VISION STATEMENT:
Bethlehem . . . A beacon
Upon the hill who
Ministers to all God's children through
Christ . . . who first served us
MISSION STATEMENT: We are here to ignite the light of Christ in all people, by reaching out to others, by growing as followers of Christ, and by going forth in ministry and service, so that all may know God’s love in Jesus Christ.
Pastor Paragraph 2012
It is almost time to celebrate Easter, again. When I was in seminary back in the late 1980’s, I had a classmate named Grover. He was one of those unassuming people who just sort of faded into the background. Around Easter, I think in 1988, the year Donna and I graduated from seminary, the seminary invited the students to submit poems for Easter that would be printed in the seminary student newsletter. Here it is twenty-four years later. Like most people, I have lost track of that seminary newsletter, and cannot remember a single line from a single submitted poem, except a fragment of a line that Grover submitted. I know he wrote about Jesus being laid in a borrowed tomb, and how cold and dark it must have been in the tomb, especially after the tomb was sealed with a stone. And the slab of cold gray stone on which his precious body lay. Everyone thought his body would lie there and eventually decompose like all other bodies. Then Grover’s fragment: “. . . a finger moved.” You know, that would be a great title!
Grover’s Fragment
A finger moved.
Many things have happened because Jesus’ finger moved. The rest of him moved, also. The rock in front of the tomb moved. The Church moved into being and will never end. A whole new way of relating to God began. The hope for eternal life that most human beings have was given new impetus: Because he lives we believe we shall live also. Think of all the magnificent things that have happened throughout history because one morning long ago his finger moved. From Michelangelo’s painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to the creation of life-saving and life-nurturing hospitals, to churches all over the world with the life-giving message of salvation for billions of peo-ple covering thousands of years, to the educational institutions that have advanced civilizations for millennia, and millions more things besides – all this because one day his finger moved. I hope and pray that each of you reading these words will have a blessed Easter. The whole message of the resurrection of Jesus is what the Apostle Paul called of first importance (1 Cor. 15:3). His message in 1 Cor. 15 is rather complex. Perhaps it would benefit us to read and ponder it as we prepare our hearts for Easter morning’s joy. “Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. . . then the saying that is written will be fulfilled, ‘Death has been swallowed up in vic-tory.’ . . . But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:51-53, 54b, 57). It is not without meaning that Paul ends his discourse on the resurrection of Jesus with these words: “Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always ex-celling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Cor. 15:58). Have a blessed Easter! And may God renew us all for the work ahead.

Ministry Plan Bethlehem UMC Spring 2012
After reminding the Church in 1 Cor. 15 of the great hope of life brought about by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul took them to the next level. Because of the resurrection, the Church has a mission: “. . . be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Cor. 15:58).
The following are some intentional steps for the ministry of Bethlehem UMC. It was presented to the Administrative Board at its March 2012 meeting. This is the pas-tor’s brief sketch. It will require a new way of doing things, like greater attention to vision, attentiveness to detail, and volunteerism. This paper is an attempt to say what needs to be done to enhance worship attendance, address membership decline, and to enhance the educational programming, children and youth ministries, and the mis-sional involvement of Bethlehem UMC. EVANGELISM AND MARKETING
Greater care with welcoming guests and follow-up. Marketing ideas for the church. Training in methods of and motivation for sharing faith
WORSHIP
What factors get our own members out of bed and to the worship service? How do we become a destination for worshippers? What is the short-term and long-term vision for worship space?
EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY Sunday school enhancement (invitational; expansive; new models) Small group ministry Big topic issues Stewardship as an educational and discipleship issue
VOLUNTEERISM Motivation to volunteer; how do we communicate needs for mission and ministry? We have a shut-in team. How about a hospital team? A grief team?
CHILDREN/YOUTH MINISTRY
How do we get people interested in making a difference in the lives of children and young people?
How can we help children and youth feel more connected to the church? FIVE PRACTICES OF FRUITFUL CONGREGATIONS (the book by Bishop Robert Schnase)

DONATIONS ACCEPTED
Heather McClamrock is a local teenager with big dreams. Just
last year she was diagnosed with her third round of Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma, a type of cancer. She and her mother rely solely on
God to bring them through their troubles and truly know the
power of prayer. Recently, Heather was told that she would have
to reside in a sanitized apartment near Duke Medical Center.
Unfortunately, the costs of that apartment are extremely high
and Heather and her mother are in need of monetary donations
to afford the medical expenses.
Let’s help keep Heather’s hope alive!

