The Good News November 2018 2

Dear Friends of Jesus our Savior, December is a month that people look forward to things to come. People, especially children, look forward to Christmas to celebrate with family and friends. People look forward to the New Year especially if they can’t wait for the current year to be over. Students look forward to Christmas break and the list could continue. December 2nd is the beginning of the season of Advent. Advent means coming. However, the emphasis is not on the first coming of Jesus, although we look forward to celebrating that special day, it is a season to emphasize the second coming of Jesus. Jesus is our King who will be coming in all His glory to judge the world in righteousness. For those who don’t believe in Jesus they will be judged in their own righteousness, a righteousness that can’t save them. In Isaiah 64:6 it reads, “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” The message Isaiah is proclaiming is that all people are unclean sinners who can’t save themselves by what they do. Therefore, those who don’t believe in Jesus will be judged by their own unrighteousness and won’t be saved. The only reason believers in Jesus are saved is because of the righteousness of Christ. In Romans 3:21-24 it reads, “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption

that came by Christ Jesus.” The Good News is that believers in Jesus are saved by what Christ has done, His righteousness, that has been given to believers by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we look forward with joy to the day when Jesus comes again. In the meantime, there are a lot of people who don’t believe in Jesus. There are people who are lost without Jesus in their lives and don’t even know it. People, around the world and in our own community, who need to hear to hear the Good News of Jesus in order to be saved. Therefore, Advent is a season that we all should look forward to because many people are open to an invitation to a Christmas service or a conversation about Jesus. Advent is a season to engage in meaningful ways with those God has put in our lives to share His amazing love. While we are not saved by what we do, because we are saved people see our faith by what we do. God’s Spirit moves us to live out our faith as we serve those around us. Therefore, I pray we are all convicted to make the most of this Advent season. That God will use all of us to help people prepare for the day of Christ’s return through our giving, our sharing and our invitations to know Jesus as their new born King. Have a blessed Advent and Merry Christmas,

Pastor Vince Harman

Thank you to everyone who participated in Operation Christmas Child with Yuma Lutheran School! This is a great ministry opportunity that we look forward to every year. Thank you for helping us to share the joy of Christmas with children all over the world. The month of December is full of energy and excitement! The students and staff are preparing for the Christmas assembly, the students are excited about Christmas break (ok, so is the staff!) and the chill in the air reminds us that winter is here! While we see all the stores decorating for Christmas and carols are on some of the radio stations already, we need to sit back and remember the real reason for this exciting season. If not for the birth of Jesus, we would have nothing to celebrate. How lucky we are as Christians to know that Jesus has come to save us from ourselves and has given us a reason to celebrate our lives! To Him be the glory this Christmas season! We would love for you to join us for the Orchestra Concert on December 2nd at 2:00 PM in the gym. Our students are working hard on several pieces to get you in the Christmas mood! We would also like to invite you to the Christmas Assembly in the gym on Friday, December 14th at 12:45. Classes are preparing something special to share with the group and we will hear the story of Jesus’ birth as read from the Bible. We would love to see you there!

The Good News November 2018 4

Black Friday! Cyber Monday! This year some stores didn’t even wait for Halloween to be over before they “decked the halls”! The pressure is on to spend, spend, spend! Christmas—the time when we celebrate the GREATEST GIFT OF ALL has long ago been turned into a season of overspending and over indulging!

Oh my! That was a cheery beginning! Don’t get me wrong, I love gift giving! I love helping others and sharing the blessings God has bestowed on us. But sometimes, we put a little too much emphasis on spending money and not enough on GIVING!!

So what’s the difference, you ask? Many times, giving does involve spending money. But the most meaningful gifts are those simple expressions of love we sometimes forget in the hustle, bustle of Holiday preparations.

