23km (14½ mile) out and back route on the Fallowfield Loop from opposite Morrisons to the Grade II listed Moravian Settlement. Go to the very end of the loop and carry on another cycle path past Write Robinson School, then Fairfield Railway station to reach the A635. Turn left onto the A645, right onto Fairfield Ave, and then left onto Sister’s Street, to travel back in time at the Moravian Settlement with its own Chapel, School, Burial Ground and cobbled streets. Apart from the 1 minute on the A635 at the very end, the whole route is off-road on dedicated cycle routes.

Something changes in September, both in the season and in our own internal body clocks. For me, being overly dramatic, the summer months, June to August, are always experienced with a distant anxiety – they will end; I won’t have made the most of it; I can’t bear the thought of short cold days…. But then September lands and I enter a settled comfort zone that signals the very start of autumn. Barbara Kingsolver, the American novelist, sums this feeling up beautifully in her book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: “I always harbour a childlike hope through the berry stained months of June and July that summer will be for keeps. But then a day comes in early fall to remind me why it should end after all. In September the quality of daylight shifts toward flirtation”. This year I am going to embrace September as a true bridge between summer and autumn by introducing some more salvias to my, already creaking, scheme. The huge genus salvia is a member of the mint family, lauded as a medicinal and healing plant since Roman times (Pliny the Elder writes significantly about sage in his encyclopaedic Natural History) and there are some beauties that will take you right up to the first frosts. One of my current favourite flower colours is pale yellow so I’m going to try salvia x jamensis ‘La Luna’ and ‘Moonlight Over Ashwood’ which not only has pale yellow flowers but yellow leaves too. Salvia x jamensis ‘Los Lirios’ has soft pink flowers held on dusty purple stems and if you want something quite unusual Salvia discolour is a fantastic specimen with indigo blue flowers closely encased in silvery, downy calyces. Some salvias can border on the tender but general advice seems to be to keep them in the ground and don’t prune until spring to protect the heart of the pant from frost. In the last year alone they have helped create a poetry trail around Chorlton (with Chorlton Arts Festival); hosted intergenerational writing events with Chorlton Good Neighbours; planted wild flowers in Chorlton’s Park and Water Park; held a community party for care home residents and baked lots of
biscuits as a Christmas treat for homeless people.Christine Taggart, the school’s Community and Marketing Officer says: “This sort of engagement helps the wider community, but it also helps our pupils learn about social responsibility, fairness and having pride in where they live. Now we are entering one of those long sustained periods of reflection on past events.It began earlier in the month with the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War and will rumble on with coverage of the first big battles of that conflict and conclude with stories of the first war time Christmas of 1914.And amongst all of that will be the 100th anniversary of the opening of our Library.It is a story I keep coming back to, not only because it says much about how Chorlton was changing in the last decades of the 19th century but also because it was opened just two months after the Great War began.*From the 1880s into the 1920s our township grew a pace with an influx of new residents taking advantage of the housing boom which pretty much obliterated the countryside around what we now know as the Four Banks, off along Wilbraham Road and the long roads off Oswald. In the course of that development the old name for the area was lost and what had once been Martlege became ‘New Chorlton.’ I doubt that many who moved in even gave a second thought to that older Chorlton, instead they looked to stamping their own identity on the area. They set up sporting and cultural clubs and societies and above all wanted the Corporation to honour its promise of a public library, made when we voted to join the city in 1910.This came about in November
1914 and it is fitting that the Edge Theatre & Arts Centre are embarking on an exciting new project. It’s being funded by the Arts Council and The Edge want as many people from the local community as possible, to get involved.Artistic director, Janine Waters says, “Opening 1914 will be a new piece of musical theatre with participatory workshops and accompanying exhibitions to celebrate the lives of ordinary people, opening a long awaited library, against the backdrop of a world just three months into the Great War.“We would love to hear from anyone who has stories, photos, letters, anecdotes or imaginings about the library in its early days. It opened in the November which coincides with the annual Chorlton Book Festival and this project will be a highlight of the birthday celebrations.“Are you the great grandchild of Chorlton’s first librarian? Do you have an invitation to the opening

