About the Confucius Institutes /关于孔子学院

Te Chinese National Office or eaching Chinese

as a Foreign Language (“Hanban” in Chinese), with

support rom the PRC Ministry o Education, hasestablished Conucius Institutes in over 90 coun-

tries, with almost 100 in the U.S. alone, in an effort

to promote mutual understanding and riendship

between China and the rest o the world through

vigorous support or Chinese language teaching and

cultural exchanges.

中国国家汉办在中国教育部的支持下在世界90多个国家和地区建立了孔子学院，其中在美国

Confucius Institute at the UHM

夏威夷大学孔子学院

Te CI-UHM was established in November, 2006—

the sixth in the U.S.—as a partnership between the

University o Hawai‘i at Mānoa and Beijing Foreign

Studies University. Te CI-UHM is housed within

the university’s Center or Chinese Studies (CCS),

with its over 50 specialist aculty and some 150 stu-

dents majoring in Chinese Studies, and is ully sup-ported by the Center. Our partner institution is the

elite Beijing Foreign Studies University, which trains

70% o China’s diplomats in oreign language and

area studies. In 2013, the CI-UHM was designated

a “Conucius Institute o the Year” by the Hanban.

夏威夷大学孔子学院（英文简称CI-UHM）由

夏威夷大学与北京外国语大学合作创办的，成立于2006年11月，是美国第六所孔子学院。夏

威夷大学孔子学院挂靠夏威夷大学中国研究中

心（英文简称CCS），并得到中国研究中心全

力支持。该中心拥有50多名专家学者及大约150

名研究生。合作伙伴北京外国语大学是一所

精英学府，在语言教学和国别研究方面成果斐

然，中国70%的外交官出自该校。2013年，夏威

夷大学孔子学院被评为全球先进孔子学院。

Our Mission /我们的使命

Te CI-UHM provides and promotes excellent in-

struction in Chinese language and culture in the

State o Hawaii and beyond, and acilitates mutualinterchange between the U.S. and China.

夏威夷大学孔子学院在夏威夷州内外提供并推

动中国语言和文化方面的优质教学，促进中美

两国的相互交流。

Our Activities /我们的活动

1. Chinese language instruction /中文教学

Direct instruction: Te CI-UHM offers non-credit,

weekend classes at eight levels, through the Univer-

sity’s Outreach College. Enrollment stands at about

100 students per semester. In addition, courses can

be tailored and offered “on demand” to groups o

five or more students—staff o the East-West Centerand Chaminade University have taken advantage o

this service in the past. From 2011 to 2013, some

Support to other programs: CI-UHM instructors pro-

vide assistance to other Chinese language programs

in Honolulu, including the instructors and students

o the Chinese section in the University’s Depart-ment o East Asian Languages and Literatures, with

its newly established Chinese Flagship Program;

Punahou School’s Afernoon Immersion Program;

and private aferschool/weekend programs such as

Munlun School.

2000 public school students in the Kaiser Complexon Oahu and Pau’uilo Complex on the Big Island re-

ceived instruction in Mandarin Chinese. Roosevelt

School also provided aferschool training. All direct

instruction is provided by highly-trained instruc-

tors rom the Beijing Foreign Studies University.

直接教学: 夏威夷大学孔子学院通过夏威夷大学社区延伸学院提供非学分周末中文课程，共约8

个层次，每期课程约100名学员。而且，我们还

2. Training in “best practices” for Chinese language

teachers /培训中文教师“最佳教学实践”

Annual STARTALK Summer Teacher Institute & Lan-

guage Camp: Funding rom the U.S. National Securi-

ty Agency’s SARALK program, joined with Con-

ucius Institute unding, has supported an annualeacher raining Institute or U.S.-based Chinese

language teachers and concurrent Chinese Language

Camp or high school students annually since 2007.

Keynote speaker at annual conference of HALT: Since

2009, the Conucius Institute has invited a national-

ly known specialist in language education to speak

at the annual conerence o the Hawaii Association

o Language eachers. Tese have included Stephen

Krashen (pictured below) and ACFL eachers-o-the-Year.

