Come to Christ

Today we hear very inviting words put on the lips of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel: “Come to me…I will give you rest.” It is the open and frequently spoken invitation to come to Christ, to be in his company, to relish his compassion and hope for the future. Today Jesus also uses the imagery of being yoked with him. We are not alone. He walks with us and shares the burden with us. Coming to Christ is balanced with going in Christ’s name to bring hope and healing and peace to other people. We need both directions – to come into Christ’s company and to go and make his love known and felt. In what ways do you hearken Jesus’ invitation to come to him? How is God inviting you to help bring others to Christ?

Fr.

Risen Savior Youth Ministry Is Looking for

Young Adult Volunteers

Risen Savior Youth Ministry and Faith Formation are part of a reorganization and restructuring of parish staff positions necessitated by the steadily decreasing income, especially during this coronavirus pandemic. In the new configuration, youth ministry and faith formation are more closely integrated for our high school youth. Staff is currently working on various forms of curricula, in-person, online/virtual, and a hybrid of both forms, as the COVID-19 situation remains uncertain. In order to provide the best possible programming and ministry experience for our youth, we are currently seeking volunteers, especially young adults, to assist with Youth Ministry. Please consider sharing your time with our Risen Savior youth. If you are interested and/or would like more information, please contact Rae Ann Konkol at [email protected] or call (952) 698-1727.

Heavenly Father, we give thanks for all those who trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior; we pray for the youth in our Risen Savior community, for all young people and individual group members who participate in this important ministry.

Lord, we ask for their continuous spiritual growth, so that they may become strong in their faith. We pray that, as they meet together, they may be immersed in the truth of scripture; that they may be edified and encouraged as they pray and worship with other young people and

members of the group. We pray that they may united in love and develop a desire to know the truth of the gospel, so that they may grow in grace and in knowledge of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Bless all youth group leaders and keep them looking to Jesus, the author of our faith, in whose name we pray. Amen.

July 5, 2020 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We are all familiar with the refrain, “You have put on Christ. In him you have been baptized. Alleluia, alleluia!” In Baptism, we “put on” Christ. In putting on Christ, we put on all that Christ is and represents: hope, faith, and love. We are no longer bound to the sins and failures of the flesh, that part of us that resists God and relies exclusively on human means. It also means that we are not in debt to our past, complete with its sins, failures, regrets, fears, and unfulfilled dreams. There is always hope. In putting on Christ, we put on God’s vision for the world, for all of his children and for us. We have been given a road map to guide our paths and a blueprint to follow for our life’s journey. There is no need for regret, and we are not tethered to our past. Is there anything in your past that you regret? Any decision or memory that continues to haunt you? We have all made mistakes, and we have this uncanny ability to continue beating ourselves up over things we can no longer do anything about, except learn from them. To put on Christ means that I can now bring God ’s unconditional love to my hurtful memories and sinful choices. With each new moment and every new choice, I can start clean and live in freedom. Imagine adults when the disciples were preaching and baptizing. They came to baptism not really knowing who they were, with pasts that were broken, seeking to live the joy of the Gospel they heard spoken to them and wanting the love they saw witnessed in the l ives of those who believed. What tremendous celebrations their baptisms must have been! They could now have the support of a community, full participation in the sacraments of the church, focus for their disordered lives, consolation, healing, and an understanding of what life is really all about. Our lives are meant to be celebrations of the Spirit we have received in Baptism. How does that joy get expressed in and through you? When we truly understand that we have put on Christ, our burdens can become much lighter. It is odd that so many Christians look like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if those weights could be lifted and joy experienced!