Let’s start at home. After all—charity begins at home—remember? Find yourself snapping at each other, being impatient, becoming harsh and irritated with each other? We can be the least loving with the people we love most! After all—they’re not going to fire us or “unfriend us”! They will still be your spouse, your kids, your parents tomorrow so what’s to lose? I understand! Been there, done that!

And then there’s the workplace—a little easier to control your frustrations (need to make a good impression, after all!), but. . . still happens, right? And how about being pushed around in the overcrowded stores, having someone cut in line ahead of you when you’ve been waiting a long time and, for heaven sake, are tired and out of time! AND patience!! I could go on, but we all know these situations. Do you find yourself saying Merry Christmas through gritted teeth? Ahhh! Time for a REFOCUS!!

I’ve sat quietly at the end of a hectic day and thought about all the impatient reactions, words spoken in haste, unpleasant attitudes that I have produced. And most of all to the people I love the most! And then thought about how terribly inconvenient it was for the Prince of Peace, the Creator of the universe, the King of kings to leave the glories of heaven to come down to earth in the form of

a helpless baby and be born in the most humble of circumstances! He came willingly to give us the most precious gift ever. And He is still here—to help us live lives of love and kindness and CARING! (Read Twylah’s CARE article if you haven’t yet!)

Passing on God’s love to others is about the greatest gift you can give. And it’s free! There are moments when a SMILE can be just what a person needs. A thoughtful word of ENCOURAGEMENT can mean the world to someone. Taking the time to LISTEN WITH THE HEART! (Yes—even your spouse or kids! Especially your spouse or kids! At times it means being tough and not giving in to foolish demands but giving encouragement and a better way instead!) A sincere COMPLIMENT can make a person’s day. And don’t forget about the gift of your TIME! Look for people who need a touch of God’s love—and reach out to them. Even a smile can change their hearts. Make them laugh. Give a compliment. And then PRAY for/with them!

Hard to do? Ahh! I know about that! There are times when I’m about as low as I think I can get and there doesn’t seem to be anything in me left to give. But that’s the wonderment of our relationship with God! He’s in the heart changing business! “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26 It’s then that my spirit cries out and God’s Spirit prays for me for that heart transformation. Sometimes God just says, “Smile and I’ll do the rest!” When I manage a smile, that’s my obedience and recognition of God’s power. He knows a smile is all I can muster but He takes it and does something amazing inside me! God tells us that He is ALWAYS at work in us to make us WILLING and ABLE to obey His purpose! (Phil. 2:13)

(I’ve got a long way to go but, WOW! He’s working on me! How about you?)

So—Go ahead with your shopping and gift giving. But keep it all in perspective and remember the BEST GIFT OF ALL that you can give is GOD’s LOVE! That’s CONNECTING PEOPLE TO CHRIST!

GIVE THE BEST GIFT OF ALL!

“It is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one

can boast.” ~ Ephesians 2:8-9

“David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord.”

~ 2 Samuel 6:5 As we approach the Christmas season this year...our plans and focus are on the greatest gift the world has ever received...the birth of our Savior, Jesus, who was born in a stable surrounded by animals in the most meager setting...not with grandeur...but still with glory. He came to earth in the form of a baby to save us from our sins. Alleluia! And yet, how many times do we forget this wonderful gift and the simple way it was delivered...and instead get caught up in the materialistic side of Christmas. Shopping...decorating...entertaining...shopping...baking...traveling...shopping... All of these activities are fun and make the season bright...but let us not lose sight of the simple beginnings of Christmas. A story written in the 1999 Guideposts by Karen Barber is a reminder of how the words in Ephesians 2:8-9 are true at Christmas time. “It is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” She states how she always felt underappreciated as Christmas was approaching...as she was SO busy buying the perfect gift for everyone (which took many hours), decorating the house better than the year before, and making everyone’s favorite cookies...all the while getting exhausted...and no one seemed to notice or want to help her out. It was overwhelming. No alleluia. As she was doing the decorating...she opened up a small tin can and inside was a plastic nativity set from the dollar store. Her son asked to have it. Later when she went in his room she saw that he had set up the nativity scene on his desk. As she looked at it she realized that he had not put Mary and Joseph lined up on each side of the baby, with the shepherds on one side and the wise men on the other. Instead he had made a circular scene. The manager was in the center and every figure had their backs turned to the observer and their faces hidden. She peered over the shoulders of the anonymous, backward figures to see what everyone was staring at. She writes, “In that small quiet moment as my eyes fell upon the Christ Child in the manger, I found myself moving out of the center of attention and back into my

