Dear Friends,
I remember when I started at my first full-time
ministry in Indianapolis many years ago. I got
“baptized” into the church by having several
deaths in the first 4 months! One prominent and
wealthy member died and some were having a dis-
cussion at the funeral home visitation about the
possible inheritance he left for others. One well-meaning woman loudly said, “I
wonder what he left?” I overheard the query, walked over and quietly whispered in
her ear, “All of it.” I have seen a lot of wonderful and hurtful things happen when
death comes and the subject of inheritance comes up. I’m sure you have as well.
There are many ways and things we “inherit.” Death does not need to occur to be-
stow an “inheritance” upon us. St. Paul’s has been through some changes – not all
of them welcome. That happens in life. The Good News is that our church is not
dead and God has work for us to do. The issue is what do you want to do about it?
We have many gifts and graces with which to move forward and serve in Jesus’
name and for the glory of God! As I am now here to live among and serve with you,
there are at least six things I “inherit” as your new Senior Pastor:
The people.
The culture.
The staff.
The schedule.
The expectations.
The traditions.
Please know that I am grateful for these inheritances! Also, please know that – in
spite of expectations and traditions – I will be doing a lot of questioning and listen-
ing. I want to hear your stories and songs. I want to share my dreams and visions
with you as well. Please know that it does not mean I am planning on doing some-
thing just because I speak about it – I’m an external processor. I like to bounce
ideas and possibilities off of others. I need you to know that I love you and this
church and I intend on earning your trust to lead you. There is a lot for me to (Continued on page 2)

learn. Ultimately, this is God’s church, but I respect who and what you are. We will
learn from each other and work together. Yes, there will be more changes, but I
have sincerely always believed that God shows us the way. I will endeavor to be as
accessible and open to you and your gifts as possible. I ask the same from you. St.
Paul’s has a wonderful inheritance from those who went before us. And yet, we are
being called to change and adapt to reach others for God in today’s environment,
and face different challenges than the church has ever faced in the past. We want to
secure the future vitality of this community of faith but humbly realize that God can
further the Kingdom without us. We want, however, to make a difference and be a
part of what and where God is going. Let us move ahead then with excitement for
what God has in store for us and the marvelous inheritance given to us and for the
Promise of what we can leave for those who will follow us one day!
Confirmation
Confirmation classes for 2016-2017 will begin on September 28th. Classes will be on
Wednesday evenings every other week, at 5:45 p.m.; supper will be served. Those
who are in 8th or 9th grade (or older and not confirmed), are invited to a confirma-
tion orientation meeting on Sunday, September 11, at 10:15 a.m. This meeting is for
both parents and students.
New Office Hours
Mary Peterson has agreed to continue working in the office through August 26th, if
needed, to help with the transition. The Council has approved a new job description
for the Administrative Assistant position, with new office hours beginning August
1st. They are as follows:
Monday - Thursday: 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. with half an hour for lunch at noon
Friday: 8:30 - noon
Thank you for your patience as we all adjust to these new times.

Kenya Update from Lindsay Moreland
Fifth Quarter: August 26, Sept. 2, 9, 30, & October 14
Thank you to everyone who donated to help make it possible for me to do a clinical
pharmacy rotation in Eldoret, Kenya. I will be departing with my 5 classmates on
Saturday, July 30th, and we will return home on Friday, September 23rd. We are
all looking forward to the challenges we will be presented with and the problem
solving skills we will further develop. While there, we will be the pharmacist on the
team and make decisions for patients on what medications may be best. I will be
blogging and posting pictures weekly at: https://lindsayspharmacyrotations.
wordpress.com. Thank you all! I look forward to sharing about my experience on
Sunday, October 23rd, during Sunday School.
Fifth Quarter has been an exciting opportunity offered by the
St. Paul’s community following all home Reitz Football
games. All players, youth, and neighborhood are invited to
our gym for a great time. At each gathering there is food
offered, Friday night football highlights, as well as plenty of
social interaction.
All events are sponsored through donations from local busi-
nesses, church members, and friends of the congregation. All
of these donations make it possible for youth to have a safe place to gather on Fri-
day night.
This year we will have Fifth Quarter events on August 26th, September 2nd, 9th, 30th,
and October 14th. Additional dates will be added once we know the playoff schedule.
If you would like to make a financial donation to assist, please just make your check
to St. Paul’s and mark it “5th Quarter.” All proceeds collected help pay for food and
activities. If you would like to donate drinks, please bring them to the stage in the
Parish Hall, and we will take it from there. Favorite drinks are water, Ski, Dr. Pep-
per, Diet Mt. Dew, and Mountain Dew.
If you would like to help the evening of the event, we need people to assist with car
parking, serving food, welcoming youth, and with clean up. Please find the sign-up
sheet in Parish Hall at the Hospitality Center to sign up for any of those opportuni-
ties. Thank you so much for your continued support of the great event. Your partic-
ipation is greatly appreciated.

