Reflections for Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel reading

recounts another sign, or miracle, found in

John’s Gospel, the raising of Lazarus. The context for the story of the raising of Lazarus is the Jewish

leaders’ growing animosity toward Jesus. Jesus has been in Jerusalem, taking part in the feast of the Dedication, which we have come to know as Hanukkah. The people have been pressing him to declare plainly whether he is the Messiah. Jesus tells them to look to his works, which testify to his coming from God. Many do not believe Jesus, however, and some try to stone him for blasphemy.

Into this scene of confrontation, Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, send word to Jesus that his friend is ill. Jesus is said to love Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, but he delays his journey for two days. The delay heightens the drama and shows Jesus’ obedience to God, who is to be glorified through Lazarus’s resurrection. When Jesus finally declares that he will journey to Bethany, his disciples fear for his life. Thomas declares that he and the other disciples should prepare to die with Jesus.

The scene described at Bethany is a sad one. Martha meets Jesus weeping and saying that if Jesus had been there, Lazarus would not have died. Yet she remains confident that God will do whatever Jesus asks. Martha affirms her belief that there will be a resurrection of the dead in the last days. Then Martha’s sister, Mary, comes to Jesus with the same confidence, saying that Jesus could have cured Lazarus. Jesus asks to be brought to Lazarus’s tomb where he prays and calls Lazarus out from the tomb.

At this sign, many come to believe in Jesus, but others take word of the miracle to the Jewish authorities, who begin their plans for Jesus’ death.

In raising Lazarus, Jesus shows his power over death so that when Jesus dies, those who believe in him might remember that and take hope. Just as Jesus calls for the stone to be rolled away from Lazarus’s tomb, so too will the disciples find the stone rolled away from Jesus’ tomb. Loyola Press

Now that we, at least as of the time of this writing, are not able to go to participate in Mass, what can we

do? I came across an article in the National Catholic Register (https://www.ncregister.com/blog/armstrong/no-mass) which may be helpful. I’ve adapted parts of it for what we can do at Visitation:

1. Watch or listen to the Mass. EWTN broadcasts it daily, live at 8 a.m. Eastern. At Visitation

Mass is live-streamed 7:30 AM Monday-Friday, 8:15 AM Saturday and 9:00 AM Sunday. You can access it when it is celebrated or afterwards by going to https://visitationrcchurch.org/youtube-live-feed.

2. Read the Mass readings daily. They can be found at http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/ 3. Read Magnificat. Temporarily, online versions are available for free as a service to the

Church at us.magnificat.net/free. This resource offers spiritual inspiration and the Mass readings and is also available in Spanish at latina.magnificat.net/gratis.

4. Pray the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy, two of our most powerful prayers after the Mass.

5. Make a Spiritual communion in your own words, or use this prayer written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori (this is also said at our live-stream Mass): My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

6. Go to adoration and make a Holy Hour. Our Rectory Chapel has Adoration Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM (following the live-stream Mass) until 4:00 PM.

7. Pray to Our Lady Help of the Sick for all those who have contracted the coronavirus and those who will in the future and a novena to Our Lady of Monte Berico, for protection against it.

8. Develop a devotion to the dying to help escort them safely into the arms of Jesus. The whole reason Masses are getting suspended is due to the risk of death.

9. Watch The Veil Removed (https://youtu.be/OOLZDaTgIaM) to deepen your appreciation of the Mass. This five-minute video removes the veil of this world to reveal the supernatural celebration of the Eucharist depicted in Revelation and given to us by Jesus at the Last Supper.

10. Open your Bible and read it.

Netflix and TV are fine ways to occupy your time while we’re waiting for this crisis to pass Spending time with family getting to know them is even better. Spending time to get to know the One who loves you – and wants you to be with Him forever – is the best yet!

LENT GUIDELINES HAVE NOT CHANGED

Guidelines for Fasting & Abstinence Here are the guidelines to help you understand the obligations of fasting and abstinence during the season of Lent Abstinence: A penitential practice of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years old age and older. Fasting: Fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 (inclusive). On days of fasting one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Good Friday (April 10) is a day of both fast and abstinence, and Fridays during Lent continue to be days of abstinence. The obligation of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 1 to Trinity Sunday, June 7 . However, the Code of Canon Law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

SCAM ALERT

PLEASE BE AWARE.

AT A TIME WHEN WE ARE MOST

VULNERABLE, EVIL TRIES TO LURE US

INTO DECEPTION

The Diocese of Trenton has issued an alert regarding reports of email and text scams that will use the name of a pastor to solicit funds in the form of gift cards or cash donations. The warning follows a recent report on CBS Philly about parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia being targeted. The email usually begins with a simple “Hi,” but no recipients’ name, and asks for financial help for a worthy cause. The pastor’s name concludes the email. Several pastors in the Diocese of Trenton have already heard from parishioners who received emails or text messages, seemingly from the pastor, asking for donations. The Diocese takes this opportunity to advise parishioners that pastors do not raise money in this manner and to exercise the utmost caution when receiving this type of communication. Some law enforcement in the area urge parishioners to question any email or text that doesn’t come from a person in their contacts. If the person is not known, a parishioner should call the person asking for funds to verify the story. If a pastor’s name is used, parishioners should contact the parish to verify the legitimacy of the appeal. Anyone who feels that they have been the victim of this type of scam is urged to contact their local police department.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God

(Matt 4:4) Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is still helping our neighbors in need. Please drop off nonperishable food donations in the baskets in the Church. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will collect the food each day. During this very trying time, we must not forget the less fortunate of our community and how we can be of assistance to them. As always, thank you for your generosity.