rightful place as part of the wider circle. Every purchase I had made, every gift was made possible by the greater gifts of life, time, health, intellect, creativity, and love that had all come directly from God. If I kept my gaze steadily on the Christ Child, half of the time outside observers wouldn’t even glimpse my face. I left my son’s room and decided it was time to start a new tradition...to keep my eyes off of myself and on the One Who gave His name to Christmas.” Alleluia! As we prepare for Christmas may we keep our gaze on the Christ Child...and not what the world says we need to do to be ready for December 25th. As you wrap gifts to put under the Christmas tree consider adding a few packages that are filled with the gift of love and life. What will your family think if they open a gift that has some of the following thoughts written in it?

Make someone’s day—Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest accomplishment, or the smallest act of CARE-ing—all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

Make a difference—The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.

Count your blessings—Find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives. Also, remember all things come from God...don’t forget to thank Him!

Have faith—Trust in the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul.

CARE deeply—Take the time to make a difference in the lives around you...and then in the life of a stranger.

Volunteer—Even if it’s a little thing, do something for those who need help; something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

Take nothing for granted—Perform every act in life as though it were your last.

Give these “gifts” to the people you love and CARE for and make the world a better place! Share your faith with others...and make the manger the center of your Christmas season! Alleluia!!! Merry Christmas!

What are your mites used for? Based on the Biblical account of the widow's mite (Luke 21:1–4), the Mite Box is intended

for regular contributions of "mites" — offerings above and beyond the support

given to congregations and the LCMS. Mite Box contributions amount to millions of

dollars that fund district and national mission grants and implement the

LWML program. The Pacific Southwest District LWML has

chosen several Mission Grants for 2017-2019. Three of those grants will be issued right here in Yuma! A new transmitter for

KCFY is one of those grants.

“KCFY 88.1 broadcasts 24 hours a day in order to reach the lost and hurting who are in need of hearing the Gospel. To provide

the community with resources to aid in distributing information for local ministries

and causes. Equipment is a necessary part of fulfilling their mission. This grant money

will be used to replace the transmitter for the station. This grant is for $10,000.”

Prayer for the ministry: Thank you Father for being a God who communicates with His creation through scripture, through creation, through sending Your Son the Living Word, and for the many different ways You speak to us today. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Note from the Treasurer: October begins the second quarter of the Fiscal Year and the General Fund shows a 12% shortfall for the month. October’s MTYCI contributions weer 46% short of the funds to make the monthly payment of $16897. The pledge period has ended, but the payment requirement will continue until the debt is paid. The shortfall is made up by funs from the General Fund, which is also showing a shortfall. As of November 11th, the total due on the loan is $215,479. *Church General Funds are needed to pay costs incurred to run the operation of our many ministries. Last year Congress made the IRA Charitable Rollover permanent!

This allows a person who is 70 (1/2) or older to roll over their required minimum distribution (RMD) up to $100,000 directly into a charity (like CLC!) and avoid paying taxes on it. This allows you to save the taxes that would have been taken out if you had taken the distribution yourself. You will have that extra money for living expenses, if you need it-OR you will have that extra amount to bless the ministry or charity you choose. It will also reduce your taxable income. To take advantage of this, contact your IRA plan administrator and have them send the funds directly to the charity (NOT to you!) and let the charity know it will be coming. (These funds are not eligible for a tax deduction.)
