    Saint Wenceslaus (c. 907 – 929), September 28

If saints have been falsely characterized as “other worldly,” the life of Wenceslaus stands as an example to the contrary: He stood for Christian values in the midst of the political intrigues which characterized 10th-century Bohemia.

Wenceslaus was born in 907 near Prague, son of the Duke of Bohemia. His saintly grandmother, Ludmilla, raised him and sought to promote him as ruler of Bohemia in place of his mother, who favored the anti-Christian factions. Ludmilla was eventually murdered, but rival Christian forces enabled Wenceslaus to assume leadership of the government.

HisrulewasmarkedbyeffortstowardunificationwithinBohemia, support of the Church, and peace-making negotiations with Germany, a policy which caused him trouble with the anti-Christian opposition. His brother Boleslav joined in the plotting, and in September of 929 invited Wenceslaus to Alt Bunglou for the celebration of the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian. On the way to Mass, Boleslav attacked his brother, and in the struggle, Wenceslaus was killed by supporters of Boleslav.

Although his death resulted primarily from political upheaval, Wenceslaus was hailed as a martyr for the faith, and his tomb became a pilgrimage shrine. He is hailed as the patron of the Bohemian people and of the former Czechoslovakia.

Reflection“Good King Wenceslaus” was able to incarnate his Christianityinaworldfilledwithpoliticalunrest.Whileweareoftenvictimsofviolenceofadifferentsort, wecan easily identify with his struggle to bring harmony to society. The call to become involved in social change and in political activity is addressed to Christians; the values of the gospel are sorely needed today.Ref: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-wenceslaus/Photo: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2f/57/d3/2f57d3384686edc515d7ca8f9352fa93.jpg

Recent Events at the Church of St. Pius X

Last Friday evening, sixteen St. Pius parishioners gathered in the lower church to inventory and prepare all of the donations for the Midnight Run the next evening. These hardworking and dedicated volunteers are shown below. And, on Saturday evening, twenty-three parishioners again gathered to prepare the food (sandwiches, soup, hot chocolate, snack bags, water) to serve to the homeless that evening. Thirteen of these volunteers are shown below, receiving a blessing from Fr. Sebastian at the 5pm Mass, prior to departing on the Run.

It was a most successful evening in NYC, departing at 9pm and returning at 1am. We served approximately 80-90 homeless and needy women and men on the streets of NYC at the four locations where we stopped. Of the 23 Run attendees, 5 were 1st time "Runners." Congratulations to the them!

The attendees for both evenings were: Karen and Jamie Bellas; Denise and Jim Craft; Elizabeth DeAlmeida; Jennifer and Matt Filos; Bob Fornabaio; Mary Ingriselli and Al Roth; Suzanne, Scott and Anthony Johnson; Hernan and Dorianna Marambio; Federico and Mariana Marini; Tom Morris; Angela, Brian and Nigel Pereira; John Ranieri; Alexandra Rodriguez; Jenny and Denis Shpits; Michael Wutkowski; and, Chris. Missing from the photos are Angela, Brian, and Nigel Pereira, John Ranieri, and Jennifer Filos.

    MINISTRY OF STEWARDSHIPHIGHLIGHTS

    LITURGY

OUTREACHSt. Peter’s/ St. Denis’ Weekly and Lenten Food DrivesThroughout the year and during Lent, our parish collects non-perishable food items for the food pantry benefiting St. Peter’s and St. Denis’ Churches in Yonkers. There is a special need for cereals. Time: Flexible; all year and February/March for Lent Volunteer Opportunities:Volunteers help coordinate with the food pantry, assist with publicity, and purchase food items to fill the paper bags (for Lent). All donations are stored in the closet in the Narthex. Monetary donations can be made by check, payable to “St. Peter’s/St. Denis’ Food Pantry” to the Rectory.   Contact Information: Dolores Brett at 914-723-5303 or [email protected]

LectorThe proclamation of the Scriptures is an ancient and important ministry in the Church. Lectors proclaim, with reverence, the Scripture readings, Prayers of the Faithful and special announcements after Communion. Any adult or teen with a clear speaking voice comfortable talking in front of people will be trained. Contact Information: Lynne Soares at 914-723-5063 or [email protected]

Time:All ministries can choose the Mass time(s) they prefer. (Schedules are prepared in advance through an internet based Ministry Scheduler.)