What a wonderful three and a half months I got to spend with all of you at St.
Paul’s. For me coming in as a short-timer, it was most heartening to see how gra-
cious and welcoming everyone was. And having left parish ministry on not a very
high note, you all made that ministry sing for me again. I never expected the gener-
osity of my last Sunday with you and was overwhelmed and deeply appreciative of
it. My little money tree went with me to Good Sam and reminds me of all of you

GREAT FOOD, GREAT MUSIC, GREAT CAUSE
Can You Help? Plastic Caps and Lids Needed: A neighborhood youth program at the C. K. New-
some Center is in need of plastics caps and lids. They are planning to install a rain
garden/vegetable garden next spring near the center. The youth participating in
the program will help to develop and maintain it. Underground catch basins will be
installed to capture and hold rainwater, which can then be used during dry periods
in the summer. As part of the facility, they are collecting plastic bottle caps and lids
which will be used to make two benches that will be installed as part of the land-
scaping in the garden. Collection containers will be located by the north entrance
from the parking lot and in the kitchen. We will be collecting these for the next sev-
eral months, so please start saving them now. Your help is greatly appreciated!
Sharing the Warmth: The Triangle Class is still collecting items for “Voices Shar-
ing the Warmth Program. Items needed are new or gently used robes, pajamas,
sweatshirts/pants, T-shirts, white socks , blankets and throws. Place your items on
the stage in the box marked “Warmth” or in their classroom (across from the eleva-
tor.)

Holiday Bazaar The name and date have changed. The Triangle Class is again sponsoring a Bazaar
on Saturday, October 29, 2016, from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Proceeds from table
rental will benefit the St. Paul’s Youth Mission Trip. The Ladies Aid will have a
bake sale and soup and sandwiches will be available for lunch. For more informa-

FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY
The West Side Food Pantry, located at Simpson UMC, is supported
by our monthly food donations as well as by volunteers who work
there on a regular basis. They are currently in need of additional vol-
unteers, both temporary & on-going, on Wednesday afternoons from
1:30-3:30. If you can help, please call Simpson UMC at 812-423-7636

Don’t forget, the first Sunday of every month is food pantry Sunday. Bring your
donations and put them in the baskets the entrances. Food is needed ALL year

CHILDREN WORSHIP & WONDER THANK YOU
A “BIG THANK YOU” to Pam Buschkill for the monetary donation in memory of
her mother, Helen Wesselman. Helen was a Sunday School teacher in our Kinder-
garten Dept. for many years and truly loved the children that she worked with. Al-
so, to the Triangle Class, for their very generous donation. This money has been
used to purchase all but one of the stories that we needed for the Fall. And another
“Thank You” to Bob Kramer for re-working a small table on wheels for us to use in
telling the stories each Sunday. We could still use more volunteers to be Story Tell-
ers and Greeters, so please let Pam Schuck know if you have an interest in working
with our children.
WEEKDAY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
To St. Paul’s UCC, Thank you for your support of Weekday Christian Education.
It is due to the faithful supporters such as yourself that Weekday has been able to
share the love of Jesus with children in our community’s schools for 74 years. I
want you to know that you are making a difference in the lives of hundreds of chil-
dren. If it were not for your support, many of our participating children would not
hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for ensuring that God’s word and His
love are reaching the unchurched children in our community each and every school