Workshops and lectures: CI-UHM sponsors day-long

workshops and seminars to provide pedagogical

training to pre- and inservice language educators.

Nationally known specialists have included Mimi

Met (pictured below), Helena Curtain, Richard Day,JD Brown, Blaine Ray and others.

Administration of HSK exams: HSK Chinese lan-

guage standardized tests are offered on demand.

UHM’s Culture Day: CI-UHM collaborates with the

Chinese section o the University o Hawaii’s De-

partment o East Asian Languages and Literatures

to offer an annual, day-long celebration o cultureand learning, open to Chinese language students at

UHM and elsewhere. Attendance reaches about 500

students and aculty.

夏威夷大学中国文化日: 夏威夷大学孔子学院与

夏威夷大学东亚语言文学系中文部合作，每年

举办中国文化日活动，夏威夷大学学习中文、

CLEAH’s Culture Fair: Te CI-UHM supports the

Chinese Language Education Association o Hawaii

in offering a biennial Culture Fair, which attracts

about 150 students rom middle and high school

Chinese language programs.

夏威夷中文教师协会中国文化节: 夏威夷大学孔

子学院支持并参与夏威夷中文教师协会的中国

文化节活动，该活动每两年一次，吸引大约150

多名学习中文的中小学生参加。

Speech Contests: Since 2011, the CI-UHM has held

an annual speech contest or students o Chinese

in age-appropriate categories, at school through

university levels. A total o nearly 100 studentshave participated. In 2014, the CI-UHM sponsored

UH student Michael Spencer to compete in the

South-Western U.S. conerence, where he did well

enough to be designated the regional representative

to the ormal conerence in Beijing.

中文演讲比赛: 自从

2011年以来，夏威夷大学孔

子学院每年举办中文演讲比赛，学生按照年龄

work onsite.

“Foreigners Speak Chinese”: Chinese language stu-

dents at UHM sel-organized an afernoon talent

showcase in Spring, 2013, including perormances

o martial arts, skits, poetry recitation, songs, danc-

with support rom the CI-UHM.“外国人说中文”: 夏威夷大学中文学生2014

年春自发组织了一场才艺表演，包括武术、小

Weekly “Chinese Language Corner”: at UHM. Each

Friday afernoon rom 4:00 to 5:30 pm during theFall and Spring semesters, the teachers o the CI-

UHM host a gathering or any students who wish to

practice Chinese or seek tutoring help.

Instruction in Chinese Martial Arts: Beginning in

Fall, 2014, the CI-UHM offers instruction in Chi-

nese Martial Arts on campus, and in collaboration

with the Hawaii Wushu Center, establishes a Con-

ucius Classroom or Martial Arts.

武术教学: 自2014年秋季学期开始，夏威夷大学

孔子学院在校园开设武术课程，并与夏威夷武

4. Focus on China: Past and Present

Conferences and Symposia: Each year, the CI-UHMsponsors one or more major conerences and sym-

posia on a variety o topics relating to Chinese Stud-

ies. Tese have included “Rethinking the Chinese

Revolution: 1911 in Global Perspective,” held March

28–30, 2011, the “White Snake Symposium” held in

Spring, 2010, and the upcoming international con-

erence on “Conucian Values in a Changing WorldCultural Order,” to be held October 8–12, 2014.

Chinese film and filmmakers at HIFF: Te CI-UHM

supports Chinese film programming at the annual

Hawaii International Film Festival in October or

November each year, generally by subsidizing the

expenses o a prominent Chinese filmmaker to visit

Honolulu to discuss a film screening at the estival.

Past speakers at orums hosted by CI-UHM have in-cluded Zhang Yimou, Jia Zhangke, Lu Chuan, and

in 2014, Diao Yinan.

