A Note from The Pastor Dear Parishioners,
St. Augustine tells us that one cannot
reach charity, except through humility (Treatise
on Psalm 130). How true! Pride is the opposite of
humility. Pride is that excessive love of self by
which one presumes he is better than others, that
he can criticize others, either in speech or in
thought. Pride is always ready to take offense,
and with this disposition to resent slights and inju-
ries, how is it possible to live in charity? When we
find two people who are prone to disagree and to
whom reconciliation is difficult, we can conclude
that both are full of pride. Therefore it is obvious
that charity cannot exist without humility. In the
book of Proverbs king Solomon says: Among the
proud there are always quarrels (13:10).
St. Paul knew this. In the Letter to the Phi-
lippians he urges first century Catholics to frater-
nal charity. He says in verse 2 of the first chapter:
complete my joy by being of the same mind, hav-
ing the same love, being in full accord and of one
mind. Then, in the very next verse, he says: Do
nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility
consider others to be better than yourselves. He
understood well the connection between humility
and charity.
St. Augustine tells us to picture ourselves
as the donkey which carried Christ into Jerusalem
on Palm Sunday. Everyone was applauding. The
whole city was laying down palm branches and
cloaks for Him to travel on, the way red carpets
are laid on sidewalks for celebrities. Augustine
asks: can the beast delude himself into thinking
that the praise should be aimed at him? Of course
not. The praise belongs to Christ who is with us.
(Treatise on Psalm 33). In the same way, if we
wish to be truly humble you and I must constantly
give thanks to Christ for all the good things in our
lives, and give Him the glory, keeping none for
ourselves.
Lastly, a modern saint, Mother Teresa of
Calcutta, made a list for her sisters on how to cul-
tivate humility. She said:
1. Speak as little as possible about yourself.
2. Keep busy with your own affairs and not those
of others.
3. Avoid curiosity (If you really don’t need to
know something then don’t pursue such
knowledge.)
4. Do not interfere in the affairs of others.
5. Accept small irritations with good humor.
6. Do not dwell on the faults of others.
7. Accept censures even if unmerited.
8. Give in to the will of others.
9. Accept insults and injuries.
10. Accept contempt, being forgotten and disre-
garded.
11. Be courteous and delicate even when pro-
voked by someone.
12. Do not seek to be admired and loved.
13. Do not protect yourself behind your own dig-
nity.
14. Give in, in discussions, even when you are
right.
15. Choose always the more difficult task
God bless you!
Father Eric
Sacred Heart 2019-2020 If you and your spouse are considering a Private/Catholic school for your children, Sacred Heart is the perfect choice. Sacred Heart School is a West Brighton fixture with a rich history of academic and athletic suc-cess. The school currently has an enrollment of 262 students all of whom are inspired and educat-ed in the image of God. One hundred percent of our 8th grade graduates are accepted into their high school of choice. Many of our students are awarded high school scholarships, are accepted into advanced/specialized programs and our school has among the highest ELA and Math scores on Staten Island. We place emphasis on technology in the classrooms as our kindergar-ten—eighth grade students have Chromebooks in the classroom. Homework assignments, upcom-ing events and school news are posted on our school website. Also our basketball, soccer, swimming and golf teams are not only competi-tive, they win championships! Sacred Heart also has a Junior National Honor Society as well as drama, art and chess clubs. In addition, we offer a free Pre-K and financial assistance is available to students from K-8th grade. If you are interested please contact the school at (718) 442-0347, pri-vate tours are available by appointment. St. Vincent de Paul Society: Your Saint Vincent de Paul Society is once again in need of food donations. Cans of vegetables, canned meats and fish, canned fruit, canned soup, jars of sauce, boxes of pasta, cere-al, rice, pancake mix, instant mashed potatoes and peanut butter and jelly are needed. Your donations are much appreciated and go very far in feeding the needy and hungry of our community.