Parish Nursing Breakfast Makes Champions
With school starting, this is just another reminder of how important breakfast is
daily. This actually is important for everyone! If you had to make only one small
change to have increased energy, a better mood and weight control, would you com-
mit to it? What if the change took less than five minutes a day? Scientific research
continues to show that eating breakfast is one simple habit that provides numerous
health benefits. A balanced breakfast ensures long-lasting energy and promotes a
healthy eating pattern for the whole day. Studies show that people who consume a
morning meal tend to eat fewer calories and less saturated fat and cholesterol, plus
they have better overall nutritional status.
A good breakfast consists of at least three food groups:
Grains, Breads + Cereals – such as, whole-wheat bagel, whole-grain toast or
oatmeal
Vegetables OR Fruits – such as, bell peppers, orange slices or grapes
Milk + Milk Products OR Meat, Beans + Nuts – such as, low-fat or fat-free
milk, yogurt, breakfast sausage or walnuts
Follow this equation and choose 1 food for each:
Grains,
Breads, and + Vegetables or + Milk or milk products or
Cereals Fruits Meats, beans, and nuts
Breakfast can be as quick and simple as a smoothie or high- protein snack to eat on
the go. There are numerous new recipes online for quick nutritious breakfast items.
Most importantly…Don’t skip breakfast!

Habitat Is Building
It has been a busy summer for the 2016 UCC/DOC Habitat project. The UCC
and DOC churches are sponsoring the house this year in partnership with BKD.
The house, at 612 Baker Avenue, is under roof, ready for the professionals to work
on plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and drywall. There will be opportunities for those
with all skill levels to participate later with painting and landscaping. Our future
homeowner, Jennie Rickabaugh, is busy working on her sweat-equity hours and ea-
ger for her new home. Thanks to the Zumba event, benefit lunch, and individual do-
nations, we have nearly reached our pledge of $3500 in support of the UCC/DOC
half-house sponsorship of $40,000. All support is appreciated, and any contributions
above our 2016 sponsorship will go toward the next build. Thanks for your support.

Children’s Ministry News
SUPER SUMMER VBS
Our first Super Summer VBS was held on June 3rd and 4th. Our theme this year is
Deep Sea Discovery and we are learning that “GOD IS WITH ME WHEREVER I
GO”. We had about 19 children who attended our first weekend session. Our sec-
ond session was held on July 8th and 9th with about 25 children in attendance. The
children have enjoyed hearing about some great Bible stories such as Noah and the
Flood, Jonah and the Whale, just to name a few, as well as some awesome crafts –
games in the gym – snacks and they even learned some new songs.
So if you missed out on all of the fun so far, you have one more chance to join us on
August 20th at 9:00 for the last day of VBS. After lunch we plan on having a ser-
vice project for the children to help with. We will be making “Lifesaver Awards”
which we hope to deliver to the St. Joe Fire Station. Our second project will be to
make Prayer Puffs which we will let the children distribute to someone they know
that may be ill or having a hard time.
On Sunday, August 21st the children will be singing a couple of the songs that they
enjoyed and we will be having an “All Church Picnic” directly following the 11:00 ser-
vice. There will be an “Island Inflatable” for the children and corn hole games for
the adults. So come join us for some good food and fellowship. Reservations are a
must in order to have just the right amount of food for everyone. You will find
these forms enclosed as well as at the Hospitality Center or the Church Office.

CHILDRENS SERMON VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
2016 is upon us and that means we will need “volunteers” to sign-up for the 2nd and
4th Sundays of each month to do the Children’s Message for the 11:00 service. You
will find a new sign-up sheet at the Hospitality Center so please drop by and sign up
for a Sunday or maybe even more than one! This is a special time in the service
just for our children before they head to Children’s Worship and Wonder but we
need your help to make it happen. So, If you have any questions or need some re-
