TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday we surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the Eucharist. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen’s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit’s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both “on the table” and “at the ta-ble.” The season of confirmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes been sadly misunder-stood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing cele-bration. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sixty Plus or Minus Club Please note: There is no meeting in July since the First Friday of the month is July 4th.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#34. If we attempt to put all things in a missionary key, this will also affect the way we communicate the message. In today’s world of instant communication and occasionally biased media coverage, the message we preach runs a greater risk of being distorted or reduced to some of its secondary aspects. In this way certain issues which are part of the Church’s moral teaching are taken out of the context which gives them their meaning. The biggest problem is when the message we preach then seems iden-tified with those secondary aspects which, important as they are, do not in and of themselves convey the heart of Christ’s message. We need to be realistic and not assume that our audience understands the full background to what we are saying, or is capable of relating what we say to the very heart of the Gospel which gives it meaning, beauty and attractiveness. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— When a priest is responsible for a parish, and has to cope with many things, his sense of responsibility can and does fill his life. He feels he hasn’t the energy or time to deal with the bigger picture. Pope Francis reminds us in today’s paragraph that the big picture, the vital picture, the true picture is being mission-ary, being missionary, being missionary. What were Je-sus’ last words to the Disciples on Mount Olivet?; “Go out to the Whole world!!!!” We can become over in-volved in the practical matters of the parish, but also as Pope Francis reminds us today, we can also have our own hobby horses, some moral teaching, some devotion, some charitable work, even liturgy. What did Jesus add to his Sending of the Disciples? “Baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”. When we em-phasize moral or other aspects of the Gospel message, we are in danger of obscuring the Incarnation. When God comes to us as a helpless babe, making no other demands than You and me take Him in our arms and hug him with love and gratitude. Too often we assume that people know that already, but if we keep plugging our own “passions” they begin to wonder and doubt.