A recent Journal News article highlighted the significant increase in families that fall under the ALICE category (Asset Limited,

Income Constrained, Employed). These families struggle with basic needs like housing, food, child care and transportation.

The number of families in Yonkers under ALICE has jumped to 52%! Our donations of food to the St. Peter's/St. Denis' Food

Pantry has helped them out for years, but the need seems greater than ever in many Westchester communities. PLEASE continue to bring in canned or packaged foods weekly and put them in the Food Pantry closet in the hallway. Thank you! Ê

The St. Pius X Pipe Organ is on the way! As you can see, many of the 2105 pipes for our new organ have been installed. Once the pipes are installed, each pipe must be voiced – adjusted for pitch, volume and timbre. Our organ will contain 37 ranks of pipes. Each rank has its ownparticulartoneandcolor, muchlikethedifferentinstruments in an orchestra. The ranks can be played individually or in myriad combinations to create a rich palate of sounds. The process of voicing the pipes is truly an art and takes a good deal of time, so we won’t have the full sound of the organ to use for a few months, but as each rank is voiced and ready to play, we will start to use them during worship. As new ranks become available, we will have a brief discussion about them before Mass, and as a community, we will get to know the intricacies, sound and character of our new organ as it comes to life.

HELP SUPPORT PIPE ORGAN PROJECT!Any gift you can make is greatly appreciated. If you can give even a small amount, we would be that much closer to our goal! However, if you can give more, Naming Opportunities are available for larger gifts of $5,000 and above – and they can be made as a collaborative gift between multiple families. Won't you consider helping us?

    Religious Education

Things to remember about our Religious Education Program Traffic PatternPlease enter the parking lot from Mamaroneck Road and leave by way of Secor Road in front of the Rectory. Parents of Grades 1 to 4 should park their car and walk to the main entrance of the school building to drop off and/or pick up your child. Do not drive in front of the Lobby of the school. Drive slowly as children often run out into the parking lot. Please be mindful and courteous to other drivers. Arrival Protocols and Departure ProtocolsParents of children in Grades 1 and 2 should walk his/her child to his/her classroom using the Main Entrance of the School ONLY. Children from grades 3 to 8 should remain in the Lobby until the Catechist arrives to escort them to their classroom. Students should not be in the classroom unless the Catechist is in the classroom. DepartureParents/guardians may come into the school building 10 minutes before dismissal time and wait in the Lobby except that parents/guardians of children in Grades 1 and 2 may go to the classroom at 5:00 pm and wait outside the door for dismissal. Special considerations, please, from your Director:

    • Drive carefully and slowly

    • No child should be on the playground before or after class without adult supervision.

    • No food may be brought into classroom by young people or catechists. But children may bring their own snack and finish it by 3:30pm in the car or at the lobby.

    • For special occasions, Parish Hall will be used for any food consumption.

    • Consistent attendance is expected. If a learner has a total of three (3) absences a conference with the parents will be required. Confirmation preparation begins at Baptism and continue throughout the years preceding this sacrament. A call to report an absence is expected by a parent.

    • Safety – Main school entrance will be the only means to enter and leave the building for pick up. The doors open from 3:15 to 3:45pm but will remain locked until 4:50pm.

    • Parents or guardian are not allowed to pick up their child/children in the classroom during class. At no time will a child be permitted to leave the classroom on his/her own. For early dismissal, someone from the office will get the student from his/her classroom.

    • Cellphone – No cellphone usage, text messaging or other electronic devices will be allowed in the classroom or at any Religious Education Program activity. Cellphones may be used in the school lobby to communicate with parents or guardians ONLY, NOT for social calls, and as permitted by Catechists at off-site religious Education Program activities. Cellphones and other electronic devices may be confiscated if these rules are violated. Parents may be required to retrieve them.

    Thank You.