夏威夷国际电影节: 夏威夷国际电影节每年10

月或11月举行，夏威夷大学孔子学院每年都支

持夏威夷国际电影节的中国电影项目，邀请中

Distinguished Lectures: On average, one distin-

guished lecturer per semester speaks to campus andcommunity audiences in Honolulu on topics relat-

ing to Chinese Studies. Past speakers have included

individuals prominent in journalism, diplomacy,

Performing Arts: Music, Xiangsheng, Jingju: Since

2006, the CI-UHM has held a perorming artsestival on average once every year, including per-

ormances by olk orchestras, the guqin maestro

Li Xiangting and Guangdong naahm-yam Master

Au Kuan-Cheong, and a week o perormances by

xiangsheng specialist and teacher Ding Guangquan

and his students, including the amous Dashan. wo

UHM student-acted Jingju plays—Te White Snake

and Lady Mu Guiying akes Command—received

support rom the CI-UHM. Many o the perorm-ers toured to Honolulu and outer island school dis-

tricts, to tremendous interest.

5. Collaboration with the Community

“Splendor of China” annual exhibition: Every Novem-

ber, the CI-UHM supports the Chinese Chamber oCommerce o Hawaii in their resplendent “Splendor

o China” exhibition, which brings together nearly 200

community groups and a visitor total o over 10,000

people, in an annual celebration o Chinese culture and

trade air o Chinese products.

“华美中国”文化与商务展: 每年11月，夏威夷大

学孔子学院支持并积极参与夏威夷中华总商会主办的“华美中国”文化与商务展。每年约有200个

当地团体参与这一大型展出活动，吸引观众约一

万多人。

Lectures and performances at senior communities: Byinvitation, CI-UHM speakers and perormers tour

to area senior communities and retirement homes,

to engage with the elderly in Honolulu.

Translation support: When requested, the CI-UHMhas translated documents or government, school,

and private organizations, at no cost.

6. International Exchanges / 国际交流

Principal and Lawmaker visits to China: In the sum-

mertime, the CI-UHM work with the Hanban to or-

ganize delegations o Hawai‘i school principals and

lawmakers to visit their counterparts in Beijing and

elsewhere.

校长和议员代表团访华: 夏威夷大学孔子学院组

织中小学校长和议员在夏天访问中国，与北京

和其他地区的中国同行交流。

Summer camps in Beijing and elsewhere: Tere are

two annual camps or school students, one or a

week in Beijing organized by the Beijing Foreign

Studies University, and another or two weeks in

Beijing and another city in China, organized by the

Hanban. Students pay or air travel, but in-Chinacosts are covered by the Hanban. Te CI-UHM pro-

vides scholarship or the two camps on need basis.

中国夏令营: 每年夏天，夏威夷高中学生可以参

加两个到中国的夏令营，一个由北京外国语大

学主办，大约10天时间在北京体验中国语言和

文化，并与中国学生交流。另一个由孔子学院

总部主办，在北京和中国另外一座城市体验中国语言文化，并与当地学生交流，共14天，每

年1-3月申请。参加夏令营的学生只需支付国际

旅费、签证费等，在中国的交通、食宿等费用

由孔子学院总部支付。夏威夷大学孔子学院为

家庭困难的学生提供一定金额的奖学金，补贴

机票费用。

“Chinese Bridge” competition: Each spring, the CI-

UHM organizes a speech plus talent competition in

Honolulu. Te winner may be invited to compete in

Los Angeles, and winners at that event may be in-

vited to compete in Beijing. All travel is paid by the

Hanban.

“汉语桥”比赛: 夏威夷大学孔子学院在每年春季举办中文演讲和才艺比赛，获胜选手可以到

洛杉矶赛区参加“汉语桥”选拔赛，在选拔赛

中获胜的选手将应邀到中国参加“汉语桥”中

文演讲和才艺大赛，比赛选手的一切费用由孔

子学院总部支付。

Hanban scholarships: Te Hanban offers generous

scholarships or U.S. students to study in China or

a month to as long as several years.