It is no secret that the Merseybank and Barlow Moor estates, both of which run parallel to Southern Cemetery in Chorlton, have had more than their fair share of troubles in the past. Crime and anti-social behaviour, committed by a small but unwelcome minority, can be devastating to any community - something the residents of these areas know only too well. But with the opening of their state of the art community centre, the Barlow Moor Community Association is fighting back...It took years of campaigning, hard work and funding applications, but in January of this year the Barlow Moor Community Association (BMCA) proudly announced the opening of their brand spanking new community centre on Merseybank Avenue. A purpose-built complex with its own library, computer access, children’s playgroup, and facilities providing educational and recreational activities for all ages, the centre has already had a huge impact on improving the lives and social wellbeing of local
residents. Offering everything from team-building youth projects in games, sports and creative arts to family-orientated fun days to social events and day trips for the over 60s, the centre also runs regular advice and guidance sessions on issues such as housing, debt and unemployment. If that wasn’t enough, they provide classes in a variety of educational subjects.And with your help they can do more. Partnered with Southway Housing Trust and numerous other organisations, the BMCA champion many regeneration projects in the area, and are keen to build upon this whilst extending other activities within the centre itself. If you can help, if you have specific skills or services you would like to offer, either as a volunteer member or director, they would be delighted to hear from you. So why not go along, meet the staff and volunteers and have a look around these fantastic new facilities? You might want to get involved. You might want to make a donation or offer the benefit of your experience. You might just want to sit and chat a while.

“I LOVE you for opening this shop.”“My daughter has not stopped talking about how great your shop is - apparently you’ve changed her life by opening.” “This is just what Chorlton needs!”“I’ve had so many positive comments since I opened the shop in July”, says Danielle Lowy, owner of Chorlton’s Make It! Shop. “We’re a new independent, aiming to help all ages explore and enjoy their creative side. We stock craft supplies and all-in-one kits include paper-crafting, sewing, knitting, crochet, felting, upcycling and weaving. We have cooking and gardening items too - upside-down hanging basket anyone?” There are inspiring and colourful examples of creative makes all around the shop, as well as printed step-by-step tutorials to
take home. The shop’s Have-a-go Table showcases different crafts and encourages everyone to dabble in something new. There’ll be a range of workshops starting in the autumn too. The shop has a wonderful Handmade in Manchester area, which offers a growing range of unique and beautifully crafted items by local artists. We saw customers buying gifts, cards and wrapping paper, then settling down to wrap their purchases in the shop. “If you feel you’ve no time to make things, we can advise you on some great ‘quick fix’ creations as well as projects you can pick up and put down over a few evenings”, adds Danielle. “Making something, whether it’s decorative or practical, is a brilliant way to relax and escape from some of the stresses of daily life”.

Bowls: A team win bragging rights at South West

The annual President’s Day at Whalley Range Cricket Club proved to be another big hit as former club legends showed their skills in the traditional match between ‘The Experienced
Players’ and the ‘Older Players’. The former team proved to have the edge. Among those enjoying the day was former Range player and TV darts commentator John Gwynne.
Range juniors continued their busy and successful schedule with the U9s and U11s winning their respective matches against Brooklands and Urmston. The eagerly awaited local derby in the Trafford Mixed Bowling League at South West Manchester Cricket Club featured the table-topping South West A against their division two promotion rivals South West B.The A team reinforced their title credentials with a comfortable win with former cricket legend Harry Whiteley being one of the few stars for the B team who are still in with a good chance of joining them in the top flight.One of their consistent stars for the A team has been Alex Mitchell (pictured) along with her brother Rob and they both posted big wins in the local derby.In division one of the Trafford Evening League the Lloyds A team are continuing their unstoppable
title charge with another big win by 61 chalks at local rivals Bowling Green.Lloyds have lost just two of their fixtures this season and at Bowling Green their winners were Charlotte Hough, Tom Mainwaring, Pete Smith, Amanda Ridley, Dave Phillips and Steve Cook.