MEETINGS
THANK YOU’S
Dear Bethlehem Family, Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers during our time of sorrow. Also, the rose that was sent to Hospice helped brighten Harold’s room and the beautiful potted plant that was sent to the funeral home will be enjoyed in our home for a long time. Love to all, The Harold Stanley Family
I want to thank the church for the beautiful rose that you sent to Harold while he has been in Forsyth Hospital. Also, thank you to the youth for the Valentine cards, the cookers and the visit on Sunday afternoon. He was not able to talk with you but he did enjoy your visit very much. Thank you to everyone for keeping him in your prayers. Love to everyone, Pat Stanley
To the church family at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Our family, the family of Vida Allen, thank you so much for the outpouring of love and kindness you showed all of us as we gathered for her funeral. We appreciate the plant you gave in her memory. The gift of the delicious meal after her funeral was such a blessing, allowing us to visit together. God bless you all as you serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With Thankful Hearts, Elaine Kent & family
Bethlehem Angels Preschool
Dr. Seuss Day started the month of March with a visit from the Cat in the Hat and Dr. Seuss-related ac-tivities. The excitement continued as we learned about musical instruments, the circus, weather, and spring.
As we talked about music, several special visi-tors demonstrated instruments for us. Joe Everett,
Ezra Gough, and Steve McDowell brought guitars, dulcimers, a fiddle, a dobro, and harmonicas to show and play, and the children even had a turn at trying some of them. They loved singing along to some of their favorite songs. Thank you!
“Circus Day” brought “elephants, lions, and jugglers” to per-form tricks in the Fellowship Hall. The “trapeze artists” performed on the balance beam and gave everyone a chance to try that and other events. Parents helped out with the games, and each child left with their own balloon. It was a fun day complete with popcorn and animal cookies.
It has begun to feel like spring and the children learned about all kinds of weather from Pat Reagan, meteorologist. We learned how to be safe in a tornado and then practiced finding a safe place in the event that a tornado ever comes near our preschool.
The last weeks of March brought Spring and many learning ex-periences involving plants and flowers. The children are enjoying being able to play outside on the playground in the warm weather.
Our Spring Consignment sale was a huge success on March 17th. Parents were able to sell unneeded items while others were able to find some great bargains. Donated items were picked up by Davie Pregnancy Center and A Storehouse for Jesus. The Preschool profit was around $1900 which supplements the needs of our program. Thank you to all consignors, volunteers, and shoppers! Special thanks go out to Alex Eaton and William Howard, two of our youth who helped with clean-up!
Enrollment for the 2012-13 school year continues until all classes are filled. Call the preschool at 998-6820 or email [email protected] for more information.
AL-ANON GROUP… An AL-ANON family group is meeting at Macedonia Moravian Church, Hwy 801 North in Advance on Sun-day nights at 8 pm. The meeting is located in Room 225 above the fellowship hall. AL-ANON is a group to help families and friends of alcoholics. We welcome and share hope for those who are in need of help.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Event in
Davie County is a community event to raise money for all
types of cancer. The event begins at 11am on Saturday until
11pm and goes thru the night into Saturday morning. Each
hour reminds us of the many different stages of cancer
which include the diagnosis, the treatment, the recovery, or
the loss of the battle with this horrible disease.
CELL PHONE DONATIONS… Do you have old, unused cell phones lying around the house? Put them to good use by donating them to Davie Domestic Violence Services and Rape Crisis Center. Donated phones are either refurbished for reimbursement for client services or reactivated for client use. Safety is a key issue for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; a cell phone activated with 911 telephone service can be extremely necessary and even life-saving. Please place your old cell phones (with charger if you have it) in the designated box in the Missions Room. For questions, please contact Virginia Burnette (998-2660 after 6:00 pm).
CAMP FOR KIDS… It is time once again to think about sending a youth to “Camp for Kids!” In the past 16 years, over 500 youth, ages 9 to 17, have attended church camp through donations from Davie County churches, civic groups, and indi-viduals. Most of these youth, who are identified through Davie County Social Services, attend Carolina Bible Camp in Davie County. The cost is $190 per youth, which includes room, board, crafts, and snack money. With your help, more youth can attend camp this summer. Any amount donated to this fund is greatly appreciated. Please make your check payable to “Bethlehem UMC” and mark it and/or your envelope with “Camp for Kids.” Other items needed are Bibles, flashlights, sleeping bags, soap, shampoo, toothpaste/toothbrushes, suit-cases/duffel bags, towels, and children’s summer clothing and swimsuits. A box is located in the Missions Room for these items. If you have any questions, please contact Virginia Bur-nette (409-8721). Thank you for your support of this important community outreach! Your sponsorship of this ministry may make the difference in the life of a child.

WORSHIP CONTINUED MISSIONS MOMENT
Sam Spry is a dedicated building team member to the mission field. He just made his fifteenth trip to Jamaica! For twelve days in February, he, along with his team, worked on a recrea-tional hall associated with the Methodist Church by painting, replacing the ceiling, replacing the roof, and doing electrical work. Here are Sam’s thoughts from his latest venture in out-reach ministry. ~ Virginia Burnette, Missions Co-Chair
“This year, my trip to Jamaica was with Center Methodist Church of Welcome. We went to Anchovy, Jamaica to do work on Trinity Methodist Church on their fellowship hall. The first thing that we did was to remove all the zinc from the roof, repair rafters, and replace with new zinc. Then we started inside replacing the ceiling and the braces for the ceiling and painting the ceiling. We did vari-ous electrical jobs that were needed. The last thing that we did was to paint the inside of the building. When we were finished, it looked like a new building. This year, I got to stay in a house in Hopewell, Jamaica. This is where I went on my first building team trip in 1989. We got to go to that church one Sunday, and I got to see a lot of friends that I had met in 1989. As long as I have been going on building teams, this was the best I have been on. The peo-ple on my team and the Jamaican people that we worked with at the fellowship hall were GREAT! I just want to say a Big THANK YOU to all the people of Bethlehem for your support. You can’t imagine what it means to me.” In His Love, Sam Spry