Discovering Christ: “Discovering Christ” is a seven week program where all are invited to hear the Good News and personally encounter Jesus Christ. The pro-gram consists of seven weekly sessions on Sundays at 6 PM beginning on September 15th and ending on No-vember 3rd. Each session is made up of four parts: a meal, prayer time, a teaching video and a small group discussion. We are excited to be bringing “Discovering Christ” back to Sacred Heart. If you remember the pro-gram was successfully run in the fall of 2016. In addi-tion to bringing our parishioners together it resulted in the formation of our Bible Group and The Holy Name Society which in turn brought back The Communion Breakfast. This is a great opportunity for Catholics who wish to learn more about their religion or those who have fallen away from the Church to renew their faith. Sign up sheets are available in the vestibule and for more information contact Don Maj at (646) 300-4491. Sacred Heart Mass Schedule Changes: With Fr. Soju’s departure we will have to alter our liturgical schedule. Effective October 1, Sacred Heart will be changing our daily and weekend Mass schedules. The daily Mass will take place at 9:30 AM. There will no longer be a 7 AM or a 9 AM Mass (Mon-Sat). On Satur-day the daily Mass will take place at 12:15 PM. Please note that this Mass does not fulfill the Sunday obliga-tion. Saturday evening Mass at 5 PM will remain. Sun-day Masses will be at 7 AM., 9 AM, 11 AM and 1 PM. There will no longer be a 5 PM Mass offered on Sunday evening. If anyone has purchased a Mass intention for this time we apologize for the inconvenience. The name of your loved one will be included at the 1 PM Mass on that particular date. If you have any questions please contact the Rectory at (718) 442-0058. Thank you for your understanding. Sacred Heart Rectory & Church Hours: Due to the changes in the Mass schedule the Rectory Sunday hours will be changed. Effective October 1 the Rectory will only be open from 10 AM - 3 PM on Sundays. Further-more, from Monday to Friday the Church will be open for parishioners to visit from 9 AM - 5 PM. Once again, thank you for your understanding in this matter. Altar Servers: The changes in our Mass schedule also effect our Altar Servers. Since we have less Masses we are going to increase the number of servers assigned to each Mass from three servers to four beginning Octo-ber 1. As always we thank each and every one of our servers for their dedication in serving not only Mass but the people of Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart Parish
Groups
Bible Study: Fr. Eric has a weekly Bible study group that meets on Saturdays from 1-2:30 PM in the school’s small cafeteria. During the hour The Rosary is recited, Father gives a short bible lecture and there is a brief group discussion. All are welcome to attend. Altar Servers: We are always looking for new boys and girls to become altar servers. If you are in the fifth grade or older, are a practicing Catholic and have received your first Holy Communion you can join. If anyone is interested please contact the Rectory at (718) 442-0058 or simply ask Fr. Eric after Mass. Being a server not only increases one’s spiritual experience at Mass but also is a great way to get involved in the parish. Sacred Heart Youth Group: Sacred Heart currently has a Youth Group for children in grades 6-12. If your child is interested in joining or if you have any questions contact Maria Montouri at (347) 247-2930. The group meets every first and third Monday of the month in the school cafeteria at 7 PM. Being a member of the youth group involves volunteering at bake sales, food drives and used clothing drives. The youth group also has “Movie Night”, retreat weekends and plays laser tag. This is a fun way to earn community service credits for school. Witness Formation Day: Witness Formation Day is a new initiative of the Respect Life Office for all on Staten Island. After the premiere of the movie Unplanned and the passing of the disturbing law permitting abortions right up until birth many peo-ple have expressed a desire to pray and witness the sanctity of human life outside of abortion facilities. The FIRST 40 days for Life Campaign on Staten Island has started this month and Witness For-mation will take place at St. Rita Church beginning with Mass at 9 AM and concluding at 2:30 PM. Witness Formation Day serves to answer the how’s and the why’s for praying outside abortion facilities.
Communion Breakfast: The annual Holy Name Communion Breakfast will take place on Sunday, Oc-tober 20th. The breakfast will be held at The Staaten immediately following the 9 AM Mass. The cost is $25 per person and children under 12 are $15. Last year was the first Breakfast at Sacred Heart in over twenty years and by all accounts it was a resounding success. Tickets will be sold shortly. The Communion Breakfast serves not only as a great kick off to the school year but also to bring us closer as a parish. This year’s guest speaker will be legendary basketball coach Bob Hurley, a member of The Naismith Hall of Fame. For more information contact Bill Raut-enstrauch at 917-756-2715. CCD Registration: CCD registration for the 2019-2020 school year has begun. The forms can be picked up at The Rectory from 9 AM-5 PM Monday through Friday. The cost is $165 per child and par-ents must provide a copy of the child’s baptism cer-tificate in the case of a new registration. Grades 1st-5th meet on Wednesday from 3:30-5 PM and grades 6th-8th meet from 5:30-7 PM.. Completed registra-tion forms can be dropped into the collection and either mailed or dropped off at the Rectory. Pastosa Gift Card Raffle: Vincent and Elizabeth
D’Antuono, Sacred Heart Parishioners, have es-
tablished a weekly raffle in the form of a Pastosa’s
gift card in order to give back to the community.
Congratulations to this week’s winners Terrance &
Andrea McElrath.