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11: 28

Adult Faith Formation & Social Justice and Charity

Becoming Catholic: Rite of Christian Initiation. Are you or is someone you know considering becoming Catholic or want to learn more about the Catholic faith? Do you have a friend or relative looking for a “faith home?” Are you an adult Catholic who has not yet been confirmed and/or has not yet received First Eucharist? Do you have a child who hasn’t been baptized or who was baptized in another faith tradition, but would like to live as a Catholic Christian? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (and adapted for children over 7 years old) is the way that the Catholic Church welcomes people into the Church. It is a process in which conversion of the heart brings a person to our Triune God the Father, Son, and Spirit through scripture, learning, discussion, prayer, and community. Visit our Risen Savior website Ministries—Faith Formation—RCIA or contact Grace Koleczek, to begin a process of inquiring as to whether you would like to begin a journey towards full initiation into the Catholic Church.

Celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. At Baptism we receive and celebrate God's free gift of grace and salvation through Jesus Christ. As the first Sacrament of Initiation, Baptism is also the sign of a lifelong relationship with God and with the Church. Due to pandemic safety and sanitation precautions, we are currently scheduling baptisms for Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. with only one family present at a time. When able, we will resume the once per month schedule we had previously. Parents must complete a preparation class prior to their child’s baptism date. This class is currently being offered virtually. For more information and to schedule a baptism, please visit our website “Sacraments” page or contact Grace Koleczek. NOTE: If you are interested in celebrating the sacrament in Spanish, please contact Gerardo Marin at (952) 698-1726 or email [email protected].

Catholic Watchmen: Meeting Virtually Starting in July!

The Risen Savior Catholic Watchmen is a group of men who gather monthly for prayer, fellowship, formation, and reflection. Starting in July, the Watchmen will be using Bishop Robert Barron’s series The Sacraments, and will be covering one sacrament each month. All men are invited to join! We are currently meeting virtually through Zoom on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be on July 28 to kick off the series and learn and discuss more about the sacrament of Baptism. For more information and to RSVP, go to the Risen Savior website: Ministries—Faith Formation—Catholic Watchmen or contact Grace Koleczek.

Virtual Film Discussion: Just Mercy

TUESDAY, JULY 7 FROM 7:00-9:00 P.M. OR THURSDAY, JULY 9 FROM 10:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M.

Participants will view the film Just Mercy on their own prior to the online gathering (during the month of June, the film is available to rent for free across streaming platforms). At the gathering, we will have time for prayer, reflection, and discussion. RSVP at risensavior.org or to Grace Koleczek. Once you RSVP you will be sent the Zoom invitation to join the discussion. Just Mercy is based on the powerful and thought-provoking true story of young lawyer, Bryan Stevenson, and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate, Eva Ansley. One of his first and most incendiary cases is that of Walter McMillian, who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the main testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings, as well as overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.

Volunteer Opportunity at The Open Door Pantry’s Mobile Lunchbox. Last summer, Risen Savior volunteers stepped up every Monday to serve healthy lunches to local children through the Open Door’s Mobile Lunch Box program. This summer, with health and safety precautions in place due to COVID-19, the Open Door modified their method but is still working to make sure children in our communities have a stable food source. The Open Door has set a goal of providing 30,000 lunches and 800 snack packs to children this summer! There are various ways to serve: as a driver/deliverer, by packing snacks and dropping them off to the donation site, or by donating financially to the Mobile Lunchbox campaign. For more information on all of these opportunities, go to https://risensavior.org/volunteer-opps/open-door-pantry-mobile-lunchbox-summer-2020/. If you are unable to volunteer or donate, please consider praying for the success of this program and for an end to hunger. A Mealtime Prayer for the Hungry (from Catholic Relief Services): Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts: the gift of food, for us and for others; of generosity, that when we have plenty, none should go hungry the whole world over; the gift of hearts that grow in humility and compassion for each of your children who suffer misfortune; the gift of your love that extends our reach, and would not deny your gifts to another. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Contact: Grace Koleczek, [email protected], (952) 698-1724

Thank You to Risen Savior! 360 Communities extends their sincere gratitude to Risen Savior and to the Knights of Columbus.

Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest, 2nd ed. Washington, D.C.: United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, 2012 y otros ritos de la Iglesia Católica.