In the wise words of St. Vincent de Paul

“To serve the poor is to serve Jesus…… Love the poor. Honor them, my children, as you would honor Christ Himself.”

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We the Church of the Visitation are committed to Jesus Christ and to the needs of all our parishioners, through service, friendship and love. We do this through the proclamation of the Gospel in order to provide the spiritual, social, and practical needs of our people. God’s love becomes evident to us through our community of believers in the sacramental life and ministries of our parish. This commitment id achieved through our personal stewardship by offering our time, talent and treasure for the greater glory of God.

As we all face what has become a grave and growing health risk, it is important for all the Catholic

faithful to “persevere in hardship and keep praying regularly (Romans 12:12).” As Bishop of the

Diocese of Trenton, I invite all the Catholic faithful to join with me in prayer:

O Mary, loving Mother, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, who at the Cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Be present to all those suffering from coronavirus and to those who care for them: families, friends, neighbors, doctors, nurses, staff, government officials, pastors, priests and all who seek to do God’s will. Bring comfort and calm to the elderly, to those at risk and to all who are afraid. Be for us all a beacon of hope, lighting our path once more to the heart of your beloved Son, the Divine Healer and Health of the Sick.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion is proposed for

the faithful who are temporarily unable to

receive the Eucharist:

“My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM (immediately following live-streamed daily Mass) until 4:00 PM in the Rectory Daily Chapel.

DAILY REFLECTIONS FOR THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT Monday, March 30

BE A COURAGEOUS, PERSON; LOOK AT YOUR LIFE.

"BE FIRM AND STEADFAST! DO NOT FEAR NOR BE DISMAYED FOR THE LORD YOUR GOD IS WITH YOU ALWAYS”.(Joshua 1: 9)

It has been said, "the longest journey is the journey inward". Perhaps it's called the longest because it seems to be the most difficult. It's the journey, which most of us put off as much as possible. That's why we love TV’s, radios and telephones. They are excellent distractions from that little voice inside that bids us to go within. Today, reflect on your journey within. Are you in the process of self-examination? Or are you afraid to look at the truth about yourself? If so, bring your fear to Jesus and He will show you acceptance.

Tuesday, March 31 APPRECIATE OTHERS AND YOU'LL APPRECIATE YOURSELF.

"GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD, FOR HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER." (Psalm 136:1)

What is the purpose of gratitude? It is not just something you have to do because you were told as a child to say thank you and be gracious. There: is an important reason for living in the spirit of appreciation. Have you ever noticed that when people appreciate something you've done for them, you actually have an increase in desire to contribute to their life again? Well, the same is true for life itself. The more you appreciate the gifts you've been given, the more you will receive.

Wednesday, April 1 JUDGMENT ON OTHERS IS SIMPLY A PROJECTION OF YOUR OWN SELF-CRITICISM.

"FOR I KNOW MY OFFENSE; MY SIN IS ALWAYS BEFORE ME." (Psalm 51:5) 99% of what we say about others is really a manifestation of what's going on inside ourselves. It's been said that another way of hearing the command of Jesus to "love your neighbor as yourself' is love yourself and you'll love your neighbor. Hate yourself, criticize yourself, and you'll hate and be critical of your neighbor. Given this truth, it's important to realize that loving yourself, having a sense of self-celebration going on inside is essential in order to witness the gospel. Do the world and those in your life a favor and love yourself!

Thursday, April 2 THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE ON EARTH IS YOUR LOVE.

"SEE WHAT LOVE THE FATHER HAS GIVEN US THAT WE SHOULD BE CALLED THE CHILDREN OF GOD." (I John 3:1) You can help transform the planet. It does not take that many people focused on love to change the destiny of humanity, for love is the most powerful force of the universe. It is thousands of times stronger than anger, resentment or fear. Our Lord Jesus Christ died on a cross so that His people would finally come to realize they are loved unconditionally. In order for your love to bring about the kingdom, you must first accept God s love.

Friday, April 3 YOU ONLY KEEP WHAT YOU'RE WILLING TO GIVE A WAY.

"IF YOU FORGIVE OTHERS THEIR TRANSGRESIONS, YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER WILL FORGIVE YOU YOURS." (Matthew 6:14)

The ability to accept other people for who they are is a great challenge, and as you master it, so do you give that gift to yourself. Indeed, there appears to be a law in the universe that what goes around, comes around. Obviously, there is the existence of injustice and the probability that occasionally we will have to take our turn in experiencing it. However, for the most part, we can live m a world of love, peace and forgiveness, provided we are willing to give it away first.

Saturday, April 4 LAZINESS IS THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE.

"DO NOT NEGLECT THE GIFT YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN." (I Tim 4: 14)

Have you ever heard yourself saying, "I wish I had that person's gifts and talents-boy what I would do if 1 had those abilities"? The response to this statement is very obvious-"Not a blessed thing". After all, if we are not using our own gifts and talents, what makes us think we'd use somebody else’s? Each one of us has been endowed with certain abilities. These gifts manifest themselves in a love for something. Are you using those gifts?

Palm Sunday, April 5 GOD IS FOUND IN THE ORDINARY.

"ALL THE EARTH SHALL BE FILLED WITH THE GLORY OF THE LORD." (Numbers 14:21) In the book of I Kings, the prophet Elijah is looking for Yahweh, the living God. In the passage we hear that the prophet experienced a "mighty wind, so strong it tore the mountains and shattered the rocks", only to discover that Yahweh was not in the wind. Then Elijah experienced an earthquake and then fire, neither of which contained Yahweh. Suddenly, there was a gentle breeze and in the experience Elijah encountered the Lord. The point is clear. God is experienced in the simple events of our life.
